It’s been a year since I brought Barrel home from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. He came to me to live out his final days and I truly didn’t expect him to last a year. The life span of a male tarantula is about about 5-6 years. He has now exceed that. Every day I get a ping of anxiety knowing today could be the day but lucky for me, he’s still here.
Barrel is a salmon pink birdeater, one of the largest species of tarantula in the world.
This is the first time I’ve witnessed, and got footage, of any of my T’s drinking water.

The coop, and area I lock them in at night, stayed dry through the storm. You would have to own outdoor animals to know this happiness. 😁😂

I’m not sure who needs to see this but if you’re going to start a garden -
NEVER EVER EVER use MiracleGro.

Big brand stores like Walmart, Lowe’s, homedepot all use miraclegro in their starter plants (which is why they die before producing)
Buy from a nursery.

Don’t give them cow’s milk.

Don’t give them puppy milk.

Don’t give them breast milk.

Place them in a kennel or ventilated box with a blanket or an old shirt.

Put a heating pad under half of the box.

Don’t try to give them water or food. They may aspirate (choke) and get pneumonia. They may get an upset tummy from improper food and get bloat or diarrhea- both of which can be fatal.

Wherever you are in the world, all month long, after dark (about 7pm), you’ll be able to see the planets - Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in one sweeping view.

Uranus and Neptune are there too, technically, but you'll need a telescope to see them.

Visible by the naked eye, binoculars, and telescopes. For the best view, stay away from light pollution and view obstructions (mountains, buildings)

**The Planet parade will peak on January 25th.

(The link to the telescope we are using is in the comments section. It was an xmas gift so I don't know too much about it but it's working great so far. Comes with 3 lenses and a phone attachment so I can take pictures of what I'm seeing through the scope.)

These are the moments I’m glad we trained. I’m glad I was repetitive. I’m glad he has passed this spot hundreds of times and knows to walk on the far side of the path away from the feral, yet friendly, cats who live and eat here. Today, I’m glad our training paid off… #BelgianMalinois
