🚨 Attention Zoo Vet Community! 🚨 Boehringer-Ingelheim is facing a backorder on Purevax Ferret Distemper until August 2024. Sadly, this leaves this season's black-footed ferret kits vulnerable.

We're reaching out on behalf of the National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center to see if anyone can spare doses to help bridge this gap. They will need approximately 300 doses for the first round, but any contribution, big or small, would be incredibly valuable and appreciated! 🙏 This season's kits won't be ready for release until late August, and we're hopeful that new vaccine stocks for their boosters will be available by then.

If you have a significant supply, we'll ensure doses are distributed to the 4 breeding zoos in the US to safeguard all black-footed ferrets. All doses provided will be replaced once new stock is received.

Science in action at every turn 🩺🦦🦦🦦

Behind-the-scenes at each of our conservation zoos, our Wildlife Health Services department is in the wings, ensuring that every single one of our animals from the very small to the very tall – receive the best possible care.

Just last week, their Veterinary team at Whipsnade Zoo came to visit our newest arrivals – three 8-week-old otter pups, to give them a thorough health check and implant each of them with a microchip, just like the one your pet cat or dog has.

These passionate individuals work closely with our Keepers, Scientists and Conservationists in what are incredibly varied roles. Next time you visit one of our conservation zoos, just stop for a moment and think about all of the incredible people looking after the iconic animals you’re enjoying on your visit.

Visitors to the DLC always ask our staff: how can you tell the lemurs apart? 🧐

Often, external cues help distinguish our residents, like radio collars and tail shaves. But some species exhibit a striking amount of individual difference, if you know what to look for! To celebrate World Lemur Day 2023, we’re offering a quick crash course in the easiest way to identify specific ring-tailed lemurs here at the DLC: their ears. On this graph, we've plotted a handful of our ring-tailed residents on two axes of Obviously Very Scientific Categories—the shape of the ears' tips (from Round to Elf) and the angle that the ears point (from Cat to Airplane) 📈
