Hi, my name is Ochre and I was so tiny when found with my siblings and no mama cat.

I am a very friendly 7 month old and you can see how pretty I am and thanks to our foster mum have grown up to be a lively, healthy kit, looking for a forever home.

I have been desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, and treated for worms and fleas.

Adopting a kitten is an amazing, rewarding experience. To watch a little curious cat develop its personality and learn about the world is truly a joy.

Please come and meet Ochre at Latrobe ARC.

***ADOPTED***

Little man Max has been with us for a few weeks now…brought in as a trapped stray with lots of cuts and scratches who had no vet work completed and we were unable to find his owner.

So now his vet work has all been done, Max is waiting for his forever home here at the Penna shelter…he is a sweet, cuddly boy who wants nothing but love and affection…but he is not coping here and has started to overgroom himself due to stress which has led to some bald patches which you can see in the photo.

We would dearly love for Max to be adopted but in the meantime we’d really love if someone could foster him so he gets some more one on one attention and give him a break from being in the cattery.

Max is probably best suited to a home with another friendly cat or he’d also be quite happy to be the king and be on his own.

Please inbox us if you might be able to help Max 🙏

Community Update on the Trapping of colony Cats
Please note that in the coming weeks we will stop trapping due to kitten season.

Here is another update from us to keep you up to date with how we are going with the colony cats at the Hill St Grocers in Longford and McDonald’s at Kingsmeadows…

We are pretty positive that we are on the tail end of both these locations and there are less cats in these areas - we can never clear the entire colony sadly but we always do our best.

So far 53 cats have been removed from the Mcdonalds colony and 33 from the Longford Hill St Grocer.

West Tamar Council have been trapping at the Tailrace recently and removed 16 cats from there who all arrived to our Facility.

Every Trapped cat who arrives at Just Cats are checked over - this is to make sure that
1. they are healthy and well
2. there are no injuries that need to be addressed
3. to check if they are microchipped or desexed

Just a reminder that -
WE ARE NOT FUNDED BY ANYONE TO DO THIS....

All of the above costs our Organisation between $350 - $550 per cat as long as they do not require extensive vet work such as dentals...

SO CAN YOU HELP US?

We need more foster carers to help us with the rehabilitation of these cats - if you can assist please fill out our form on our website at www.justcats.org.au and we will get back to you with more information.

OR

Can you help us financially to assist in covering some of these costs involved?

Community Notice

Just Cats have an arrangement with a local property owner and together we are finally cleaning up the colony of cats located at McDonalds in Kingsmeadows that we have been aware of for over 3 years.

There are over 20 adult cats that are part of this colony and many kittens
We have currently removed 29 from this location.

If you live in this area please make sure your cats are in your home on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday night after 8pm - better still keep them confined 24/7 to keep them safe regardless.

If you have any concerns please email us at [email protected]

This poor little guy came in this morning after the wonderful staff at the Mornington Tip found him in-between some mattresses that had been dumped.

He is anaemic, has cat flu, flea burdened, dehydrated and weighs only 472 gm when he should be 800-900gm for his age 😞

Little guy has a tough road ahead but we’ve already commenced treatment so hopefully we can provide a more positive update in a few days 🙏

🦘 🧵 ANIMAL POUCHES NEEDED!! 🧵 🦘

Our friends at Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital are still flooded and running off generators. They are unable to wash pouches to keep up with the animals spewing in from the recent flooding across SE QLD, so we have raided our stash and arranged an emergency run of pouches for to head up this morning.

Now though, we are running short of these vital supplies. We desperately need more pouches, sized small to extra large to keep supplying our wildlife rescues and carers that have lost everything. We are down to almost no marsupial pouches! If you have any to spare, or are keen to make some, send them our way!

DO NOT take or send your pouches to the zoo direct. They do not have the capacity to meet with you or take in these donations as they are flat strapped trying to save our wildlife.

Please ensure all pouches are breathable cotton, with either a cotton or fleece lining. No knitted or crocheted pouches required at this time.

Please send all pouches to our HQ or any drop off locations:

This morning Dr Hannah had a lovely stroll along the Taroona foreshore and came across a puffer fish, which is toxic to dogs!

Puffer fish contain a toxin called tetrodotoxin which is one of the most deadly natural poisons. The toxin is found on the skin and internal organs of the puffer fish, and is approximately 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. A lethal dose of tetrodotoxin is smaller than the head of a pin, with one fish containing enough poison to kill 30 people.

Tetrodotoxin is extremely fast acting. Within minutes, signs of poisoning start to become apparent, and after a few short hours paralysis will set in. In severe cases, puffer fish poisoning proves fatal within an hour.

