Our sweet Java went to heaven on Thursday. I’m still shocked by it all and keep expecting to see her sitting by my feet or curled up next to Athena. She was the sweetest little pup who adored children and loved burrowing under blankets. Even at almost 14 years old, Java could still boss Athena around. I’m gonna miss that little dapple for the rest of my life 🐾 ♥️

Did you know that human and canine lymphoma are so similar that nearly identical chemotherapy treatment plans are used for both (thanks American Kennel Club for the info)? Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in both humans and dogs, but at this point, those treatment options are limited. CATCH wants to take to share information and raise awareness for future pups in need—share this post to participate!

It’s been a while since I’ve done introductions, so to anyone new here, hi! I’m Courtney, owner & operator of Freedom Tails Dog Training.

This is my Pitbull, Athena. She’s the reason I became a dog trainer. After she went through a terrible training experience with e-collars & other aversive methods, I discovered the power & effectiveness of positive reinforcement training. Inflicting pain to get what you want, especially without knowing the “why” behind the behavior, is never the answer. But love, patience, & rewards can get you almost any desirable behavior.

I graduated from Catch Training Academy, started my business in 2018 (just 2 months before my daughter was born), & received my CPDT-KA certification in 2021. I’m here to answer questions & spread knowledge. I also like to be open about my real-life wins & fails, because no one is perfect, but we are all certainly relatable!

Just a day in the life at the Sanossian house pretty much every time I try to train or make a video.

It’s not always perfect, we don’t always get it right the first time, but we certainly have fun!

Something I found on my phone today. I don’t know why I was recording, but these are two prime examples of calming signals dogs use when stressed, uncomfortable, or attempting to calm others down in their environment.

The yawn & the shake off.

You will most likely get your dog to yawn if you point your phone at them to take a picture, tell them to get off the furniture, or refuse to give them food you have (these are some of Athena’s common reasons). The yawn in each of these events is a message your dog is sending you that they’re uncomfortable or don’t like what just happened (don’t like objects in their face, don’t like being removed from something they enjoyed, or don’t like being ignored when you have something they want).

The shake off or shaking the body. Think of this calming signal as a way for your pups to try to relax after experiencing a somewhat stressful situation. Maybe a loud noise startled them & then they shook their bodies. Maybe they were trying to play with another dog that didn’t want to play back, so after being corrected, they shook off and walked away. Or maybe they shook their body because they were wet from the rain (jk that’s just because they wanted the water off their fur).

So next time you see your pup randomly yawn or shake their whole body, think about what happened prior to this event. It was probably a little uncomfortable for them.

“Touch” can be used so creatively to guide our pups or help them build confidence over new objects or environments

Here Storm is asked to “touch” prior to entering the tunnel as a reinforcement or booster, then asked again as a guide to help her come out of it! I love when my clients send me these videos. So fun to see these pups progress.

You can see Storm featured on my Enrichment Training highlight where she learns this cue for the first time!

⭐️ Here’s a teachable family moment! ⭐️
Babies are cute and commonly want to love on our pups. It’s so adorable. We have to snap a picture! 📸
But what do our pups think about this? Most of them hate it. They’re uncomfortable and their stress levels rise. Look at Athena’s body language. Ears pinned back. Avoiding eye contact. And the tongue flick! The tongue flick is a stress signal to let others around her know that she’s uncomfortable. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was followed by a dramatic yawn 🥱
What is stressing Athena out? Two things that I note: 1. Brooklyn leaning on her and getting into her personal space. 2. A camera (foreign scary object) pointing at Athena, also entering her personal, SAFE space
**Although B is under 2 in this photo, I’m still teaching her how to respect and appropriately engage with our dogs 🐶

Ever have those days where you just want to sprawl out and do nothing because you know it’s the weekend? 😂
I feel ya girl. If your pup isn’t motivated to learn then it’s okay to take breaks! Go do something they’ll enjoy, like playing a game, solving a puzzle toy, taking a walk, or basking in the sun ☀️
If your pup isn’t enjoying the training session, you will soon follow suit. Training should always be fun and never feel like a chore. If you get to that point, take a break 😉

This beautiful Malinois came to play while we were in Chesapeake over the weekend! Very toy motivated & more into the water than my two year old 😂
She was eager to obey when balls were used as her reward 🎾
Every dog is different when it comes to their motivators. Sometimes it’s treats, toys, games, or certain LIFE rewards! 😍
What drives your pup to listen?
