Friends of Maple Hill Farms Sanctuary at Maple Hill Farms is a non-profit dedicated to equine welfare and allied social services. Welcome to the page for Maple Hill Farms.

We love to share news, photos, educational information and stories about the horses, the people we touch, and our events. Horses...People...Possibilities! Maple Hill advocates quietly for its equine charges and we ask for respect in this matter. We prefer to be community based, rather than internet based. We run several working farms, and to that end must manage our time as efficiently as possible

. We are not always available internet-wise. We are always available to horses in need, and are hands-on with our rescues and farms. The horses on this page are only a small representation of the horses we help. We ask for courtesy when posting to this page. Some of these horses may have been surrendered by owners with no other choice or have come from places over which the horse had no control. This is not a page for political discussion or unending debate. There are plenty of other places for that. We welcome Friends to this page gratefully and graciously. We have a common agenda of kindness, courtesy, respect, helpfulness, and healing. Photos are generally the property of the poster, and in some cases, professional photographers, and may not be copied without express written permission. Excellent response by FD. Power company and DPW will be here soon, but this is going to take a while.

Filling the water tank in the Sunday Morning Pasture. Yes the grass is that high but won't be for long. We also need a continual supply of purchased hay to keep everyone well fed and healthy.
Three Big Brown Standardbreds are in the background - Augghie (age 29, retired), Darby (program horse), and Freddie (looking for a perm home soon).
Oh and it's $5 Friday! Take a Horse to Lunch today! Alternate donation links in the comments. Thanks, Lunch Ladies and Gentlemen!

Annie Needs YOUR help! No drama. The bad truck could have been coming, but it isn't. Still, Annie needs and deserves help.

We received a message from one of our Friends about a horse and family in need. An older couple, through illness and injury, had become unable to fully care for their horse. Winter was hard and despite hopeful good intentions, things did not go well.
We weren't sure we could do anything, except maybe network. We have continued to be pretty full, so we set about finding a safe landing elsewhere while we figured things out.
As we talked about Annie to one of our fosters, though, a little magic happened. A stall had become available, and a couple of volunteers took a special interest in providing manpower for the project.
So WELCOME, ANNIE! Annie is a 20ish chestnut Rocky Mountain mare. She is quite thin, but otherwise in pretty good shape. She traveled well and on intake she was calm and good natured. She is proving to be a very sweet, but hungry, horse and evidently loves small children.
We have begun her rehab and calculated refeed process. Annie was delighted to see the deep grass field, but her grazing time will be short and then gradually increased. Likewise, her feed schedule will include good hay and alfalfa with grain introduced slowly.
Annie will become available for adoption when we have cared for her immediate needs and evaluated her abilities.
IN THE MEANTIME, Annie could use some sponsors for sure!
Although we did not have to pay a broker or quarantine fees or transport, this little gal needs and deserves some good care, good food, good hay, good pasture, worming, vaccinations, and a pedicure.
Please take Annie to lunch this week or help to sponsor her with a recurring monthly donation. Let's watch Annie thrive!

TEETH! Here we are at $5 Dental Health Friday hoping you'll help with a few bills. Every little bit helps to keep the horses fed and healthy.
In addition to our $2000 hay bill, our recent dental bills were $565 and of special interest were Marilyn, Patch, Darby, and Freddie. Marilyn had two big sharp points removed and then had an additional follow-up visit. With Mazda 95% weaned, Marilyn is slowly regaining weight and her figure. She is a BIG girl so she is on extra meals. Marilyn is a good driving horse, reported to ride, and at 11 years old has a full life ahead of her.
Darby is showing some odd growth of his left canine and it will bear watching.
Freddie, a 24 year old Standardbred, was very skinny when he came in a couple of months ago and is looking ever so much better. He still needs some help though as he has occasional clicking when walking. He is an educated horse, with riding stable experience. We are hoping he will continue rehab and go on to be a very nice family horse.
Please help these worthy horses! Thank you!

TRAIL RIDING and HORSES HAVE the RIGHT of WAY.
We are finally seeing some good weather (ignoring the bugs as much as possible). Many of us love to be out on the trails - safely. We are so grateful for those who share the trails with respect and kindness. It's the law, but so much nicer when we all look out for each other out of courtesy as well.
Here's a good feels story from our Friend, Angie. Shared with permission:

"Another amazing ride today! Dandi did SO good! She really loves it out there!! We came across a 4-wheeler and a dirt bike that came up behind! Both very respectful! The 4-wheeler had stopped to move a downed branch and we waited to let him go out ahead of us as he said he was headed the same direction. The dirt bike came up behind us shortly after and I flagged him to stop and he did immediately, we turned back to get past him and again let him go ahead! He had turned his bike off and Dandi was a little nervous to pass it but did with a little coaxing! The young guy even talked to her telling her it was okay! He hand walked his bike ahead a bit before starting it so he wouldn’t scare her!

We continued on further than our last ride, even navigating a rocky area that we turned around at last time! It was so great! I questioned whether it was too windy but that really helped keep the bugs away and she settled as we got out there and wasn’t as spooky as things blew around!! We ran into the young kid on the 4-wheeler again, who I found out lives only a couple houses down from us, and he explained where the trails went and came out which was helpful! He just turned 16 and is new out on the trails by himself!

I appreciate running into such respectful people out there as that has been one of my worries!! I appreciate their patience as Dandi learned things were ok! She’ll be a pro out there soon enough with them!"

W**d whacking 101. We thought we would take a little walk and clear the path to the Sunday Morning pasture in between the never-ending rain showers. The horses are pretty delighted with the green green grass.

Uncle Laddie was having a nice peaceful nap when the little fella decided to come in for some shade.
It was warm today and Mazda's baby fur is still with him raising a sweat. We've been at this stage before. Clipping makes them look like motheaten messes. We may have to resort to that though.
Likewise Laddie is still in partial gorilla state. No chance of clippers with him. The last time an attempt was made a couple of years ago at camp he came home with only one side clipped. Laddie is a rugged Fell Pony cross created for harsh weather. At least his face has shed out and is sleek and shiny.

It's been a busy Monday.
Marilyn, TJ, Keebler and Patch got hoof trims with Zoe.
248 bales of hay were delivered with help from Dylan and April.
TJ (Awe Sausalito, Appy gelding) took a trip north to visit his friends, Kerry and Cecil. The two horses renewed their friendship with no snorts, bucks, or squeals. They rolled together, ate together, groomed each other, got on their fly masks and spray quietly and headed off to the nice newly green pasture. TJ is keeping Cecil company for a couple of weeks and then we expect a training slot will open for him.
Please continue to help us make all these good things happen - hoof and health care, plenty of feed, and BRIGHT FUTURES.
