Thanksgiving wasn't quite what I had planned... This is a video of Kora, one of my 3 dogs that ingested euthanasia solution Thanksgiving morning. This is after she received a ton of meds, had her stomach pumped and an NG tube placed. This was the first time she was able to walk that day. Pardon my enthusiastic commentary, I was ecstatic to see her alive! 😁
Story time... On Thanksgiving morning, I let the dogs out for about 10 minutes. If you know me, I live in the middle of nowhere with no traffic and few neighbors. When I let them in, they had dragged a chunk of something dead into the yard. I took it away and didn't think anything of it (it's hunting season in Wisconsin. It happens). Shortly thereafter, they were wobbly and stumbling. I knew it was serious. I induced vomiting and threw them in the car. Kora was barely conscious when I arrived at the ER. The other two dogs are less severely affected. After lots of care in the ICU, meds and some stomach pumping Kora survived the night and steadily improved. All 3 dogs are now home and doing well. At that time we didn't know what caused their illness but thankfully they survived.
This morning I found the skull of the animal in the yard, which I identified as a medium sized dog, about 30-40 lbs. I got to thinking and ordered an over the counter drug test kit from Walmart (did you know they have those 😂)? Tonight I tested the tissue on the carcass and it came back positive for barbiturates (ingredient in euthanasia solution)! Photo in comments...
I figure the body was dumped and then some wild animal dragged it close to my house. Then the dogs found it. For the love of God, please have your euthanized pets cremated and don't dump them in the country! If you bury them, bury them deep in the ground so nothing can dig them up! Euthanasia solution remains in the body and will poison anything that eats those tissues!!
I felt I needed to share to increase awareness. I'm so thankful my dogs are okay! Huge
"Dutton" ❤️❤️❤️ He has a home, but I have more like him. Ready to go Sept 28.
