Oakland Animal Services needs help! Read on for more:

Can you help us find new homes for 50 dogs in 5 days? Because that’s what we need to open up room in our shelter and foster program to enable us to continue taking in the dogs that arrive in our care every single day!

Oakland Animal Services is Oakland’s only open admission shelter, helping over 6,500 homeless, lost and injured animals annually. Since 2020, OAS has undertaken a significant restructuring to save more shelter animals’ lives. By focusing on returning lost pets, increasing adoptions, expanding foster programs and supporting people in keeping their pets, OAS has decreased euthanasia for dogs by 67% and has not had to euthanize dogs for space since 2019.

Overcrowding has become an epidemic for shelters across the country, and in Oakland dog intake has been increasing over several months. In 2022, OAS took in 555 more dogs compared to the same period in 2021. There is now an urgent need to find 50 big dogs a home by Monday, January 16, 2022.

OAS is asking the community to save an animal’s life by adopting a dog. Those who want to help but cannot adopt are encouraged to foster a pet, which will help address the immediate crowding crisis.

“The changes we have made in the last three years, as well as the tremendous community support that we have received, has made it possible to achieve the lowest euthanasia rate for dogs in OAS’s history in 2022. We’re asking for people to step up in a big way to help our dogs now,” said Ann Dunn, Director of Oakland Animal Services.

We’ll be having extended adoption hours from Thursday through Monday, where you can stop by without an appointment and head home with your new dog!

Check out all our available dogs at https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/adopt/dogs/ and pick out your favorites to meet. And, if you’re not in a position to adopt, please help us to spread the word to your networks – we can’t do this without the support of all of our community!

Extended adoption hours:

Thursday 1/12 noon-7
Friday 1/13 noon-5
Saturday 1/14 noon-5
Sunday 1/15 noon-5
Monday 1/16 noon-5

*UPDATE: Reacued by the excellent Super Fur-iends!

Poor Jimmy, this handsome fellow pictured, is in a real jam. A good samaritan has been feeding Jimmy for a couple of months in the parking lot of the Sketcher’s outlet store in a busy strip mall in El Cerrito. It is not a safe place for a cat; right by busy streets. His feeder noticed Jimmy had a skin condition and brought him to Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez. Jimmy has scabies, which unfortunately is contagious to other animals and people. It’s easy to treat by topical Revolution. Jimmy isn’t feral but he’s very nervous in the shelter.

Jimmy’s feeder has tried to find someone to adopt him, but has had no luck, and can’t adopt himself. Going back to the parking lot is not an option. Jimmy’s just about out of time at the shelter. If he doesn’t have a firm commitment by 10/31 he will go on the euthanasia list.

It’s a long shot but is there anyone out there willing to take Jimmy as a garden or barn cat? I think he may end up being quite nice to people he gets to know. If he had a commitment, the shelter will give him another treatment and neuter him. I can loan a feral den, large dog crate, litter box, and food & water bowls so he can be confined on his new property for about 3 weeks. I’d even set him up with food for six months and give his adopter a nice outdoor cat house. Again, I think once Jimmy is feeling better and not in a cage, he’ll be a friendly fellow.

Jimmy’s estimated to be about 3 years old. Here is his shelter profile: https://petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=CCST.A0990987

Please don’t ask “Why is he going to be euthanized?” because I don’t know the answer. Maybe he’s tough to treat because he doesn’t like to be handled and the medical team is very overwhelmed.

Friends, this is Morticia. I hate that name so I’m gonna call her Tish. This beautiful gal came to the shelter with a litter of kittens. She took great care of her babies and they’ve all been adopted or transferred to rescue groups.

Now Trish needs our help. She was in a cage for so long, wasn’t feeling well for a while, and though she’s been in a larger enclosure lately, she’s just had a damn ’nuff of shelter life. She has gained a lot of confidence and now sits up on her shelf and enjoys treats & wet food with her visitors. She’s hand shy around people and may even give a small “please back away” hiss, but I truly believe that once she’s out of the stressful shelter, away from the barking dogs, and has a quiet place and family to call her own, she’ll settle right down.

Because the shelter is over capacity and there are so many needy cats in our community right now, Tish is living on borrowed time. She must have a firm commitment either from an adopter or rescue group by October 18 or this is the end of the line for her. Please no one bash the shelter. Animals cannot live there forever and cats like Tish who are still nervous with people don’t have a lot of interest from adopters or rescue groups.

I’m sharing Tish because maybe her story will resonate with someone. Maybe a person who knows what it’s like to feel fear and discomfort in a stressful place will consider meeting this beautiful, sensitive cat and give her a chance. Tish might thrive in a home where she can have outdoor access, enjoying freedom while she bonds with her new family.