Early signs and symptoms include:

🐡 Vomiting
🐡 Excessive drooling
🐡 Panting
🐡 Dullness and lethargy

Symptoms will then progress to:

🐡 Trembling
🐡 Wobbly walking pattern
🐡 Blue-tinged coloured gums
🐡 Dilated pupils
🐡 Muscle tremors and seizures

Quickly signs and symptoms will become more severe to include:

🐡 Difficulty breathing
🐡 Unable to blink
🐡 Complete paralysis of the whole body
🐡 Coma

How is puffer fish poisoning treated?
If you see your dog eat or mouth (licking or chewing) a puffer fish take them to the vet immediately. On your arrival your vet will perform tests, such as blood tests, to determine the severity of the poisoning. As there is no antidote for tetrodotoxin poisoning, treatment involves:

🐡 Inducing vomiting to remove the toxin
🐡 Administering of activated charcoal to assist in the removal of the toxin
🐡 Soluble fat fluids may be used to dilute the toxin
IV fluids for hydration
🐡 Oxygen therapy if they are experiencing breathing difficulties
🐡 In cases of severe paralysis, mechanical ventilation (life support) may be needed

If treatment is sought many pets will recover within a day or two. Without treatment, pets who become paralysed are not likely to recover.

Ash is a gorgeous blue merle and white girl, who was surrendered to us as a blue Heeler x but has a finer body more in line with a koolie or border collie (without the coat!) Safe to say this beautiful girl is a working breed mix, and a very active girl who would like to live on a property that has some room for her to run around. She is sweet and soft and loves a cuddle. She is happy being with people and equally happy being alone. She is predominantly an outside dog but whilst is foster care she has been learning family routines including being inside. It didn't take much for her to realise that beds and couches are comfy. Exercise wise, Ash likes a walk like most dogs and gets quite excited when the lead comes out. She tends to pull a little on the lead for the first bit and then calms down. At home she has a variety of toys but her absolute favourite is a squeaky ball. She plays with this for hours and invites you to throw it for her before playing her own games. Ash is like a giant puppy and whilst she is content to be outside by herself she can still get up to mischief and will benefit from further training. She appreciates boundaries and settles very quickly when they are enforced. The ideal home for Ash would be in an active family with a good backyard with no other pets. She follows the action around the household rather than preferring just a single person. Being a working doggo she does tend to herd her people and likes to stand on her hind legs and place her front paws on you. She is very light and gentle though so is mostly asking for pats and has no risk of knocking you over. Ash takes a while to settle with other dogs but has made friends with her foster sister and the dogs down the street. She has shown no interest in sheep but tends to look at larger livestock such as cattle and horses. She is afraid of loud metallic noises. Her previous owner stated she is not to be trusted with cats so therefore we would not recommend her with small animals. She has lived with children but is a bit bouncy so not recommended with small children. She is however a gentle girl so older children should be ok. As Ash is only young, she has plenty of energy and needs to have both mental and physical stimulation to prevent her from becoming neurotic. We feel she will be an amazing girl in the right home which can meet her needs.

We all have our own emotional/mental cup.

Some days there is just nothing to give- only just enough to keep your s**t together.

Other days our cup might be so full that we are brimming with lots to share mentally, socially and physically. We feel good, at our best and have purpose.

Dogs (and most other animals to much extent) are no different. Are you filling or emptying your dogs emotional cup?

Can we get a like from all ya’ll out there that can identify with this? We’d love to know how many of ours followers are rescuers!

Tonite we bring you a sad story 💔

https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=JAWM9CEMXCJF4

This poor boy we have taken under our wing was found wandering in the bush & had been shot in the hind leg.
Unfortunately by the time he was trapped & bought into the vets he was already septic & the leg had to be amputated. The vets didn’t know if he would pull thru but he’s a fighter & is now doing well. He still has a long recovery ahead but once we bring him into care & he gets some TLC we are sure he will be getting around on 3 legs & we will make sure he gets to live his best life, the life he deserves to have 🌈If anyone would be so kind to donate to this boys vet bill we would be grateful 🙏

Because of the overpopulation of domestic cats in Tasmania we advocate a lot for adoption from cat management facilities, but sometimes you just have your heart set on a purebred cat or perhaps you need one because of allergy issues.

We have a lot of amazing cat breeders in Tasmania that specialise in breeds ranging from the naked Sphynx to the uber-fluffy Norwegian Forest Cat. Or maybe you are interested in a talkative companion like a Siamese?

Breeders are very passionate about their cats and they will make sure that your new companion will be well socialised, vaccinated, microchipped and desexed. They want their cats to live long and healthy lives with families who will dote on them.

Visit Cat Association of Tasmania Inc., Cat Control Council of Tasmania, Tasmanian Feline Association or Australian National Cats Inc. to see what cat breeds are available in Tasmania.
