⚠️ Severe Weather Warning ⚠️

Storm Jocelyn is on her way to the UK, bringing with her extremely strong winds and yellow rain warnings with northern areas most likely to be affected.

If you have outdoor rabbits, please take precaution.

⛈️ Ensure outdoor housing is well protected from the elements, including strong wind and rain. Consider covering housing with blankets or tarpaulin.

☔ See that housing is raised, particularly in high-risk flooding areas.

🏠 In extreme circumstances, bring outdoor rabbits inside into a cool room, such as a garage or conservatory, and keep them away from strong smells and noises.

We hear a lot of reasons why rabbit guardians can’t/won’t/don’t get their rabbits neutered. The 5 mentioned are just a snippet of some.

Neutering is incredibly important for every rabbit. Aside from the fact it prevents pregnancy, rabbits should be neutered to be able to live with a friend. It also help combat reproductive cancers. In fact females are at a 65% chance of developing uterine cancer by the age of 4! Neutering can help with toilet training, will likely stop urine spraying and aggressive behaviour.

We’ve had several operations this last week or so, all successful -

Rosie - previous owner’s vet wouldn’t spay as she’d struggled with anaesthetic , she was absolutely fine was eating and alert the same day

Jasmine - had previously had a lot of litters, recovering well

Mason and Zumer both neutered , Mason had a retained testicle but recovered well

Xena - been roaming for 2 years , likely an older girl , her spay was straight forward the vet found some broken teeth which were dealt with whilst she was under

Bleu - had a straightforward spay she was a little slow to recover but is now running around and fine .

Rueben - another straight forward neuter and good recovery

Penelope’s spay got cancelled but will be now at the end of the month

Most of us who have rabbits reading this love our bunnies like they are part of the family, and which is exactly right!

However, we must always be aware that there are differences between our furry family members and human children or human relatives.

Rabbits are a prey species, they don’t understand our language and we don’t completely understand theirs. They don’t enjoy walks, car rides, being picked up and cuddled, moving to new environments, going on play dates and many other things that human children might love.

Anthropomorphising (attributing human emotional and behavioural features to non-human animals) can be a positive way of connecting with our companion animals, but it can also be dangerous.

This doesn’t mean that rabbits are not individuals with their own needs and personality, but we should be very aware of their personal needs as a species and where this differs from our desires of them as companions.

We Have A Mission...

Welcome to The Lucky Clover Small Animal Sanctuary!

Based in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

We are a small, non-profit sanctuary that provide a safe and loving environment for small animals that cannot be adopted due to disabilities or ongoing health problems. We sometimes take in emergency cases and assist rescue centers when they are at full capacity. WE DO NOT ADOPT OUT ANIMALS.

The residents we currently care for are all fully vaccinated against rhd-myxi and rhd2, neutered, microchipped and live in RWAF approved enclosures, our residents are either free roaming or live in 8x10 sheds with permanent runs attached for 24/7 freedom.
