Challenge: Try to make it through this video without getting emotional. đ„č
Tim Tebowâs Night to Shine event has a very special place in our hearts, year after year!!
We adore getting to celebrate each king and queen and see their faces absolutely light up as they see and love on all of the dogs.
Thank you for having us for the third year in a row!! We already canât wait for next year.
How have dogs impacted YOUR life?

Jumping is cute⊠Until it isnât!!
1. Itâs so easy to allow the jumping for one, maybe two minutes when you first get home. But Iâm sure after a couple minutes you find yourself scolding your dog because âthatâs enough!â Well, your dog doesnât understand. You were just encouraging the jumping a second ago? Itâs only fair to be consistent with your expectations. Your dog will quickly catch on!
2. Disagree with the jumping by using a leash. Dogs are opportunists. If the opportunity isnât even a possibility, it canât happen!
3. Teach your dog what you DO want. Your dog wants your attention. Teach them how to properly earn it!!
Bonus: Teach your puppy early!!! Whatâs cute now will not be cute later đ

Not only is this a super common issue, itâs also VERY dangerous! đŹ
You should be able to grab a package off your porch or calmly let guests in without having to quickly catch & pull your dog back.
If you commit 5-10min per day working on this exercise, youâll see a totally different (and safer!) dog in no time.
Donât forget to stay consistent!!!
What you donât use, youâll lose. That goes for your dog too đ

Common issue, simple solution!!
- Ditch the regular collar or harness
- Introduce a slip lead
- Reward slack in the leash
- Increase difficulty
- Keep it fun!!!

REWARD VS. BRIBERY đš
I am all for using rewards in training.
But, they must be used as a reward - not a bribe.
Far too often we bring out the reward WAY before the good behavior ever occurs. Your dog is learning âEh, Iâll listen but only if thereâs something it in for me.â
What happens when you donât have that âsomethingâ (reward) available?
Is your dog just going to ignore you, walk off and end up getting hurt?
It is so important to teach your dog to WANT to obey without having to manipulate them to even pay attention to you and so much of that comes down to timing.
Your reward should come AFTER (or during) the good behavior, not before.
How have you been rewarding your dog? đ¶âš

NEW YEAR, MORE TRAINING!! đ
Guess what? Your dog following you around ALL the time is creating an unhealthy dependency which can lead to separation anxiety / other issues. đš
Tethering allows your dog to think for themselves and learn how to practice a CALM mindset. Something you canât reinforce enough!
Tethering is something you canât start too soon or too late. Itâs just as helpful for puppies as it is grown dogs.
We recommend a bite-proof tether and anchor system. Your pup will most likely pitch a âpuppy tantrumâ the first few times, but let them be. Remember, your attention is a reinforcement.
Each time you practice, they will settle more and more quickly. This mindset will transfer to MANY other situations!
Does your dog know how to settle?? đ¶đđŒ

PRONG COLLARS - YES OR NO??
YES. Prong collars are an AMAZING tool when used properly.
That goes for any training tool, not just prongs.
Prong collars get a bad rep because they âlook scaryâ. Did you know theyâre designed to mimic the mother dogâs correction? đ€
HOW you fit the collar matters. HOW you USE the collar matters. If youâre applying constant pressure to your leash/prong collar you are using it incorrectly. Prong collars are designed to be used in a âpop & releaseâ method.
The brand/collar you use matters. The only kind of prong collar we recommend is @sprenger_dogsports
đĄBe sure to do your research and find a knowledgeable trainer before you make assumptions / form your opinion on the prong collar!
Do YOU use a prong collar with your dog?? đ¶

âš TETHERING âš
Tethering is something you canât start too soon or too late. Itâs just as helpful for puppies as it is grown dogs.
Rosie is a 3.5mo old pup who is used to being the center of attention. I mean, look at that face!
However, constantly following her humans around the house can be a setup for many issues.
Getting into things she shouldnât, pottying where she shouldnât, and especially - assuming the whole house is HERS. Which is a recipe for separation anxiety.
We started tethering day one and there were definitely some puppy âtantrumsâ.
However, we are on day 8 and she now settles almost immediately! Now I will give her a good chew to occupy some of her time. A reward and a time-passer all in one.
As a result of tethering she is becoming more comfortable with leash pressure, learning itâs OK for me to be out of sight, and most importantly she is learning how to SETTLE her growing, puppy mind. Progress is being made!!

đ¶ CHALLENGE/GIVEAWAY!!! đ¶
Can your dog pass all 5 steps??
If not - your dog may be reading your BODY LANGUAGE more than the actual âsitâ command.
Dogs communicate through body language!! Meaning, theyâre picking up on how/where you hold your hands, how your body leans towards them when you say a command, and of course - where youâre holding the treat!! đ€«
âšGIVEAWAYâš â
Iâd love to see how your dog did!!!
Every person that records their dog doing the âSITâ challenge (whether successful or not) and posts to their page, tagging @k9summit_training - theyâll be entered into a giveaway for THREE of our âmust haveâ training tools!!!
Winner will be announced Thursday, Sept. 1st.
GOOD LUCK!

TRAINING STARTS AT HOME!!!
There are SO many distractions to work through before EVER going out in public!!! Think about itâŠ
1) Tossing toys/treats on the ground = âLeave itâ which can be applied to SO many different things both in the home and outside/out in public.
2) Opening the door = Impulse control. Your dog is learning to resist breaking command to bolt out the door, rush up to people/dogs, chase after cars, etc.
3) Vacuuming = teaching your dog to remain calm / in command despite loud noises/your attention being on something else
4) Going out of sight = Teaching your dog that obedience is still expected despite the lack of your close presence.
Youâre already doing SO many of these things, why not work with your dog while you do them??
What are some other ways you can distraction-proof at HOME??

It takes so many little (and big!) steps to prepare your dog for the distractions of this world. If we only practiced in quiet, calm environments then it would only be fair to expect obedience in quiet, calm environments!!
We had been working on Chessyâs down-stay, âleave itâ command and calm mindset for almost two weeks before our adventure to the craziness of TJ Maxx. The âpre-training Chessyâ wouldâve been pulling towards every new person to jump all over them, covering them with face-kisses.
We met some new challenges and addressed those obstacles so that we could expect more in the future!
If your obedience isnât solid at home, donât expect it to be solid anywhere else. It never hurts to go back to the basics!!!

MINDSET MATTERS
We all know the struggle of trying to work with a dog whose attention is ANYWHERE but on us. Smells, squirrels, people, other dogs, the list goes on and on.
In this video we are incorporating the place bed as a way to reinforce a calm mindset, which in turn; lowers frustration, minimizes confusion and provides reliable results no matter what youâre working through!
With a calm mind comes clear communication.
(I have already taught Remi the implied stay on the place bed.) During this session I let her hang out on the bed with no additional command as long as all four paws remained on the bed. I wanted her to decide on her OWN how to relax and calm her mind. I wanted her to âsolve the problemâ independently.
She stayed standing for a while - waiting for me to give her another treat. After a while she realized this wasnât getting anywhere so she decided to sit. I immediately rewarded this voluntary sit and marked it with âyes!â
After several minutes she VOLUNTARILY went into a down position. She let out a big sigh of relief and her breathing immediately slowed. I verbally praised and marked with âyes!â - this is what I was wanting!!
After several repetitions we will begin pairing the word âsettleâ to this behavior.
There are MANY different scenarios you can use the âsettleâ cue!
What are some ways you incorporate/reinforce a calm mindset with your dog?
