In Memory of Marylhen, the 1 in 10,000 chicken. 💖

Our Burwood barn recently said goodbye to a very special resident chicken, Marylhen Monroe, and we'd like to share a little about what made her so unique!

Marylhen Monroe experienced spontaneous s*x reversal, a very rare phenomenon that some estimate only occurs in 1 in every 10,000 hens.

All hens have only one functioning o***y, always located on the left side of their body. The right o***y is dormant. If the left is somehow damaged or fails to produce the necessary levels of estrogen, the right can begin to secrete androgens that cause the birds comb and wattles to grow and feathers to change to the male pattern.

This lead Marylhen Monroe to develop male physical characteristics, such as a large comb, large wattle, and spurs. She also never laid an egg.

Marylhen looked like a rooster, sometimes acted like a rooster, but was chromosomally a hen!

With a combined age of 68 years between them, these sweet seniors want nothing more than to spend their retirement in a warm, safe and cosy home.

Giving a rescued cat a second chance at love and life is the most rewarding experience; there's no doubt they recognise the opportunity you've given them, and return the love with copious amounts of purring, head-butts and biscuit making.

Foster home urgently needed!

Marshmallow has been waiting over a month to find a temporary loving foster family while he undergoes treatment for conjunctivitis.

He's a sweet petite kitty, a little shy to begin with, but we've discovered the way to his heart is through some nice belly rubs!

We provide all ongoing supplies throughout the foster period including vet care, litter, bedding, food, bowls and toys.

Keep pets and wildlife safe this Halloween!

If you're celebrating Halloween tomorrow, it's important to be mindful of any potential dangers our furry friends may face this spooky season:

🦴 Decorate diligently: decorations can pose a choking hazard so keep plastic spiders, fake web, tinsel and candles well out of reach.

👻 Trick or treat: chocolate can be severely toxic to pets, ensure the candy bowl is far from any paw’s reach. Be mindful of picking up all plastic wrappers and rubbish.

🎃 Dress up stress up: costumes can be restrictive and compromise your pet’s welfare. Pets wearing costumes should be supervised at all times and only wear their outfits for short periods. Remove the costume if your pet shows signs of distress, becomes entangled or experiences other problems.

🦇 Woeful web: fake spider webbing is considered a hazard to birds, bats and other wildlife. They're at risk of ingesting the synthetic fibres, getting caught, or lining nests with the web, putting young at risk. Avoid using, especially outside.

Suki and her two siblings were surrendered to Inspector Jeremy at only a few weeks old, when their owner could not provide the care they needed – our vets found that poor little Suki was suffering from a ruptured eye.

Without surgery, she would have been in severe, prolonged pain and risked developing life-threatening infection. We had no time to wait to perform her surgery – she’s currently recovering in our clinic and receiving the best possible care.

Her surgery and after-care costs will exceed $4500. Suki is just one of 100 shelter animals currently under vet care at RSPCA Victoria. Bouncer has found herself in the shelter at 15 years old.

She's the perfect golden oldie companion; a chatty, sweet and friendly purr machine. In fact, one of the first notes on her file from our vets reads "unable to hear heart due to purring" 😭💖
