🔹PUPPY CLASSES: For PUPPIES 10 Weeks to Five Months🔹

⭐️⭐️⭐️AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy⭐️⭐️⭐️
On Tuesdays from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Instructor: J. McKay

Your puppy's early months are a critical informative time during which your puppy learns to interact appropriately with different people, dogs and environments that the world has to offer. This class will help you make the most of this developmental window and build the foundation for a friendly, confident, well-mannered adult dog. Off leash play will be at the discretion of the instructor. In order to be eligible for the AKC S.T.A.R® Puppy Test, puppies must attend six weeks of classes.

Puppies should have their standard vaccinations as per their vet's recommendation. Rabies vaccine is required for dogs over four months of age.

🔸FAMILY MANNERS: FOR DOGS 5 MONTHS AND OVER🔸

🔹Family Manners Foundation
On Mondays from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Instructor: K. Naito

Introduce your dog to the skills it needs to become a well-mannered family pet. In this class, owners will learn to use dog-friendly training methods as they teach their pets to sit, lie down, wait, walk on a loose leash, come when called and more. This class will help you build a strong relationship with your dog, and to manage your pet comfortably in your home. These foundational skills are geared toward preparing your dog for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test.

Both you and your dog must be comfortable spending an hour with a group of canines of various sizes and energy levels

Special Requirements: No dogs in the first class

🔹Family Manners Skills
On Tuesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Instructor: N. Field
On Thursdays from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. Instructor: R. Galitsis

Now that you and your dog have learned the basics of reward-based training in Family Manners Foundation, you are ready to kick it up a notch. In this intermediate-level class, you will build reliability by training in an increasingly distracting environment and with gradually increased distance and duration, while fading the lures and additional prompts. The ultimate goal is a dog that will reliably respond to your cues no matter what is going on around him.

Prerequisite: FM Foundation or Instructor's approval

🔹Loose Leash Walking
On Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Instructor: N. Field, 3 week class
Is taking a walk with your dog on leash a bit of struggle? Does your dog pull and tug instead of walking nicely with you on a loose leash? If this is true for you and your dog, this mini class may be right for you. We’ll concentrate on only this skill, incorporating a variety of exercises to help improve your dog’s loose leash walking behavior.

Please come to class with a hungry dog, ideally who’s had some exercise before class, a variety of high value treats!

🔹AKC Canine Good Citizen Prep (CGC title)
On Tuesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Instructor: J. McKay, 4 weeks

PCOTC and the AKC believe that all dogs can be good dogs, and all owners can be great owners, all it takes is a little bit of training, lots of love, and of course, plenty of praise along the way. Canine Good Citizen is a 10-skill test that teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership. The CGC test will be administered in the final class of the session

🔴Tricks🔴
On Tuesdays from Noon to 1:00 p.m. Instructor: J, McKay, 4 weeks

Teaching tricks can be a valuable learning experience for you and your dog. They help you teach your dog to think and solve problems with you as a team, help you perfect your timing of feedback, and engage your dog's interest in all his training. Will introduce the use of targeting and props to turn a few behaviors into cute tricks. Use this class to round out your dog's education, show off his natural talent, and challenge him mentally while learning invaluable tricks for therapy work or everyday life. Skills learned will help in working toward and AKC Trick Dog title.

Prerequisites: AKC Star Puppy or Family Manners Foundation

🔹Help for Your Shy Dog
On Tuesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Instructor: J. McKay, 4 week class

Fear and anxiety are behind many behaviors that shy dogs may exhibit. Training in and of itself, while useful, may not be enough to address or change your dog’s fear responses.

If a shy or fearful dog is part of your family, this class will help you learn to read your dog’s body language, identify your dog’s triggers and how best to respond in a manner that creates emotional change within your dog. Once these concepts are learned, you can then apply them in real world, dynamically changing environments. Learn how to help your dog by working towards changing how your dog feels about things that scare them.

Prior to enrolling contact the Instructor to see if this class would be a good fit for your dog and you.

🔹Engagement Games
On Saturdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Instructor: J. Dinowitz, 3 classes

Engagement games will introduce effective ways for handlers to communicate with their dogs and get their attention. Great for dogs who get sucked in to their environment, or dogs that need to work on focusing at the start line. Engagement games will cover how to handle disengagement, determining thresholds, and using your dogs distractions to your benefit.

