Mat's Cats - Street to Sweet Rescue Cats This page will feature cats we have rescued, are fostering and/or are available for adoption. We are just a couple who love cats and do what we can.

We have been feeding, helping and doing TNR for the street cats of Taipei for about 10 years now. For the last few years we have also been rescuing and fostering as many kittens as we can to get them ready for homes and save them from the streets. We currently have four rescue cats we call our own (Mouthy, Nami, Mindy and Quinn) and have a room dedicated to fostering and housing our rescues. We do

n't have a lot of room, or funds, but we do what we can, rescuing one or two who need our help and we do all we can to make them strong, healthy, sociable cats ready for homes. This page will feature the kittens currently in our care as they are prepared for new homes, as well as photos of our cats and street cats we help or need to try to rescue. Any help through sharing, liking and donating is always appreciated. Let's get these cats from Street to Sweet!!!

Sweet Tea slept for most of my visit today. He didn’t want to leave the warmth and safety of his blankets either. I did hold him for a short time and just pet him wherever he laid. He was purring like a motorboat, but he’s not well at all today. He won’t eat, has barely any energy to move and just looks worn out. How can a 3 year old cat be so old now?

We talked about how we hoped he could have come home with us, about what kind of big cat he will be soon and I played him some Van Morrison to calm him down and ease the inevitable.

Cats like Sweet Tea come around once in a blue moon. He’s one of the best ones.

Going back Tuesday (I hope) to give Sweet Tea some more love and attention. It’s heartbreaking seeing such a young cat aging so quickly.

Some love and attention for Sweet Tea at the shelter. They set him up his own private area, but he still comes out to spend time with other cats. Listen closely and you can hear his purring so strong. He seemed happy to see me. I just wonder if he knows what’s happening inside his body and how much he understands about his time left.

I’ll go back on Saturday for more love and attention.

Sweet Tea is back at 貓瘋非營利慈善貓專科醫院 CrazyCat NPV after emergency care for his rapidly progressing kidney failure. After a transfusion and care,he’s back where he knows as home for final care and comfort. Only three years old and sadly was never adopted due to his health issues. He’s the sweetest, greatest cat ever. He deserved the world.

I’m going there tonight with snacks and love for him.

Donations are being asked for to cover his care and food.

Next month will be 10 years since Luffy passed away so young. He wasn’t feeling well in this photo as his body was tired from fighting the FIP. The warm sun on the steps always helped.

This new guy showed up after the typhoon. He cries like he’s lost and knows people should be able to help him, but he’s too scared to approach them. He 100% didn’t grow up on the street. He’s now coming to the temple as he knows it’s a regular feeding location, but Buster doesn’t like him and he doesn’t know how to really defend himself well. He looks a lot like Buster, but his cries are that of a cat who is scared of where he is, not of the people there. For now I’m calling him Not Buster, but hopefully I can get him to a vet for a microchip check. Hopefully he isn’t a dumped cat.

Grandpa is stuffed up again, so we broke out the fan heater last night. Any closer and he’s going to burn off his whiskers and nose. 😂 Everyone else took their positions to get as much heat as possible.

Changing the blankets on the sofa and all the lazy monkeys climbed onto one small blanket. Not sure if they were protecting Grandpa, or slowly crushing him.

Nami wanted nothing to do with the pile-up.

Buster has taken to mostly living at the temple (like Grandpa, Toes and Sweetie did) pretty well. He’s rubbing my leg, talking and rolling on the ground after eating. He is a little scared of having his picture taken though.

Something is up in the area behind the temple though. The machine shop got rid of their feeding and watering bowls, and when I replaced them, they disappeared too. There is construction nearby, but I’m not sure why the cats aren’t welcome. And of the 6-7 cats that are usually around, I only see maybe 1-2 now. Luckily Buster and his partner Psycho stuck near the temple.

