Last week, a veterinary social media influencer shared a video of a dog "gulping" chunks of a raw diet, including what looked like chicken wings, small drumsticks, and other typical raw meal components. She criticized the video for showing a dog not "chewing" his food, implying that chewing kibble was better for the dog.

Newsflash 1: (except for anyone who had cleaned up vomitus from a kibble-fed dog) Dogs do not chew kibble!

Newsflash 2: Dogs are not biologically designed to chew their food! Compare the dentition of a dog, with its sharp, pointed teeth, to that of a cow, with flat molars that grind when the cow first ingests grass, hay, silage, etc. And then re-grinds it when the how regurgitates it to chew its cud.

Newsflash 3: Dogs produce copious amounts of saliva, to lubricate the passage of chunks of food (meat) for swallowing. Animals designed to chew produce less, but mix it into their food by chewing and grinding the food to a small particle size.

Newsflash 4: None of this info is pointed out, in even the most casual way, in most veterinary programs. So please do NOT troll anyone who does not know this! It's not their fault, but rather that of the educational system that fails to promote feeding an animal in accordance with their biology. Zoo veterinarians get it, feeding the varied species they care for appropriately. Even pet stores get it, stocking everything from mice to crickets to other biologically appropriate foods for exotic pets they sell. Yet we still nutritionally abuse our dogs and cats with kibble/dry foods. And they pay the price in more illnesses, poor dental health, and chronic health conditions. We pay the price in higher vet bills.

It needs to stop. When you know better, you can do better.

Milkshake went on an adventure this past weekend, and had an amazingly good time! She was a fantastic traveler in the car, which made our trip pleasurable for me. Milkshake got to see her mom, Peaches. She also met her cousin, Goose - who is now officially her new BFF. We attended the Bark in the Park adoption event in downtown Dahlonega, GA, where she met many new 4 and 2 legged friends, as well as got many yummy treats!
So proud!

*Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

New peer-reviewed study published in Nature:

How a dog’s lifetime exposure to his own hormones (before being neutered) affects how well he handles aging and frailty later in life.

Study Background

• Frailty = when older dogs (and people) become weaker, less resilient, and more prone to illness and death.
• Most research looks at how to prevent frailty — this study looked at what makes some dogs bounce back better after frailty sets in.
• The focus was on the HPG axis — the hormonal system that produces testosterone and controls reproduction.

Key Findings

• Dogs neutered very young (before 2 years old) had:

o A much higher risk of death once they became frail.
o About 16% higher mortality for every small increase in frailty.

• Dogs kept intact longer (more than ~10 years) showed:
o No increase in mortality linked to frailty.
o Their hormones seemed to “buffer” the negative effects of aging.

• Each extra year of natural hormone exposure reduced frailty-related death risk by ~1%.

What It Means

• Hormones from the testes may protect against the worst effects of aging later in life.
• Removing them too early could make dogs less resilient to age-related decline.
• Frailty isn’t just about getting old — it’s also shaped by early-life events like the timing of neutering.
• This supports a “life course” view: what happens early in life affects health decades later.

Why It Matters

• The study suggests timing of neutering might influence how well dogs age.

Our Story

ABOUT US Spun Gold Golden Retrievers is a small hobby breeder located in the scenic Chattanooga, TN area. We started breeding Golden Retrievers because, simply put, we love this breed! The stellar “golden” temperament that is the hallmark of this breed is what really hooked us. In that vein, our Golden Retrievers are bred for temperament, health, intelligence and conformation – in that order. Not only that, our breeding program focuses on producing quality Golden Retrievers that can be used for everything that Goldens were originally bred to do, whether that be hunting, showing, therapy work or simply (and most importantly) acting as a cherished family companion. When searching for a dog of our own, we quickly realized that finding a quality-bred Golden can be very expensive. At the time, we had no interest in showing – we just wanted a healthy, loving, intelligent dog with a great temperament to join our family. We had children and other animals, so the natural choice for us was a Golden. All the reputable breeders I found, however, were asking prices that were cost-prohibitive for our one-income household. So, we saved up … and ended up purchasing two Goldens! Our main objective is to breed quality Goldens to the AKC breed standard - focusing on temperament and health first and foremost - at an affordable cost. We breed sparingly, however, and only have one, maybe two, litters per year. Also, we absolutely do not ship. If you are interested in purchasing a Spun Gold puppy, please contact us. We’d love to hear from you! RATES/SERVICES We only have 2-3 litters each year. These dogs are our family pets and the puppies are born and raised in our home, around our kids and other animals. They are well socialized for a family environment, being exposed to the many sights, sounds and activities of a busy household. There is always someone at home with the animals, and we start working with the puppies on potty training and obedience at a young age. We let the mother wean the puppies herself, as we’ve found that this makes for a more confident, secure personality. Also, we perform early neurological stimulations on days 3 through 16. ENS has been proven to have many benefits over the lifetime of the dog, including improved cardiovascular performance (heart rate), stronger heart beats, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress, and greater resistance to disease. In terms of learning, the pups are more active and exploratory and are better in competitive situations, as well as display increased problem solving skills. We want our puppies to have the very best start in life that we can give them, and so we start them on the very best quality food and make sure that they receive proper veterinary care before they leave us for their forever home. We have a vested interest in the wellbeing of these puppies, and will always be here to answer any questions or to help with any problems. Do not hesitate to contact us – we’re more than happy to help! We offer a standard 1 year health guarantee on all puppies, with the option of extending to a full 5 years as long as you continue the superior nutrition program that we have started prior to birth. We will send them home with an extensive puppy packet that includes photos of the puppy & its parents, tips from the breeders, a bag of premium quality large breed puppy food, information on basic puppy training, information specifically about the Golden Retriever, information about obedience training, copies of the vet records, a copy of the health guarantee, a copy of the sales contract, and copies of the parents’ registration papers, as well as a form for you to register your puppy. We recommend visitations with your new puppy starting at 4-5 weeks of age with everyone in the family. You can finally bring your new puppy home at 7-9 weeks of age. We do not ship, you must pick up your puppy. Please visit our web site for updated pricing and deposit information. When you purchase a Spun Gold puppy, this is what you will receive: *A well-socialized, hand-raised puppy. *3-day health guarantee for any immediate problems with the puppy. *1-5-year guarantee on genetic defects.* *A guarantee on the purebred status of the dog. *Breeder’s lifetime commitment to the dog. *Registration papers. *Help and advice over the phone/online for any problems after the sale. *A valuable puppy take-home kit.
