Recently I paid for and refreshed my IMDT understanding of Recall
I thought there must be something I am missing with Annie 😂
Maybe I am 'tired'
Maybe I am ready for a break?
Safe to say I am not missing anything 👍
Annie is Annie
I understand her background
I understand her breed
I understand it will take time
Im impatient
Im 'comparing' ...... guilty as charged that is for sure!
I am learning about her personality
I am learning about her motivations
I am learning
Always........
And I LOVE it
I absolutely love learning every day.....
I think in life if you can truly say that you have nothing to learn thats a sad sad day....
I am also 64% of my way through a 3 year level 6 behaviour qualification ❤️ with The School of Canine Science
However in 2022 /2023 'life' momentarily took over
I should have qualified in July 2024
But that's okay
I am a completer finisher - its who I am
What I have learnt about a dogs life, the loss and the grief was also important learning
Along with the rescue of a 2 year old with 'emotional' trauma
The rehabilitation and training journey with her
A triple break ankle surgery and patience
All incredibly fabulous learning
Watch this space for the 100% moment for the Level 6 🙈🙆‍♀️
It may take some time
And thats okay 👍

Note to self
Stop falling in love with every dog I see
But really.......❤️😉😂
This beautiful rescue has amazing parents!
They are privileged not spoiled
They are a rescue
I LOVE that 😉❤️
Rescue's are beautiful and I feel blessed to be a part of their journey
We looked at:
Frustration
Recall
Emergency Stop
Triggers
The 3 d's and how they impact
Why some have 'confinement distress' in crates (having travelled for 4 days in one! being 'eye balled!)
Human kit
Hound kit
Ideal training venues V more triggered training venues
Whistle for recall
Engagement
The 3 Ds (Distance, Duration and Distractions)
Motivations
We went to the park (real life)
We trained at home
We laughed.....
There were bloopers....
We celebrated the WINS
We learned from the tricky moments
I fell in love with that face! ❤️😉

Whistle training up the moors today she is doing great, using whistle as just one method of recall….using food, middle, toys as a reinforcer…still don’t trust it up against a human or dog, but Rome wasn’t built in a day & I am 100 % surveying the environment!

I have been seeing lots of posts recently along the lines of "I need a home boarder to look after my dogs in one or two weeks' time. Unfortunately, home boarders are few and far between and with good reason . We have to be licenced and checked with regular council inspections, have some formal qualifications such as canine first aid, and be heavily insured. We are also limited on numbers personally. I am licenced for 3 dogs (excluding my own), but we like to stick to around 2 where we can. Along with this, there is lots of paperwork, meet and greets, and trial stays that need to be done before we can bring your dogs into our homes. It is for these reasons that we book up very quickly , often 6-12 months in advance. Personally, I also give priority over dates to existing customers and dogs we already know and have looked after before. Because of this, we also rarely have cancellation slots. It is not always possible to accommodate last-minute requests. This is especially true in the school holidays. However, this being said, in the comments of these posts, I often see unlicensed or kind-hearted people offering to look after these dogs. That sounds great in theory, right? But what happens if your dog escapes from an unsecured garden and gets hit by a car? Or gets injured? Bolts away? or you drop your dog off never to be seen again? Unlikely, but it happens. Would it be worth it for your last-minute trip away? or to avoid that ££ per night fee from a licenced boarder? I recently heard of a boarder who was boarding a dog that had an accidental injury on a walk . The total cost of the vets bills was over £1100! The dog received first aid treatment on site and was rushed straight to the vets. Her client paid £0 because she was heavily insured and prepared for such an event. So if any one complaines about filling in paperwork, getting extra vaccines or paying the prices of a home boarder please just think , do your homework on your boarding establishment and plan for who will care for your dog well BEFORE booking your next trip away!
Possibly even have a plan B in place just in case - sometimes even the best made plans fall through.

Apologies for the rant, but I've been turning down more and more last-minute requests every week.

Thank you again for all your strong support.

Photo just for fun it's Otis, no he isn't in jail just escaped up the top of his garden lol
Much Love
Shirl xx

🥵 DOG CRATES & HOT WEATHER! 🥵

Last night this guy had me up twice. He’s not very good at communicating he needs to go out and does displacement behaviours like rolling upside down making a quacking noise, a weird burping noise or pacing up and down the hallway.

Despite having the fan on in the hall and access to a cold, hard floor in different areas, he was too hot!

Dogs often change their position and location multiple times across a sleep/rest period. This is especially the case for thick or double coated breeds or individuals who ‘run hot’.

Amigo and Kanita will stay in their beds in the bedroom all night but sometimes Kanita gets out of her bed to lie on the floor.
(Yes, they sleep in our bedroom! They have the choice to sleep elsewhere, but they want to sleep close as a group).

However, across the evening when we are all hanging in the lounge all three dogs are changing where they rest frequently. With the current heat, despite having a fan on, they are changing positions about 2-3 times each per hour!

One reason dogs change the location or position of where they sleep is to regulate their body temperature.

Another reason is that different sleeping positions may better support different phases of sleep.
Being able to stretch out fully promotes REM sleep- the phase of sleep where memory consolidation and recovery from stressors is at optimum!

Think how about your quality of sleep lying down vs when sat upright! Do you do the nodding dog? 😴 🛌

Taking this species-specific sleeping behaviour and the current hot weather into consideration, it’s important to consider whether your set up for where your dog sleeps is allowing them to regulate their temperature.

Whilst positioning a fan towards a dog who is crated is considerate to them over heating, dogs who aren’t crated can demonstrate a preference to move away after a duration of sitting in front of a fan. 🪭

It’s not uncommon for dogs to suddenly develop an aversion to their crates during hot weather. This may be due to heat, or even due to an increase in audible sounds at night due to open windows 🪟

My preference is that dogs have the freedom to regulate their temperature and stretch out fully by being given more than one option of where they can sleep rather than contained in an area with limited space.

A compromise to providing total free range- where your dog can access multiple sleeping spots in various locations and of various surfaces- may be a dog bed in a room behind a stargate, or a crate with an open door paired up with a large puppy pen. However, be mindful the only padded surface isn’t in a small, contained space or that a hard floor is the only alternative to a thick, cushioned bed! A nice rug or padded mat may provide an in between.

If your dog genuinely loves their crate and considers it to be their consistently comfy bed and safe place - they’ll go inside on their own accord and stay inside even when the door is left open.

It's HOT out there! ☀️ 🔥 Please be cautious about having your dog accompany you to outdoor events (especially if they are on pavement!) and be sure they have lots of shade and fresh water when they do need to be outside. Do you know how to recognize signs of heat stroke in dogs?

If you observe these signs, get your dog out of the heat and to a veterinarian immediately - heat stroke can escalate fast!

Read more about it here: https://otto.vet/pawsitive-heatwave-solutions/