Buster isn’t fixed, so once I have more of his trust, I’ll break it and get his 🥜 clipped. He’s such a sweet guy.

We started feeding the temple cats almost ten years ago. It was always the same four… Toes, Grandpa, Sweetie and Scar. Toes was the leader and kept everyone together. When Toes got sick and came to live with us 3.5 years ago the other three stayed, but not always in the temple. They kept close by.

Scar disappeared about 6 month later and he always protected Grandpa. Grandpa then stuck by Sweetie. We fed them behind the temple, but not at the actual building. No cat has really stayed there since Toes left.

We took Grandpa home with us two years ago, and Sweetie disappeared about six month later (most likely due to kidney failure). Grandpa is the last Temple Cat, but now there’s a new face. This is Buster. He’s been around about six months, but in the last month he’s basically moved into the temple and prefers to eat there and talk to people. He’s no where near as friendly as Toes was, but he’s learning to trust people.

He waits for me every night on his ledge where he prefers his food. I can give him small pets while he eats now and he looks worried if I’m late (or maybe it’s just his eyes). He looks to be at least 3 and was in pretty rough shape when he first arrived. He’s gained weight and looks much healthier now with his daily diet. And he knows to ask for ‘Sweetie Pieces’ which are the special spoonfuls of wet food I always gave Sweetie when I fed her.

He’s still intact, so hopefully I can get him TNRd sooner than later, but I don’t want to break the trust we’ve built this past month or two. But it does need to be done.

No matter what, it feels nice to have a face to look forward to seeing at the temple instead of just ghosts and memories.

Mr. Pumpkin’s new favorite snack to try and steal. He got his own bag for his 2-Year Anniversary. And before anyone has a fit, he lived in the street for years so he has an affinity for fried foods, which we rarely give him. But as a treat once in a while, he loves it. This is not his normal diet!

Grandpa’s 2-Year / 730 Day Anniversary!!!

I’d be lying if I said I was expecting this day to come, but it doesn’t sursurprise me anymore. From a cat that was malnourished, FIV+, in early stage kidney disease, hated living inside, had no appetite, was suffering from a form of dementia, hated me with a passion and seemingly on his last legs… he’s now the ruler of the house (and the sofa) and with all the right medication, supplements and diet, he’s basically Benjamin Button in a cat.

His brother only started with us a few days shy of 400 days, and we lost his sister about 6 months after we took him in. Grandpa is now living the life of a king every day in honor of them. Tonight was his new favorite meal… cooked shrimp. If he could have it every day he would. He has another special snack coming, but we’ll post that one later as a video.

Happy two-years Mr. Pumpkin, GM Punk, Grumpy Face…

MAT’S CATS

In 2006 I came to Taiwan to do something different, and little did I know after 13 years I’d be taking care of more cat’s than I could ever have imagined.

I have been feeding, helping and doing TNR for the street cats of Taipei since arriving in Taiwan and there is no turning back now. For the last while we have also been rescuing and fostering as many kittens as we can to get them ready for homes and save them from the streets. We currently have five rescue cats we call our own (Mouthy, Nami, Mindy, Quinn and Coco) and have a room dedicated to fostering and housing our rescues.

It was just me and the cats for the longest time, then a little over 6 years ago the most wonderful person came into my life. Mouthy, Nami and Luffy took to her right away and they taught her (a person who had never had a pet or been around pets) just what the love of an animal can do for you. The cats fell in love with her, I fell in love with her and now we are married and dedicating as much time as we can to our cats, the local street cats and the rescues we take in. We don't have a lot of room, or funds, but we do what we can, rescuing one or two who need our help and we do all we can to make them strong, healthy, sociable cats ready for homes. This page will feature updated stories of cats we have rescued and are currently caring for, any kittens currently in our care as they are prepared for new homes, as well as photos of our cats and street cats we help or need to try to rescue. Any help through sharing, liking and donating is always appreciated. Let's get these cats from Street to Sweet!!!