Tish is estimated to be about 2 years old. She’s spayed, vaccinated and ready to start her new life. She’s anxiously awaiting adoption or rescue at Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez. Please consider sharing her story in the hopes that Tish will find her hero.

Friends, this handsome gray & white fellow is Felix. Felix is a Contra Costa Animal Services kitty. He’s such a cool cat, he’s had lots of people interested in adopting him. Unfortunately, he has pretty bad dental disease and it’s tough to get adopted when you need expensive surgery right away.

But Felix lucked out. Friends Of Contra Costa Animal Shelters sponsored his surgery which was done today by the good folks at Animal Care Hospital of Walnut Creek. Felix is recovering and will go back to the shelter in a couple of days to find a new family (he already has someone who may come in for him, paws crossed!)

FOCCAS is also going to sponsor dental surgery for sweet ginger kitty Tobias next weekend. As we all know, vet bills and especially dental surgeries, are expensive and FOCCAS needs our help to continue covering medical procedures for CCAS animals that are beyond the scope of the shelter.

If anyone is so inclined, FOCCAS would be very grateful for whatever donations come their way. You can donate online at https://www.thefoccas.org/donatetoday

I’ll post a Felix update when he goes back to the shelter and is ready to interview potential adopters (or hopefully the nice person who was interested in him will come back to seal the deal). Thanks!

Tinker is as sweet as they come. She came to the shelter because sadly her person could no longer care for their pets. Tinker’s cat and dog sisters have been adopted and now it’s Tinker’s turn. She is supposedly about 14 years old but man I’d love to know her secret because she acts and looks much younger. She’s super social and enjoys greeting visitors, getting pets and cheek rubs, and communicating via “silent meow” (she makes the meow mouth but no sound comes out, it’s adorable).

Since she’s lived with other animals, Tinker might do just fine joining another cat and/or dog in a new home. She is spayed, healthy, and superb company. Folks can meet her at the Martinez shelter Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm (til 7pm on Wednesdays).

There are some truly exceptional kitties waiting for adoption at the Contra Costa Animal Services shelter. While many folks are looking for kittens right now, we know there are people out there who’d like to adopt an adult feline companion for great reasons. For example, with an adult you can see what their personalities are and determine if they’re the right fit for you home. Plus, adults don’t bring chaotic kitten shenanigans (which, while that can be adorable, let’s face it, can a bit TOO MUCH😹). And these adults bring with them a world of life experience that makes them excellent & interesting companions.

Featured here are just a few of the kitties waiting patiently at the shelter for new families. Some may have a medical challenge or may need a bit of patience to feel 100% confident but we guarantee that all are worth it!

We simply must rave about delightfully unique May. She’s at the Contra Costa Animal Services shelter waiting for a new family. May came to the shelter in not so great shape. She had a touch of the “Big C” on her ear tips but the excellent shelter medical staff removed the affected tissue and performed a biopsy and so far (knock on wood) May appears to not need further medical intervention.

She is so beautiful - just a slip of a gal, petite, cheekbones to die for, and her special half-ears which set her apart from the crowd. May is a lovey girl. She plays it a bit coy at first but settle down her kennel, share some treats with her, and before you know it she’ll be rubbing her cheeks on your hands (and feet, and apron, and jeans). We think she’ll be quite the affectionate gal when she bonds with a new person or family.

May is still a youngster at about 3 years old. Check out her cute online diary:

Available now for her perfect match! Come meet Noodle at the Contra Costa Animal Services shelter in Martinez, CA. Here’s what the shelter has said about this gorgeous girl, “Noodle would appreciate patience & a gentle/slow greet when meeting new people. The shelter seems a bit overwhelming for her and she may need some time to adjust to new situations and be allowed to go at her own pace. She likes tennis balls and takes treats very nicely so far. Kids may be too much for her,as she may not approciate overhandling. She enjoyed laying in a comfy bed in a quiet office and just staring politely out the window after a quick walk and yard time.”

Hello, Smart Paws community. Will you please take a moment to read about Soda, a young pup at the Contra Costa Animal Services services shelter in Martinez, CA, who needs a holiday miracle?

In early November, a kind person found these sweet & friendly dogs running around loose in Richmond. She couldn’t keep them so she brought them to the shelter. Before that, however, they stayed at her place over night. During their stay, both dogs were friendly (greeting everyone with tail wags), quiet and well-mannered.

