Woohoo!!!! One week away from offering chiropractic adjustments at . Perfect for older dogs, working dogs, or athletic dogs.

I hope many dog owners take advantage of this offer! Dr Lisa Marinho with .health is one of the few vets on island that practices holistic animal care!

Pinky, my 11 year old English Bulldog will be getting an adjustment. Every time she gets an adjustment she has increase mobility in her hips and sits straight. Adjustments increase mobility and can reduce inflammation and more.

I figured I would make this a very Happy Aloha Friday and reintroduce myself. It’s actually my least favorite thing to do… talk about myself.

The past year I read book “Be Useful”. I found it interesting that he believes your true passion in life is developed in childhood. It’s something I cannot argue with. Ever since I can remember I’ve been obsessed with dogs and I’ve always had a desire to question and contemplate the way things are.

My desire to learn, question, educate myself and others evolved to include dogs. I lost my first dog to renal failure before he was even 10 years old. I’ve seen many friends and family dogs die too young. I’ve spent hours reading labels in the box stores trying to figure out the best treat or food for my dogs, only to walk away confused and aggravated. I’ve had itchy and sickly dogs. I’ve left a vet office feeling hopeless.

I questioned, I researched, I learned. Now I educate dog owners and manufacture healthy products. I do it for my dogs. I do it for ALL DOGS!

I have developed a very strong business ethos. Locally sourced, locally made, highest quality of products, supporting our community, involving our community and more.

Lava Paws is really my lifestyle brand. Nowadays it goes further than making treats or even raw food. It’s looking at our dogs holistically. How can we support their diet, exercise, cognition, bones, environment, muscles, brain…

All of this and more are all connected and can determine your dog’s overall health. So yes while we mainly focus on diet and some enrichment, we are always giving people information on vets, trainers, classes, new science, etc to address your dog’s other needs.

So when you walk into one of our stores I hope you can see our lifestyle brand. When you leave our store, you can walk or click confidently knowing that you are providing your dog a better life.

I don’t think I’ll ever lose my passion to provide in one way or another for dog owners. I know I’ll always have at least one dog in my life, currently there’s 6!

I couldn’t be more proud of Buddy! 32 out of 84 dogs in his jump height for senior league! Senior level is designed for dogs that have titled in Excellent or above. And guess what, Buddy has zero AKC agility titles!!!

This past league season, I stepped out of my comfort zone and said “we’re playing with the big boys.”

I’m so happy we did it because new skills came up and we had to work through them.

Honestly, that’s how I live my life. I’m always looking for ways to improve and I love a good challenge. I especially love a good challenge when it comes to working with my dogs.

I can’t wait to see where we go!

We are happy to announce that Dr. Lisa Marinho will be offering chiropractic adjustments tentatively 8/29, 9/12, 10/10, and 10/24 at our Kailua-Kona location at 74-5605 Luhia St. Walk-in's only from 3-5pm, $75 per adjustment.

Ice Cream Social and Sale

August 31 both locations will be having an ice cream social and sale! The ice cream will be made by yours truly and I promise you, your dogs will LOVE it. This event is a BIG MAHALO to you, our customers.

Nosework is coming to Kona!

Mark your calendars because we’re celebrating Dogust! And my birthday month, Labor Day, and the 5th Saturday of the month!

What’s my secret to Buddy’s success????

Y’all should know I will always say diet! Diet is the number one most critical component to your dog’s health and longevity. Having your dog in its best shape possible makes training so much easier and rewarding.
Not only does a fit dog work better and harder, they are also in less pain, can train longer, and are less prone to injuries.

Other than diet, what’s our secret?

Having the right “tools”!

Easy to dispense, high value treats and toys and a training pouch that isn’t Velcro, washes well, and holds up to our rough lifestyle.

For training, I use a mix of freeze dried treats such as and cheese. I also switch to using toys such as a frisbee or ball. Buddy is not a tug dog. He loves flying to the frisbee and ball. If it weren’t for a frisbee, I would have a hard time at distance work. It enhances his drive.

makes, IMO, the best training pouches. They also make three different styles. Whether you’re just using the pouch for treats or want a F***y pack for longer day adventures. I actually have all three sizes depending on what we’re doing that day.

Final note. Buddy isn’t a natural at agility or whatever else he does. We adopted a scared, timid dog that right away wanted to please. I saw his potential, his drive, his smarts. I took that and I trained. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to support this phenomenal dog.

You have to start somewhere and we’re here to support that journey.

Buddy’s Team lol. They keep him entertained, fit, and acting like a dog. Both Pokey and Pinky will never be agility dogs but that doesn’t mean they can’t stay fit! I mean look at Pokey. He’s 105lbs of pure muscle.

Round 5 results are in! Currently, Buddy finished 24 out of 76 dogs in his jump height. Some teams still need to submit scores.

Yesterday, we worked on the final course and oh boy is it a fun one. Tunnels, contacts, pinwheels. And the amount of distance I can get with Buddy is just incredible.

