E collar step 3- add command for recall
Now you have completed steps in the last two videos it’s time to add in the command “come “.
I always wait to add commands until I can be sure the dog fully understands what I want. This is an important step in order to avoid building conflict with the come ( or any) command.
Often people put in commands when the dog is too distracted, or does not fully understand the command.
Remember, it takes around 400 repetitions to fully learn a behavior!
E collar step 2
E collar step 2- moving off of leash pressure
Now that your dog is responding consistently on leash, you can start work on recall without the leash!
1- make sure you have completed steps from the 1st video
2- Start in a low distraction environment , have them drag the leash just incase.
3- Tap the e collar as you walk backwards as soon as they turn YES- pause and reward!
E collar Recall lesson 1 example “Combining leash pressure and stim. “ Before this step, I make sure the dog is comfortable being guided on leash, if not this step is done with just leash before adding the e collar.
E collar step 1- combining leash pressure and low level stim
I don’t like to post too much E collar stuff, it’s common to be judged and labeled a “old school, or forceful trainer.” Anyone who knows me knows how serious I am about engagement and building a solid reward system- these tools do not replace that. Can you train without e collar ? Of course!
Proper* use of e collars can be a great way to build a reliable recall and greatly reduce your dog’s risk of injury. For the Anti E collar people- Yes, it can also be used in a way that scares and confuses dogs, but so can anything. Let me say that we don’t use e collars to teach, we use them for communication. Teddy already has a solid reward system and understands Yes = Food.
I hear all the time “I would never shock my dog, I only use beep or vibrate.” You will find for most all dogs the vibrate can be very overwhelming and scare your dog. That’s why I choose to use low level stim. ( many collars on the market come with very high stim settings , and that’s why I’m so adamant on using these brands. This is an example of how I personally like to start E collar training.
Step 1- use a quality e collar (dogtra or educator collars are our top favorites- this is the mini educator et300), make sure collar has good connection to skin ( this collar has a long hair adapter )
Step 2- In a low distraction environment ( this would be your house for most dogs) Find lowest number dog can feel- Teddy is on level 5 here, - always find the level before you start ( I can’t feel this on my own hand until 12..) when most people feel this collar they are really surprised we work so low, but remember this is for communication, not corrections. ( Most dogs range from a 3-15 on this collar when starting) - it goes to 100. Most collars bought in stores or online I can feel at 1, and actually are uncomfortable or “shock” me at 2.. and that’s NOT fair. Dont risk your dog’s wellbeing for a discount.

Adventure boarder Charlie !
This old guy is in great shape! Heat didn’t stop him today!
Muzzle training?
There are so many reasons to muzzle train, but 90% of people I talk to wait until they have serious issues before they start. When they do, it's often rushed and dogs learn to hate it rather quickly.
This is a old throw back video that shows my process for teaching proper muzzle conditioning.
1- Comfortable basket style muzzle
2- Make it fun!
Don't wait!
Board and Train Max working on his reactivity issues
Big improvements here for sweet boy Max. He’s highly reactive to seeing other dogs on leash. Thanks to adventure boarding dogs Arnold and Charlie for helping with training today!

Doberman bathroom bells training
Adeline working on her “bells” command today so her owners can use them for when she wants to go out! Always teach the behavior first so it’s easy to ask for the command when you want to use it in real life scenarios!
Puppys first place session!
Holy moly! Very impressive!
Thank you Erik and Artemis for stopping over to give Tao a new distraction dog to work around. Tao is here for board and train and has some big reactivity issues. Before just putting on the leash would throw him into a frenzy jumping and biting the leash ( and you). He had to be muzzled at all times anytime he had the leash on. Here is an example where we are using multiple tools to help him stay under control. E collar overlaying with leash pressure and prong for control. The most important tool- counter conditioning.
The YES marker is used to pinpoint any behavior we find desirable. At first any time he glances at the other dog he gets a YES before* he has the chance to react. Here he is now offering the behavior looking at the dog then looking back at me for the reward. Big progress from this guy.
Overtime this process can actually change the dogs emotional response when seeing certain triggers . Im not a fan of correcting the dog for looking or reacting, just for breaking obedience.
Tools like prong collars and e collars can cause more harm than good with bad timing and misuse. It’s important not to prove the dog right- looking at other dogs is bad. First step is teaching them that looking calmly* is actually highly rewarding.
He’s definitely proven to be a hard case. Definitely making progress!
