We love hearing stories like this from our clients! Trust and partnership is what it’s all about ❤️

“I brought my horse, Duke, a Tennessee Walking Horse, to Jodi Powell for training. Prior to Jodi, my horse was pacey, rushy and at times difficult to stop... and sometimes not fun to ride. He has been home for 6 months now and he is a joy to ride! He is very responsive, stops easily and gaits nicely. Jodi patiently taught me how to use my seat, legs and hands. Now, when I ask Duke for something he understands and answers me correctly. I feel like we are true partners. I would definitely recommend Jodi Powell!”

What can you and your horse expect out of a clinic with us?

The main goal is: You and your horse deserve to have a relationship where you both are thriving!

During a clinic, I address both the horse and rider individually, as well as blending you into the thriving team you want to be.

Together, we will create a more relaxed, balanced, supple, responsive, and ultimately, safer horse. Whether you want to trail ride, ride dressage, work cattle, or obstacle courses, this training is universal to supporting your horse to become the best they can be.

Make sure your horse is feeling their best this summer in the increased heat and sunshine.

Hot weather can take a toll on horses, if they are not managed properly.

Most people focus on proper coolouts after working them, but we have to keep an eye on horses out in the field (or even in their stalls), too.

Excessive heat can have negative effects on horses, such as:
🔥Dehydration
🔥Exhaustion
🔥Tendon issues
🔥Nervous system issues
🔥Skin irritation
🔥Digestive problems
…and so much more.

Make sure your horse is feeling their best by having an equine osteopath give them a full-body assessment.

I believe confidence comes with competence, both for the horse and the rider.

My goal is for you to not only know how you are going to communicate to your horse, but why and how your horse perceives what you are asking. I want a rider to be able to explain and communicate to their horse how to do something, whether that is an obstacle, dressage move, working a cow, etc.

There is a difference between you and your horse knowing tricks and understanding concepts on clear communication through relaxation, balance, and knowledge. Therefore, when a challenge arises, you are able to explain and talk your horse through it.

So, what is a clinic with the Thriving Equine like?

🐴 Straight from the horse’s mouth:
"Jodi brings her unique clarity and ability to her work in a way that makes the possibility of true connection and partnership with your horse a solid and safe reality. Her approach is not as much a 'how-to' as a 'why-to' and over the few days of the clinic my horse and I forged a much deeper bond that has since continued to grow. She reaches beneath the surface and teaches the subtle conversation that exists between energy and intention."

Riding is supposed to be fun, right?

Sometimes we lose sight of the reason why we ride in the first place.

The hustle and bustle of life, peer pressure, or confidence issues can take the joy out of riding and spending time with our horse.

Every ride isn’t going to be perfect, but you shouldn’t feel constantly frustrated, defeated, or scared.

At the Thriving Equine, it is our mission to help both horses and riders thrive. We accomplish this by improving the communication between horse and rider, which eventually leads to more confidence and more success.

Does your horse have a “mystery” lameness?

Sometimes traditional diagnostics are unable to detect issues going on within the horse. However, osteopathy takes a different approach that is commonly the final solution to many a “mystery” lameness.

Equine Osteopaths take a “whole horse” approach, where your horse will be examined from head to hoof. Once abnormalities are detected, the osteopath will then address them and begin the healing process for your horse with gentle manipulations and massage techniques.

Help your horse stay sure-footed on the trail.

Whether you are at the gym or learning how to surf, having good balance is key to better stability. Luckily, we have many tools that we can use to help us improve our balance as humans.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲’𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲?

Pictured here, one of my patients is spending time working on their hind end stability. The dynamic surface of the blue mats makes the horse use their focus and muscles to stay stable on the two mats.

This technique is just one of the ways I help horses and riders find better stability - whether it’s through an Equine Osteopathic session and/or a private lesson.

From my earliest memories, I have always had a love for horses. I wasn't influenced towards horses, they have always just been something I've had a deep, innocent, and joyful love towards. Horses, for me, are my safe place. They represent a space where I drop my insecurities and truly be who I am. The horses are the gift in all of this.

Do you have a favorite picture that captures your love for horses? Share it below!

Your horse is talking but… are you listening?

Horses communicate with us through their body language, energy level, and facial expressions.

🗣️ Does your horse get antsy at the mounting block?
🗣️ Do you have a hard time controlling your horse’s speed?
🗣️ When you go to use your leg, does your horse lurch forward?
🗣️ When you ask your horse to bend, do they resist your aids with stiffness and leaning?

Your horse is not trying to be “bad” when they don’t respond correctly to your aids… They just don’t understand what you are asking of them!

When I teach a clinic, my students love that I am able to meet the rider and the horse wherever they happen to be, and facilitate training and communication that makes sense to everyone.