Every time we’re out on the field training and working together is the best time. I can’t wait to see where we go!

Life is always good when I have Buddy with me.

Crazy to think this time last year he was lost in the dense forest for 5 days. He eventually tracked his way back to the trailhead and was picked up by someone who was looking for him.

Everyday I’m thankful for this fun, happy-go-lucky dog that is always down for whatever. The companionship we have together is so special.

I had to wait to post this but here’s a feel good post!

This Chow now known as Buddy (perfect name btw) has been hanging around Volcano Village for a year and made himself a home in a cat colony. People tried many times to rescue him but he’s a shy lad.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by someone who gained his trust and wanted advice on CBD products to transition him into the car and to his new home.

I have a huge soft spot for chows and strays and knew it wasn’t really possible for me to physically help with a situation like this.

That being said, I’m happy to lend my expertise and also donate products.

Thursday, the community got the best news! Our chow boy was safe, off the streets, and adjusting in his new home!

We’re also here for his future. We’re happy to keep donating CBD products as he gets comfy in his new home and gets a good groom etc.

And this is why I love Volcano. We are small but mighty community. So many of us were concerned for his well being. This is definitely a story should cover!

Today’s agility field. A lot of people have been asking if I train or offer training.

Nope. I only like learning for myself so I can train and do better for my own dogs.

Dog trainers/behavioralists and good ones are SAINTS!!!!

I remember my first couple of times watching people compete with their dogs on the agility field and thinking two thoughts. 1)WOW it’s really amazing teamwork. And 2) Buddy and I can compete at this level.

The results I have with Buddy is partially his drive and willingness to work for me but also the fact we practice and train at least 4 days a week. And when we’re not on the field training, we train at home.

It’s not easy. It’s not always fun (although I try not to let him know that), we train in extreme heat, rain, cold, etc. Some days we’re on fire, other days we look like s**t and have to dial it down and do things that are easy.

This course is a fast jumpers course. We have a beautiful, clean and fast 26 second recorded run, but the time to beat is 24 seconds.

3 things I want to improve on this run are tighter turns, complete weave pole independence from a fast tunnel, and layering distance handling.

Now is where we have a blast. Breaking it down, fine tuning my handling and Buddy’s body and speed.

I might just film us on Thursday to post for you guys to see Buddy run.

We're fundraising for our wonderful employees!

As many of you know, Lava Paws is a very community focused business. Over the years, I developed relationships with our farmers, customers, and employees. I consider everyone family and we all support each other in many ways.

What many of you don't know is that all Lava Paws products are made by two employees, Ka'i and Lei and sometimes me.

I must have been crazy or extremely hopefully. Just about 2 years ago we made it official and welcomed Pinky into our home.

Y’all swipe to see her transformation. It’s insane!!!

Recently, did a before and after of a caviler. So I did one for Pinky.

Honestly, I thought adopting a 9 year old bulldog we would be dealing with end of life care. Instead, I worked with Pinky with light exercise and switched her to a low fat, high fiber/whole prey model raw diet. Now she’s on a normal raw diet.

2 years later and there’s no stopping her. My goal for her is to be one of the oldest bulldogs. People either tell me I don’t feed her enough or they compliment me on how fit she is and always ask if she’s a puppy.

For those that have owned an you know just how special they are! I’m happy we get all this extra time together.

How I’ll be celebrating the Fourth of July!

Folks you have 2 days to set your dog up for success! Our shops will be closed on Thursday. But please prepare your dog.

We have CBD oils and CBD treats, snuffle mats, slow feeders, lick mats, raw meaty bones, high value treats such as Norm Freakshakes and Green Juju Freeze Dried whole food bites.

We also have a few flirt poles left. Flirt poles are great for those dogs that love toys and have a drive. Play with your dog during the day and make sure they release some of their energy.

What do I put on Lick Mats?

Short answer, any high value human food that’s safe for dogs.

Long answer. It depends on how creative I feel. You will never see me posting a beautifully executed lick mat that’s themed or nicely decorated. Ain’t no one has time for that. lol.

I had every intention of freezing these mats to make them last longer, but by the time I had grabbed my phone someBuddy was already grinding.

ProTip. Don’t leave your dog alone with a mat, they will chew it.
And freezers make great tables to work on.

Today we had a blast at a low key NADAC trial and I’m so thankful for the experience. We, ok probably me, have such a hard time with start line stays. Today was a fairly mellow trial and it was great practice for his start line stays. He really only got over amped with the final run, which were all tunnels.

Buddy had a lot of firsts. First agility title, in Novice Tunnelers, First Q in any type of Standard/Regular event, three amazing start line stays, and he had 3 out of 4 qualifying runs, with 2 first place and 1 second place finishes.

As his handler I felt the most confident ever. We haven’t done many other dog sports but the connection you develop with your dog on the agility field is something special. I absolutely love it. I love working with a fast dog, a driven dog, a dog that’s always happy, one in his element.
