Helping the needy dogs and donkeys of Santorini, Greece
Santorini is a beautiful island--the light is magical, the food is wonderful, and the locals are warm and friendly. The island has only two flaws--one is the use of donkeys to carry tourists up and down the steep steps of the island pathways and the second is a large population of stray or abandoned dogs. When the donkeys can no longer work, they were often abandoned or killed by their owners. The stray dogs of the island depend on the generosity of tourists or some caring locals for a bit of food and fresh water. Some try and poison the dogs. Many on the island don’t spay or neuter their animals, so the cycle continues unchecked.
That’s where SAWA comes in. SAWA is the Santorini Animal Welfare Association. It is the only shelter on the island. Run by the indomitable Cristina Kaloudi and a team of volunteers, SAWA is home to over 100 dogs, 25 donkeys, 2 pigs, and four horses. The shelter is located on a windswept mountaintop, in a very remote location with an extremely difficult access road. The shelter literally needs everything--it has no electricity, no running water, no bathroom facility for volunteers. This fundraising campaign is to buy materials for shelters--two containers that can be situated on site, as well as a generator (if we’re able to afford it) and other supplies.
Every donation goes directly to SAWA. I’m partnering with Mike Peun and Angelika Kaiser to raise funds for this special effort. Mike and Angelika will drive an 18-wheeler from Germany to Santorini with all the supplies we fund. Mike and Angelika donate their time and effort, Mike’s company donates the truck for the trip, and the rest is up to us! Mike and Angelika did he same last year and were able to build a stable for the donkeys. Let’s see what we can accomplish together this year, with your help.