I believe it is my mission to ensure you have the knowledge and confidence to be able to have success when you return home. In fact, I will not let you leave the facility without confirmation that you feel complete and ready to go!

As a horse trainer, I am the horse’s advocate.

When a horse is in my training program or participating in one of my clinics or lessons, it is my job to make them feel as safe and relaxed as possible.

Why?
Because horses learn quicker and better when they are in a relaxed state.

When training horses, my goal is to facilitate:
🔑 Relaxation through balance
🔑 Suppleness
🔑 Clear communication

Is your horse struggling with relaxation? Let’s address it together. Email me for more information at: [email protected]

Horses are intricate and intelligent creatures who desire to have a positive relationship with their humans.

When we are training horses, we will run into roadblocks. However, it is how we respond to these roadblocks that is crucial to the horse’s success.

Solving the puzzle of where the horse is lacking understanding and how to teach and explain that to the horse and rider is what I love to do. There is always a way to communicate with and teach a horse something without the use of force or punishment.

🗸 Are you having communication problems with your horse?
🗸 Are you looking to train your young horse, or teach your seasoned horse new skills?
🗸 Are you wanting to fine-tune the skills your horse already has?

I offer riding lessons in person or virtually. You can also join us for a clinic in a city near you!

Do you practice working with your horses with energy?

The goal of a lot of my clients is to be able to go on a nice relaxing trail ride without their horse getting worried or anxious.

To achieve this, they tend to always keep their horse nice and calm and work slowly and methodically.

Here is the reality though:
Something is going to worry your horse one day. There is a scenario that exists that is going to excite your horse. If you have never practiced at speed and with energy, you are probably not going to be successful working through that situation.

You have to practice working with energy – it is one of the best things you can do for your horse.

For my training horses I have to know I can guide them and talk to all four feet with speed in the arena before I will start taking them out on the trail. If my communication and aids go out the window when I bring my energy up, I am not setting me or my horse up for success when something excites them.

“I give Jodi 5 Stars. She has been training my horse, Artie, and he is doing wonderful. I really appreciate her knowledge of equine biomechanics and how weakness in an area on the horse translates to what the rider might be working on achieving under saddle. Plus, she has a unique ability to break down rider cues into understandable pieces - a must for me!”

16/05/2023

Horse training is more than training a horse to lead, ride, or load.

To me, horse training is incredibly rewarding.
Being able to have a front row seat to a horse learning to show their personality and gain confidence is so rewarding.

One of my favorite things to watch as a horse goes through training is to see their personality unfold and come out. I get a lot of horses that are not confident and live in a state of anxiety, or shut down, are frustrated and bitter toward riding, and don't have great herd dynamic skills.

As horses progress through training and it becomes clearer to them what is being asked of them, they learn to think and solve puzzles and then slowly build confidence. That confidence bleeds into everything they do including how they interact with horses in the pasture.

Horses that were once an insecure bully will now start being a calm, confident leader.
Horses that once were always at the bottom of the pecking order begin to not allow themselves to get pushed around as much.

I've had “shut down” horses that just stood in their paddock with a glazed look over their eyes start to become more free in their mind and learn how to play with other horses.

It is one the most rewarding parts of my job.

How is osteopathy different from other forms of bodywork?

An osteopath has the ability to test a horse and map what is dysfunctioning internally. They then treat these issues by adjusting them externally (via their muscle-skeletal system) to provide better functionality to the body from the inside out.

Osteopathy is a whole body approach by addressing these 3 systems:

1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: (Also known as the muscle-skeletal system) This is what people are most familiar with. First we locate parts of the horse that have come out of alignment and need to be adjusted. We then address these abnormalities with manual manipulations of the horse’s body.

2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: This is a method of evaluating the movement of the bones and membranes (like the dura mater) from the head, around the spinal cord, and to the sacrum.

3️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: This involves all of the organs and how they are innervated through the nervous system, how they are connected to each other and the rest of the body, and how they interact with each other to perform what needs to be done for daily life.

Then on top of that, all of these systems are interconnected by multiple layers of fascia to hold them together and connect the systems to each other.

Question: Do you use your seat to control your horse’s speed or do you use your hands?

🪑 Ideally on a more finished horse, 80% of your speed control should come from your seat.
✋ If you don't use your seat, then you HAVE to use your hands.

Using your hands discourages the hind end to stay engaged because the horse will want to lift their head to escape the contact of the reins. Adding contact with the reins will also send them into a sympathetic mind frame.

So, how do we keep the horse out of a sympathetic mind frame?
➡️ We teach them how to listen to our seat to rate their speed.

Being able to rate the speed of the walk, gait/trot, and canter with your seat is something that I teach all of my students and horses how to do.

