Axolotl Care

Housing

Tanks: Axolotls can grow up to 12+ inches, so a rule of thumb when it comes to keeping axolotls is have 20 gallons for the first axolotl and 10 gallons for each additional axolotl that you have. Make sure your dechlorniator for your aquarium doesn't have aloe or state that it promotes slime coat, it could actually harm your axolotls slime coat.

*If you don’t have a ta

nk already cycled you can put your axolotl in a tub and do daily water changes.*

Substrate:

GRAVEL AND ROCKS are a big NO unless the rocks or gravel are twice the size of the axolotls head. Sand is a totally acceptable substrate as long as it’s fine sand, and your lotl is 4in or bigger. Filtration: Filtration is important to keep your cycle going and to also help keep your water clean (if you need help with cycling feel free to message us on Facebook). Axolotls don’t like a lot of water movement so its best to baffle your filter or use a sponge filter. Temperature: The ideal temperature range for axolotls is between 60-68 Fahrenheit. If the water gets to warm it could stress your axolotl and promote fungus. Feeding

Main foods: Good staples for axolotls are night crawlers, red wigglers, pellets (as long as protien is 40% or above), Repashy Grub Pie, and blackworms for smaller babies. Treats: Some foods you can feed on the rare occasion are bits of plain uncooked shrimp, bits of raw salmon, and frozen foods like blood worms or brine shrimp.

* Live bearer fish and live shrimp can be added to the tank for snacks after a 30-day quarantine. Goldfish and minnows are not acceptable feeders. Feeding Quantities: Feed your axolotl as much as it will eat. Baby axolotls should be fed twice daily, juvies should be fed once/twice a day, and adults should be fed daily/every other day. We personally feed Ragen soft sinking salmon pellets, Hikari Carnivore pellets, and Hikari Massivore pellets along with red wigglers that we personally breed. We do frozen as a treat about once a week for our juvies and babies during our water changes. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in contact with us! If you decide an axolotl isn’t the right pet for you, we will take it back/take one in no questions asked.
