Reactivity! 💚🐾
Did you know something as simple as a leash can contribute to reactivity?
Reactivity is different for every dog I work with and there is no cookie cutter training approach to working on reactivity either!
Every dog has different motivations for what they do! Getting to the “why” behind a behaviour is what helps you train that specific dog!
For PJ, the leash creates a conflict of not being able to move away. You can see she is showing teeth with lips pulled back, lunging forward towards Harlaigh at the fence as well as stiff forward body position.
In contrast, PJ in the second video is with Westley bouncing around, making her own space when she feels the need to as well as engaging in play bows and “chase me” play behaviour.
Both dogs in the video are doodles and have a very mouthy play style with open mouths and teeth showing. This is their normal play.
Behaviour is not good or bad, it is just a form of communication. If we take the time to listen and find the “why” behind that behaviour, we can help our dogs thrive and effectively train!

Reactivity Group 💚
Today was our first official Real Life Reactivity Group Event and to say it was a success would be an understatement! The whole reason we made this group was so that we could “find our people” who want to work on their dog’s reactivity with a group who has similar training philosophies and an understanding of the challenges that come with owning a reactive dog. We had 8 incredible dogs who have varying levels of reactivity come to the event and practiced working around their triggers! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Love Notes from VIP Indie’s Mom & Dad 🐾“We have a 2 year old border collie who is full of energy, very sensitive and can sometimes be reactive in certain situations. We wanted to include her in our wedding so badly, but we were unsure how to make it happen successfully. Then we met Sam! She came to our house twice before the wedding to meet Indie, answer all the questions we had and work through potential scenarios that could be challenging for Indie at the wedding. She was so good with her and I instantly felt so much better. Sam stayed at our house with Indie the day before our wedding. She sent us photos the whole time of all the enrichment games they were playing and private dog parks they were visiting. The day of the wedding, Sam brought Indie to the venue early to let her get comfortable before all the guests arrived. She also helped tremendously with photos, and worked closely with our photographer to get some amazing shots. She made sure that Indie had everything she needed to be successful for the day. Indie even walked down the aisle confidently! Then Sam snuck her away and took her home before the party started so she wouldn’t be overwhelmed. We cannot thank Sam enough for caring for Indie and helping us incorporate her in our wedding day. Three years ago today, our lives changed for the better 💚
Westley has taught me so many things over the last 3 years, but one of the most incredible gifts that he has given me is fear free training.
When we brought him home, I made a promise to him that no matter what, I would not use physical corrections to train him.
Little did I know that this promise would change my life and my career!

Resource Guarding
I live with 2 dogs who resource guard items from eachother. BUT they don’t guard every item from eachother in every situation!
Every dog is different when it comes to resource guarding and some dogs don’t do it at all, but here are the things that resource guarding is:
* Resource guarding is based on what the dog finds high value
* Resource guarding is situational
* Resource guarding is normal behavior
* Resource guarding isn’t always about food
* Resource guarding can be trained using positive reinforcement and fear free methods
Management is KEY with resource guarding especially between dogs as you don’t want them to practice the behavior!

Puppy Play Breakdown 💚🐾
Understanding play is essential for advocating for your dog as well as knowing when to allow play to continue and when to take a break!
Some of the signs I love to see in this video are:
• Pauses in play (even if it is for a few seconds at a time)
• Play Bows
• Peanut (the larger puppy) is allowing Coco to move freely on top of him when playing * This has nothing to do with dominance or being the Alpha, just what I like to see for play dynamics with smaller and larger dogs *
• A back and forth mirroring of play behavior (mouthing, down lower etc..) or “dance” as I like to call it between Peanut and Coco
• Loose body language