I do this by training horses how to avoid contact with the reins by staying in tune with what my seat is asking them to do. I accomplish this by not taking slack out of the reins when they learn to respond to my seat.

Want to work on controlling your horse’s speed? Join us for a clinic! Check out our schedule here: https://www.thethrivingequinebyjodipowell.com/

Trail riding… Seems simple, right?

Yes! It should be.
However, if you have an unconfident or anxious horse, a trail ride will probably be far from simple.

The aids and movements that we work on in the arena really do translate to the trail! In order to be a successful and safe trail rider, one must know how to ask their horse how to perform some basic movements, all while being in control of their speed and direction.

Many of the participants I meet in my clinics are trail riders. When they leave a clinic with me, they feel more confident and relaxed on the trail, as well as their horse!

We accomplish happy trail riders and horses by covering some, if not all, of these maneuvers:
▪️ Turn on the forehand
▪️ Turn on the haunches and rollbacks
▪️ Leg Yield
▪️ Backing up (engaging the hind end)
▪️ Counterbending
▪️ Shoulder fore
▪️ Beginning stages of collection
▪️ Bending from poll to tail and engaging the inside hind leg (aka what I call “bending to relaxation”)

Digestive system issues can lead to lameness in horses.

What??
Yes. Abnormalities in the horse’s body can link to issues in their biomechanics.

A horse’s lameness may be linked to an issue deep inside their nervous or digestive system… Or a variety of other abnormalities.

Pinpointing these issues is a skill that Equine Osteopaths have studied and practiced for decades. Certified EDOs (Equine Diplomat Osteopaths) assess the entire horse, inside and out, each session which allows us to see the full picture of what is going on with each patient.

EDOs are an excellent addition to your horse’s professional care team and/or are great for diagnosing and treating mystery issues in horses that have not been found with traditional diagnostics.

Loving people through their horse journey is the most challenging, but most important aspect of my career.

My job isn't just a trainer, I am a facilitator, communicator, , mediator, support group, and mentor.

I have always had a deep bond with horses… They are my peace. However, I believe the people are the real reason I am doing what I do. I love the relationships I get to have with my riders all over the country.

I am grateful for each opportunity to honor and hold space for both the horse and rider. It is my goal to create a safe environment that allows the rider and horse to express themselves, while keeping everyone's wellness a priority.

Whether you are joining us for a clinic, taking a lesson, or sending in a video for review, you can always count on a safe and judgment-free space to learn and thrive with your horse.

📅 Secure your spot for Summer 2023!

How can an Equine Osteopath help MY horse?

Certified Equine Osteopaths, also known as an EDO® (Equine Diplomat Osteopath®), have the knowledge and tools to examine your horse from head to hoof.

Osteopaths specialize in treating issues, such as lameness, by observing a problem and pinpointing where it manifests itself in the horse’s body.

Osteopaths are a great addition to your horse’s team for routine care, and are also a good person to help diagnose issues that may be missed by others.

I am currently booking Osteopathic appointments for Summer 2023. For questions or to schedule an appointment, please email me at: [email protected]

Do you enjoy trail riding?
Or are you more of a stay-in-the-safety-of-the-arena person?

The comfort and security you find in an arena can and should be found out on the trail, also.

Are you afraid your horse will spook?
Are you unsure about water crossings and hills?

These are all valid concerns, however, they can easily be reduced by building the skills needed to build a safe partnership on the trail.

One of my specialties is working with horses and riders who want to enjoy the freedom of trail riding with confidence in themselves and their horses.

🔥 Are you ready to blaze some trails with ease?

An awesome quote I heard from a clinician was:

"In order for a horse to feel as though they can trust you, they have to believe that you are aware of them (meaning where they are mentally), you are aware of the environment, you are aware of yourself, and you are aware of how you are communicating and affecting each other."

Working with horses allows us to practice these skills every time we work with them.

❌ Horses do not respond well to their handlers being distracted, anxious, or distant.
✅ Horses want you to be present, calm, and confident.

So, how do we improve these skills?

Negative self talk doesn’t just hurt you- it affects everyone around you, and affects your horse too.

So often we think of self deprication as a harmless crime- something that only hurts us. But the energy you emit affects everything you touch- and your horse doesn’t logically reason that it’s you talking to you and not them. Think of it like being covered in a storm cloud- if doesn’t matter who it’s aimed at, nobody wants to stand under that.

Working on confidence to me doesn’t mean believing or pretending you’re the best, you’re not doing anything wrong etc- it means you stop focusing on yourself so much in general. It means you take in the moment and your place as part of it, but not the entirety of it.

Arrogance and self deprication are two sides of the same coin- excess focus on the self- and not enough in the moment. It adds nothing, and steals from everything around you.

Let go- blend in- be part of the environment. Breathe and take in the horse- then give to him from yourself.
