Why Panado is Dangerous for Dogs...
If your dog is in pain or running a fever, you might think about giving them Panado (also known as paracetamol or acetaminophen) since it works well for humans. But here's why that's a bad idea:
Highly Toxic: Dogs are super sensitive to Panado. Even small amounts can be toxic because their bodies don't process it the way ours do. This can lead to a dangerous build-up in their system.
Liver Damage: One of the biggest risks is severe liver damage. Dogs' livers can't handle Panado well, and too much can cause liver failure. Signs include vomiting, tiredness, yellowing of the skin and eyes, and belly pain.
Red Blood Cell Damage: Panado can also mess up your dog's red blood cells, causing a condition called methemoglobinemia. This means their blood can't carry oxygen properly, leading to weakness, breathing problems, bluish gums, and dark urine.
Tummy Troubles: It can irritate your dog's stomach and intestines, causing vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. In extreme cases, it can even cause internal bleeding.
Overdose Risk: The line between a safe dose and a toxic one is super thin for dogs. Even a small mistake can be dangerous.
Not Vet-Approved: Panado isn't approved for use in dogs. There are other, much safer options for pain relief and fever that are made specifically for pets.
Bottom Line
Giving your dog Panado can be very dangerous and lead to serious health problems like liver damage and red blood cell issues. Always check with your vet before giving your dog any medication to make sure they're safe and sound.
