Lancaster SPCA of South Carolina Lancaster SPCA of Lancaster, South Carolina was formed in July 2013 to help save Lancaster County homeless animals.

Lancaster SPCA is a South Carolina 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue organization - EIN 46-3374265. Because LSPCA has no building to shelter animals, pets available for adoption are fostered by volunteers in their homes. If desiring to meet or adopt any available pets listed here or our official website (www.lancasterspca.net), please contact LSPCA via email at [email protected].

These two puppies tested positive for parvo yesterday and have not eaten in over 24 hours. They are now CRITICAL for treatment.

We are transferring them to our vet today. We still have four puppies at the vet fighting for their life. Now an additional two. Costs are going to be very high. We need to raise approximately $1600 per puppy. This includes the cost of giving them the antibody.

Our rescues partners who have also jumped in, in the last week are struggling to cover the parvo babies vet bills. It's the worst feeling of wanting to save lives and knowing costs are hard to raise. So we are choosing to stand united and support each other the best we can through this parvo nightmare. But we all need your support. Even if it is $5 it makes a difference.

Together we have saved 18 lives in the last week. Most of those babies are still at the vet fighting for their life. Overall bills have exceeded $25k and counting.

We will keep running to help, as long as the funding is coming in to allow us the means to say yes.

Rest easy sweet baby 💔

This baby fought so hard. I’d go in and speak words of encouragement and that little tail wouldn’t stop wagging. Parvo is a real demon. It can take a turn for the worst in the blink of an eye. In your honor, little one, we will keep fighting this beast. That’s a promise 🫶🏻.

Our favorite girl is looking for her furever Valentine! 545 days and still searching 💔

Kasey’s story is one of lots and lots of heartache.

Seized in August of ‘23 along with several others, she was the only one who survived intake. Kasey was so emaciated and regular meals were initially making her sick. Kasey skated by week after week narrowly avoiding euthanasia. As she was heartworm positive and possessive of her food. Who could blame her? She was starving.

Finally we thought Kasey was safe when she secured rescue with a northern partner but unfortunately things weren’t as they seemed. Her rescue was warehousing animals and she was seized from their property with so many others. She then sat in another shelter until her time there ran out too.

Kasey is now back in SC awaiting a real chance. While Kasey is safe, loved, and provided for to the best of her shelter foster’s ability, her situation is still not ideal. Kasey is desperate for a home or a foster with a rescue who can give her the chance to be the dog she is so desperate to be. Kasey is a sweet gentle girl who loves toys, blankies, evening walks, and rides in the car. Her foster says she does well on leash and has even enjoyed outings to the local tap house. Kasey has done okay with dog meets at the shelter. She is picky with her friends and seems to prefer more laid back dogs who will respect her space. Kasey will provide appropriate corrections when she feels necessary. In order to set Kasey up for success she will need time to decompress and get used to her surroundings, then be allowed multiple meets and slow proper introductions to another resident dog. Our girl has been through A LOT. With the right companion and some time and patience she will thrive.

🚫Cats

Spayed, chipped, heartworm neg, utd on vaccines.

Kasey is available for adoption through the Lancaster County Animal Shelter

How do you choose? How? How do you look at 20 puppies in need and determine who to help? Knowing the ones left behind will die without help?

This parvo situation has no simple solution. Every dog we admit costs approximately $1,000. But space at the vet is limited. We simply can not commit to 20 puppies. Because where do they go? Vet space is limited, funding is limited, and foster space is limited.

So here is where we are at.. 3pups have been admitted and have a rescue upon release. 20 remain at shelter without rescue backing. To the best of our ability, we will be supporting our rescue partners and evaluating what medical assistance we can provide to those at the shelter tomorrow. We are exploring the option of the monoclonal antibody therapy to the ones still at shelter. But this comes at a high cost. So again, how do you determine who gets it?

The medical costs behind this alone will cost on the low end of $25,000+ for 23 puppies.

Please continue to share our posts. Help us find rescue for these puppies at the shelter and donate if you can so we can provide the best we can.. we don't have all the answers, but we owe it to them to try. They didn't ask for this. 💔

CRITICAL PARVO OUTBREAK ‼️

There are 23 parvo puppies at a neighboring shelter. Yes 23 pups!!

LSPCA is in the process of intaking three of the symptomatic puppies right now. We do not have the foster or financial capability to intake 23 dogs, but we are helping as much as we can.

Here is how you can help:

- make a donation towards the 3 puppies care that are being transferred to our vet. ($3,000 cost)

- share this post with rescues and help us find rescue assistance to help with more of the pups at the shelter.

Have you considered volunteering at the Lancaster County Animal Shelter SC but feel a little intimidated by the rambunctious dogs? LSPCA is bringing in a certified dog behaviorist to the shelter a few times per month. The behaviorist can help read a dog's body language, identify issues such as reactivity to other dogs or resource guarding of food/toys, etc., and find ways to mitigate that. She has offered to hold a training for interested fosters and volunteers, and the first session will be from 3pm-5pm on Wednesday February 12 at the shelter. The first hour will be Jen talking and possibly demonstrating with one dog, and then the second hour is where participants can put the knowledge into practice hands-on with a dog. Participants will learn how to properly enter a kennel, leash the dog so he/she doesn't get away, and have a positive experience in the play yard. If you are interested in attending, please comment below. If you can’t make the afternoon hours due to work, let us know that as well. If there is enough interest, we would like to hold either an evening session and/or a Saturday session in maybe March or April. Pictured is Jen, working with adoptable Luna! 💕

Exciting news for 2025 ❤️🐾

We have implemented a cognitive behavioral therapy program for dogs at the Lancaster County Animal Shelter. A contracted Certified Family Dog Mediator and Fear Free Certified Trainer provides services using the most current and effective scientifically proven techniques to work with dogs. The program aims to reduce behavioral euthanasia, reduce the length of stay for shelter animals with behavioral issues, and address the shelter’s most significant needs (i.e., enrichment, adoptions, marketing, training, etc.).

The scope of the program includes:
-Shelter assessment to determine greatest needs.
-Creation of an action plan to address needs.
-Develop a training program (including a training manual) for canine behavior and enrichment (as needed).
-Hands-on work with dogs identified as having behavior challenges.
-Conduct staff and volunteer training for canine safety, behavior, and enrichment.
-Develop standard operating procedures for canine training and behavior.
-Develop training aids and assist in answering behavior/training questions.

This is a much-needed program that will help to prevent the euthanasia of dogs identified as having behavior issues and create a safer environment at the shelter for staff and volunteers.

We need your help to fund this much-needed program. Any donations, big or small, will help as we move toward our goal of preventing needless euthanasia of dogs that can be rehabilitated and adopted into loving families. Recurring monthly donations are needed even more as we hope to make this an ongoing program. ❤️🐾🐶

To support this program please consider a monthly or one time donation here -

About Lancaster SPCA (LSPCA) Rescue Organization of South Carolina

Overview

Founded in 2013, Lancaster South Carolina Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LSPCA) is a nonprofit rescue organization funded entirely through donations from individuals and corporate sponsors. In addition to rescuing the most critical-need animals in our community, LSPCA is committed to providing educational programs in Lancaster schools promoting ethical treatment of animals. LSPCA provides low-cost spay/neuter resources to control the overpopulation of unwanted and discarded pets that fill our shelters. LSPCA is an all-volunteer organization and has no paid staff or shelter facilities. All animals are housed with volunteer fosters.

Our Mission

  • To build a community where people value animals and treat them with respect and kindness.