At the shelter, the dogs were not housed together since they were an unaltered male/female pair. No one came to claim them. The female, named Brandy (gray pup) took shelter life in stride. She was relaxed and easygoing and was eventually adopted.

The poor boy dog, named Soda (the black & white pup), was terrified of the shelter from day 1. He has totally shut down with fear and stress. Because of his psychological suffering, he is now moving toward euthanasia if he doesn’t have a rescue committed to him this weekend. At this point, because he is so shut down, he is not available for adoption, but only to rescue groups.

Will you please share Soda’s story in hopes that a rescue group will hear his plea and come forward for him? And if anyone wants to pledge towards his care (or offer to foster him) it would undoubtedly help as rescues always need resources and foster families.

Soda (shelter ID ) is neutered and estimated to be about 1 year old. Thank your for any shares and positive energy directed to Soda so he has a chance to find a family again.

This is Holly. She was a community cat who was struggling to thrive in her colony. Her caretaker brought her to the Contra Costa Animal Services shelter, hoping Ms Holly could find a loving, indoor (or indoor-outdoor) home. At first, Holly was so scared, she wouldn’t even eat in front of folks. But oh my goodness, what a difference a few days makes. When I saw her on Saturday, she gave a big “YES PLEASE!” when I offered some Churu. Then I negotiated with her for a bit and got her to agree that since I brought the super tasty treats, she could let me give her a neck scratch. Well, turns out her timid demeanor was kind of a cover as she really enjoyed the attention.

I’m in love with her grumpy/not really grumpy face. She’s an adorable little phony curmudgeon and I’m obsessed with her.

Holly is estimated to be about 5 yrs old. She’s spayed and ready to meet her new people - preferably folks who can be patient and give her some time to settle into her new home.

UPDATE - CRAWFORD AND BELT WERE ADOPTED TOGETHER AND LEFT THE SHELTER ON 9/25/21. We love when kittens go home in pairs and wish the kittens and their new guardian the best!!

Things are usually better when you have a friend, especially when a pair of timid kittens is in the shelter. Crawford (orange ) and Belt (black ) are brothers who were brought to Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez, CA after being found with an upper respiratory infection. Both are starting to realize that people aren't as scary as they initially thought - and they would really like to be adopted together. Can you help them make this happen by telling some of your friends or by coming by to meet them?

It’s Saturday! An excellent day to visit the nearest shelter and adopt a dog! Visit in person so you can meet more than one, talk to a volunteer to see if they can help you make an excellent match. Be sure the dog you’re looking at is a good match for your household, environment, family, activity level and enrichment needs. Are you a couch potato? A shelter probably has one of those! Are you a runner and adventurer? Ask about one that can keep up with your busy lifestyle. Be ready for a couple of MONTHS of adjustment time. It takes time. Be thoughtful and discerning. An adoption is a hope at a forever home. This is just one pup available at Contra Costa Animal Services in Martinez CA. Visit and ask the volunteers to tell you more about any dog you’re interested in.

Mega has been through a lot and it would be great if we could help her find her forever home. Mega is a very sweet quiet cat who came to the shelter after she was found caught in a fence. She suffered significant trauma to her left rear leg necessitating amputation. She’s still getting used to her new center of gravity, but she’s using the litterbox well and has no trouble getting to her food dish or asking for a head rub. My name is Kahuna and I am described as a spayed female, tan Mastiff and Pit Bull Terrier.

You will find me in Kennel # Q06.

The shelter thinks I am about 5 years old.

I am available for adoption! Want to know more about me? Call 925-608-8400 for more information about my medical and behavior history, or submit a Dog Adoption Application and somebody will call you soon to discuss my needs and next steps. You may also visit the shelter to adopt in-person. We will give priority to in-person adoptions. For online applications, you must include an Animal ID #, and you may include up to 3 animals on one request. Once your request is submitted, a member of our team will be in touch with you by phone, often the next day but within 72 hours.

I have been at the shelter since Jul 10, 2021.

HAPPY UPDATE - PEARL WAS ADOPTED AND LEFT THE SHELTER ON 7/9/21!! 😽

PEARL - ID

Pearl came to Contra Costa Animal Services (Martinez, CA) as a stray cat from Richmond, CA. The medical staff determined that her right eye had been surgically removed, but it was not clear when or why this was done. It's a bit of a mystery that no one has been looking for this sweet kitty. This could be an opportunity for you to be that someone if you might be looking for a petite gentle and friendly feline companion. And please share this post just in case we can find the person who could be her owner or caretaker. Thank you!!

Here's a link to her shelter profile if you have any questions or might be interested in adopting Pearl https://petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=CCST.A0963857
