Friends of Maple Hill Farms Sanctuary at Maple Hill Farms is a non-profit dedicated to equine welfare and allied social services. Welcome to the page for Maple Hill Farms.

We love to share news, photos, educational information and stories about the horses, the people we touch, and our events. Horses...People...Possibilities! Maple Hill advocates quietly for its equine charges and we ask for respect in this matter. We prefer to be community based, rather than internet based. We run several working farms, and to that end must manage our time as efficiently as possible

. We are not always available internet-wise. We are always available to horses in need, and are hands-on with our rescues and farms. The horses on this page are only a small representation of the horses we help. We ask for courtesy when posting to this page. Some of these horses may have been surrendered by owners with no other choice or have come from places over which the horse had no control. This is not a page for political discussion or unending debate. There are plenty of other places for that. We welcome Friends to this page gratefully and graciously. We have a common agenda of kindness, courtesy, respect, helpfulness, and healing. Photos are generally the property of the poster, and in some cases, professional photographers, and may not be copied without express written permission. The Sanctuary at Maple Hill Farms, EIN 47-3302533,is a Maine non-profit corporation, tax exempt under IRC 501(c)(3). Maple Hill Farms Foundation, Inc, EIN 46-2763008, is a Maine non-profit corporation. We've had some very rainy days. Horses are looking forward to sliding into first and rolling in mud today. It's going to be yucky, but last night the rain stopped for a while and the landscape was awash in bright gold. There was even a rainbow.

UPDATE -noontime Wednesday: Thank you all for watching over us. Maggie started to improve and by night check she had pooped and peed. By morning she was pretty much back to normal and happy to go back out with her friends.

With all this clammy rain, Maggie could use a waterproof rain sheet or lightweight waterproof blanket, size 76-78, if anyone has an extra they would like to donate.

***Maggie was not feeling well tonight. Belly ache. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Being part of a community means helping each other out, being kind, and answering the call. We are grateful for a community which shares with us - whether it's their time, their surplus hay or a donation.
Over the past couple of months we have been able to answer the needs of several owners in distress, providing emergency aid and transport. We just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Moon is back home with his owner now, healing well. You will recall he suffered a horrible degloving accident and spent weeks at the vet clinic. Our donors helped replenish the fund which covered getting Moon in the door at the clinic.
A couple of weeks ago we got a call about a horse with a broken leg needing transport. We don't really hold out to transport and broken legs usually indicate a different outcome than a trip to the clinic. We happened to be within a few miles though and got some clarification of the situation. Cowboy, the horse, had injured himself resulting in a broken splint bone. The vet had been there and Cowboy needed surgery to remove the fragments. We hooked up the trailer and got Cowboy to the clinic and then brought him home a couple of days post-op. We are grateful to other clinic clients who lent their assistance when Cowboy decided he wanted to stay at the clinic. Patience and repeated consistent asking won out and he had an uneventful ride home.

We host a helpful group for owners for rehoming. Whether seeking or rehoming a companion animal or treasured performance horse it has been a great resource with owners helping owners. Look for https://www.facebook.com/groups/mainerescuerehoming

From time to time, we also hold drives to help humans in need. It's almost time for Friendsgiving and we do keep a weekly list of needs at The Drop In Center. https://www.facebook.com/groups/716529479663868
For food assistance, we support Maine Meal Assistance. https://www.facebook.com/groups/mainemealassistance

We are happy to be here - to learn new things, offer help when we can, offer a safe, happy and welcome place for volunteers and visitors, and generally be a part of a greater community focused on doing good for one another.

Please help us care for our resident horses!
Over the last week finished Rounds 2 and 3 of vaccinations, as well as health assessments and hoof care.
We are grateful to the Unwanted Horse Program and Merck for supplying the vaccines.
Costs for the pre-vax required physical exams and administration are our responsibility. We also had Coggins drawn for horses heading to new homes, and lab tests run to help assess problems for Flick, Laddie, and Augghie. Laddie has been added to our Cushings horses and will be needing regular Prascend. Mazda will soon have a date for gelding.
Anything you can do to help defray our costs would be very much appreciated. With rabies rampant in Maine, and an increase in other preventable diseases, vaccinations are an important part of overall health care. Horses on health care maintenance plans always need sponsors, too, as well as those who need singular issues resolved.
Thanks for your support!

For the last few months we have watched as a lingering drought made our pastures become crispy and dusty, reduced hay yields, and brought haying to a standstill. Please help us secure our winter hay NOW. Even a little bit helps. Monthly donations, even small ones, are particularly helpful.

Today the wind has kicked up and the drought index is SEVERE. The risk of fire is real. Please join us in doing everything possible to prevent fire. NO open flames! NOTHING to cause an errant spark- inside or outside. Properly CONTAIN and MONITOR combustible materials.

Yesterday we watched in horror as the 1800s barn which housed Matt Baillargeon's MPB Dressage burned to the ground. It could have been us. We are grateful every day for our equestrian community, and we were all quick to offer help. Do follow Matt's FB page for updates and needs.

Let us all stay safe and be kind and help one another.
