Good afternoon, Gentle Hands here. Due to an unexpected generator break down, grooming appointments will be at our Gilbert office (text for address.) Your regular appt times apply and you are welcome to wait in your car, or there are great restaurants near by. Appts will take as long as usual (~1hr/pet) and your pet will get the same great care and grooming as usual and prices will be reduced. We appreciate your understanding. Please let us know if you’d like come to us, or wait until around the week of the 15th.

A Swedish study of 200,000 predominantly intact dogs estimated that 24% of intact female dogs will experience a pyometra (a dangerous uterus infection) by 10 years of age.

A UK study from 2006-2011 found that the average age of the intact female dog at time of pyometra was 7.7 years, however, this varied greatly across breeds. Larger breeds like Dogue de Bordeaux had a mean age of 3.3 years at pyometra presentation. Smaller breeds like the Yorkie did not present pyometra until 9.4 years of age.

The risk of mammary cancer in female dogs increases with age. Removing the ovaries (an ovariectomy) is a negative factor in the development of mammary cancer. The scenario with the lowest risk of mammary cancer would be if we removed the ovaries before or shortly after the first estrous cycle, however, I do not support pediatric spay for other health reasons.

Removing the ovaries completely prevents pregnancy and pyometra while reducing the risk of mammary cancer.

Based on the benefits of leaving a female dog’s reproductive hormones intact through full maturity and the risks associated with leaving them intact their entire life, I have spayed my personal *small breed* female dogs between 2-5 years old.

If sterilization is needed, tubal ligation or an o***y sparing spay can be done at a younger age to allow the hormones to remain intact longer.

Jerome Horwitz, famous for playing CURLY in "THE THREE STOOGES", was known to all as a protector of dogs. Curly's contract with Columbia Pictures included a clause that allowed his dogs to accompany him on the studio lot. Columbia limited it to no more than two dogs at a time, this due to the puppies' unplanned on-camera appearances from time to time. You can still see those surprise dog on set invasions in the first few short films. Typically surrounded by various dogs, Curly was known to come home with a stray dog ​​and foster it until he could find it a permanent home. When the Stooges were out on the road, Curly took it upon himself to find a new home for at least one stray dog ​​in every town they visited. Curly is estimated to have saved and rescued more than 5,000 dogs in his lifetime. This makes him a man ahead of his time, with a very admirable concern for man's best friend. Dogs are family ❤

The puppies do not need to stay together and they are Shar Pei mixes, we think there is multiple dads. Let’s get these little guys out of the heat. Hercules is ready to come home with you! He is extremely friendly and very affectionate. He is about 5 years old and very healthy. He was saved from a life on the streets by a caring group of people that do TNR. This boy is a lover, not a fighter and was getting beat up by local ferals. The streets are no place for this sweet boy. Meet Herc at the South Chandler Petco on Arizona Avenue and Ocotillo.

At our new Gilbert location, we have openings every day of the week.

This is a one hour, one day per week commitment to care for the kitties in the store as they wait for their forever homes.

We cannot save kitties like these without your help.
