***PSA from Dr. Monroe regarding the overpopulation crisis of feral/community cats along with the overpopulation of resulting kittens and the sick/starving/dying kittens that are overwhelming our local rescues and WHS***

Dear Community Members,

Since starting our work with TNR and feral cats in 2021 we have provided over 3500 feral cat spay/neuters along with socialization and placement of kittens (who started feral) through our kitten adoption program. Using these numbers and the average litter of (5) kittens/litter, (3) litters per year, AND including the males breeding (1) female (which we know they breed several) our tireless effort has PREVENTED 210,000 KITTENS in Whatcom County. Yet, even with all of this we are in a feral cat and community cat population CRISIS. The rescues are full and the shelter is full yet the demands are through the roof for kittens many of which sick, starving, and dying. Everyday I start my day reading way too many emails requesting help for feral cats and unaltered community cats that are breeding and having litter after litter. People pleading for help!!! It has reached a level that far exceeds compassion fatigue for me.

Folks let me ask you "why is it acceptable to have populations of feral cats?" If this were any other species help would be on the way!!! It is unacceptable and it has been an acceptable issue for far too long. So now I make it my mission and I will need community support.

I am taking my efforts to the local and county government level to advocate for feral cats. My Phase One plan? To improve the lives of feral cats, reduce the population of feral cats and intact stray community cats through TNR/spay/neuter, and enact ordinances or law that allow us to help these cats. All of this done WITHOUT penalizing colony caretakers. I just want to help the cats and by doing so I help the community, the local rescues, and the local shelter.

So.... please stay tuned as I WILL need your help. "Helping improve the lives of feral cats..." "Helping feral cats one colony at a time..."

Our Mission.... Our Vision...

Our mission... The RPV mission is to provide quality, compassionate, affordable veterinary care to pet rescues, humane societies, and other non-profit animal welfare organizations in the state of Washington.

Our vision... In 1999 Dr. Monroe was asked if she would “help out” at the Whatcom Humane Society (WHS) in Bellingham, WA. Having never given much thought to shelter and rescue medicine she felt this would be a great opportunity to further her education as a veterinarian and give back to the community. Little did she realize how much she would absolutely love her time at WHS. Dr. Monroe provided veterinary services to the WHSfor six years and helped in developing the WHS veterinary program that is still providing services today. Being a shelter veterinarian remains the most rewarding work of her career. Life changes dictated that Dr. Monroe would have to leave her position at WHS in 2006 but the passion of shelter medicine has always been with her. She has always made every effort to make herself available to support and help at WHS and other local animal rescues. In 2018 Dr. Monroe decided she wanted to start the journey of fulfilling her passion of providing quality, compassionate, and affordable care to non-profit animal welfare organizations. She felt she could do this with a full service mobile veterinary unit that would allow her to take her services where they are needed.

In the future Dr. Monroe would like to eventually retire from private practice and dedicate her time solely to her Rescue Pet Vet mission. Additionally, she would also eventually like to be able to provide services in other states and in disaster relief situations.
