How’s your day going?
Sometimes I think clients forget that veterinary professionals also have the trials and tribulations of pet ownership…..

My morning went like this: 🥱☕️🩹🤕😋😋🙀🤦🏻‍♀️🤬💊🐕🤮😱🤦🏻‍♀️💊🐺🤮🩹😅👍🏻

River has been bandaged for a few days because she literally runs her paws off.
I went to the office to work.
Walked back inside to no bandage on River and no significant bandage material on the floor.
Making the assumption that she chewed it off and ate it, I took her to the office to induce vomiting- which worked! Aaaand there was no bandage material in it.
Sooooo.
Round 2: grab Kvichak (the husky) and induce vomiting. Bandage material acquired.
Morning spent and now I have two sulky dogs that wasted their breakfasts.

Sigh.

A month from today the CDC will implement new, specific requirements for dogs entering or returning to the US.

There seem to be significant nuances to the requirments depending on where and when your dog received their rabies vaccination.

Without exception,
*dogs must be at least 6 months or older to enter or return to the US.
*dogs must have an ISO-compatiable microchip
*the microchip number must be documented on all required form and vet records
*dogs need a completed CDC Dog Import Form including a photograph (this is completed by owner or custodian)

requirements beyond these will depend on where and when your dog was vacinnated, where it has been the prior 6 months and when the microchip was implanted.

your dog must receive its initial (first) rabies vaccine at least 28 days before leaving the United States.

Dogs must have an ISO-compatible microchip, and the microchip must have been implanted on or before the date the current rabies vaccination (if required) was administered. Rabies vaccinations received prior to the implantation of a microchip are considered invalid.

Here is a link to an interactive tool that will guide you to specific requirements based on your situation.

Better to plan ahead to be sure you have a smooth transition with your best bud.

Last weekend, Dr Julie travelled to Denali National Park to provide training to the kennel staff.

For over one hundred years, the Denali Sled Dog Kennels, has been the only sled dog kennel in the National Park Service and one of the oldest sled dog kennels in the country. While sled dogs have been relied upon as a traditional method of transportation in Alaska for many hundreds of years, human and canine rangers have worked together since 1922 to uphold the tradition of preserving the park’s vast wilderness by dog team. The role of the Kennels has evolved over time. While dog teams once focused on patrolling boundaries to prevent poaching, today they assist scientists and park staff by providing reliable transportation in extreme winter conditions, monitor conditions and establish routes for winter recreation, and transport heavy supplies for maintenance projects in wilderness areas where motorized tools are not allowed.

A NEW APPROACH TO END-OF-LIFE CARE FOR PETS
THREE LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESSES COLLABORATE
(Anchorage, Alaska) April 2, 2024 — A new collaboration will soon give Alaska’s pet owners more options for their pets’ end-of-life care. In an effort to bring a comprehensive approach to to these life events, Ritual Bough, 2 Tails Veterinary Services and Flameless Cremation Services are announcing a collaboration that will offer customizable, pet euthanasia packages that include everything from a pre-visit consultation with a death doula, on-site humane euthanasia to aftercare of the pet’s body and legacy projects.

Julie Raymond-Yakoubian is a credentialed doula who offers end-of-life planning, legacy discussions and memorial ceremonies through her business, Ritual Bough. While much of her work is with humans, she extends similar services for pets.

2Tails Vet has been offering mobile, at-home vet services for more than five years. A lifelong Alaskan, Dr Julie has performed euthanasia for pets in clients’ homes, by lakes and in meadows. She strives to ensure her patients have the most peaceful and compassionate passing possible.

Rachel Bernhardt recently opened Flameless Cremation, the first of its kind in Alaska, to offer an innovative alternative to traditional cremation including a “Sendoff Suite” where families can gather to say good-bye to their beloved pet.

The end-of-life experience is personalized to the owner’s wishes and budget and prioritizes dignity, respect, and love. The partnership recognizes that pets are family members and owners desire a more thoughtful and distinctive approach to their pet’s last days and final resting.

Cost varies depending on many factors. Flameless Cremation has two full-service package options and offers most of their elements individually.

The three woman-owned businesses will work together with the customer to help see them through this difficult time.

Cultivating Wellness

At 2 Tails Veterinary Services we think that caring for ill and injured animals is important, but even more important is preventing sickness and injury. This is why our motto is: Cultivate Wellness.

The Wellness part is simple: we don’t like seeing animals in pain. We want happy, healthy patients just like you want happy, healthy animals. But how do we prevent disease and injury?

To cultivate is to grow, to encourage or improve by labor, care, and study. This is what we strive towards. We listen to learn the habits and histories of your animals, we examine their environment, nutrition, and themselves, we observe them relaxed in their normal setting.

Then we treat.