INTRODUCTORY SPORT CLASSES

🔸Bridging the Gap: An Introduction to Obedience for All Dog Sports
On Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Instructor: R. Pisani

After completing the Family Manners Skills classes, you may enjoy exploring the world of dog sports with your canine companion. All canine performance sports such as Agility, Rally and Competition Obedience require a solid foundation of the core skills; sit, down, stay, come and heel. The class will focus on skill building by teaching you how to use luring, shaping and targeting to train your dog. Using positive reinforcement techniques, the class will emphasize building a solid working relationship between you and your dog, built on a foundation of reinforcement, fun and attitude. This class will build the fundamentals for future competition. The class is structured to be taken only one session.

Prerequisite: Family Manners Skills or instructor approval

🔸Agility Foundations Essentials
On Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Instructor: M. Martin

Your starting point in the sport of agility. You begin with Agility Foundation Essentials and move on to each of the four Agility Foundation Concentrations when your team is ready. Teams will learn initial skills necessary to succeed in the sport. This skill-set will provide the foundation that all other agility skills will be built upon. Time and effort spent building a strong foundation makes all other agility training easier for you and your dog. The teamwork between handler and dog are developed and strengthened in foundations.

PREREQUISITES: Basic obedience skills such as sit, down, stay, focus on handler. No aggressive dogs. Minimum age 6 months.

🔸Introduction to Rally
On Thursdays from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. Instructor: J. Dinowitz, 3 classes

This class is an introduction to the essential foundational skills needed for success in Rally competition, on both ends of the leash. The emphasis is on using positive reinforcement to create precision and enthusiasm, and to set up for success at the Novice level and beyond. The core AKC Rally Novice exercises are introduced individually and incorporated into short courses for practice.

Prerequisite: Family Manners Skills, Bridging the Gap, Pre-Competition/Pre-Novice, or the equivalent. Contact the instructor for approval.

🔸Intro to Disc Dog
On Mondays from 7:00 to 8:00.m. Instructor: M. Levy

The goal of this class is to teach you and your dog how to safely throw and catch a flying disc. The main focus is teaching handlers to throw accurately, and working out any problems with starts, catches or returns. A simple, time-tested program is used to help each handler throw consistently and, more importantly, safely. A step-by-step program is also used to introduce the disc to your dog, develop drive for the disc, and turn the furry member of your team into a disc catching superstar.

We will cover the tools of the trade (which discs to use), a throwing program for the handler, and a method to teach your dog to catch safely and reliably along with catching on the flanks and on a circle. By the end of the class you will be able to enjoy a friendly catch, and play some really neat games with your dog.

Dogs must be able to fetch toys/balls/discs. Dogs must be comfortable working in a group class. One working team will be on the floor at a time. Dogs should be comfortable in crates while other dogs are working. A competition quality disc will be provided to each team. So that each team gets their fair share of floor time dogs must have a solid recall (no zoomies).

Bring your buddy, and his favorite disc &/or toys. Dress comfortably and be prepared to smile a lot....

Did you know that PCOTC now offers Disc Dog classes with our very own Discologist Marty Levy? For the Nov./Dec. session we're offering Intro to Disc Dog, our entry level class that teaches you and your pup safe and effective ways to throw and catch a disc for hours of fun. Friday's classes are Master/Excellent but include Premier classes open to dogs competing at any level including Novice.

For exhibition only (FEO) will be allowed in all classes.

🔷There will be welcome gifts for Novice A competitors❢

🔷There will be a worker raffle and refreshments for all volunteers and of course our appreciation❢

🔷Massage by Nancy will be vending❢

🔷At our Trials we raise money to support different causes. In the past we have raised money for Not One More Vet. The AKC Junior World Team, Canine Cancer Research and to support humanitarian efforts in the Ukraine to name a few.

🔷A large basket of goodies for dogs and there humans will be used to raise money to support animal shelters/rescues in North Carolina impacted by the recent catastrophic flooding in the area. For your donation of $1 you will receive a chance to win. Pictures to come later as basket gets filled❢

Effective September 2024, all students taking an Agility, Obedience, Rally, Nosework or Disc class must be able to crate their dogs if requested by the instructor --except for Agility Essentials. Family Manners students are not required to have this skill.
