I’m just a little bit envious of Issy as this filly is quite special ☺️

Foals have been put together but Ava is being a very protective mum and not letting Rio too close at the moment. If you look at the photo of them you can see Ava giving him the stink eye and telling him to stay away 😆

Getting her legs under control 😆

18 hours old and passed her IGG with flying colours 🎉🎉🎉

She has beautiful straight legs with no issues so out in the paddock with her. Best place to be on what is going to be another scorcher here today 🔥

Issy you have bred a corker of a filly 🥰♥️🥰

Sorry for the delay in sharing photos! It was a long night, and I’m not as young as I used to be 😆.

🌟 Dawn was born at 1:10 AM this morning after a strenuous labour. She’s a big filly, and poor Ava had a tough time delivering her. Unfortunately, Ava tore quite badly 😢.

Dawn was a little slow to hit her milestones and struggled to latch on to feed. Ava’s udder was so full that her ni***es were almost nonexistent, making it difficult for Dawn to get a good grip. The first milk is absolutely vital for foals because it contains all the antibodies they need to fight infections. Foals are born with no immune system, and there’s only a short window for them to absorb those antibodies before their gut closes off to them. Ava wasn’t making it easier either—she’s so besotted with her foal 🥰 that whenever Dawn moved, Ava swung the milk bar around to keep her foal in sight. Ah, maiden mares 🙄.

Issy and I were up all night trying to help Dawn latch and drink. Between 4 and 5 AM, we managed to get four feeds in, and she finally started to get the hang of it. By 7 AM, when we went back out, we were thrilled to see her up and nursing on her own 🍼🎉, with Ava standing still to let her feed.

A lovely friend came by to stitch up Ava’s nether regions (and did an incredible job! 🙌), so we didn’t have to transport them in this extreme heat—it hit a sweltering 43°C/109.4°F today 🥵. I do have photos of the stitching, but they might be a little too graphic for Facebook!

Between all of that and trying to keep everyone cool, it’s been a busy day. Tonight, I’m finally off to get some sleep 😴.

🤞 Fingers crossed that Dawn passes her IGG test tomorrow 🙏.

✨ Ava's Story & Exciting Times Ahead! ✨

Ava was my 5th foal, born on 29th December 2010, on a stinking hot summer day 🌞🔥. I remember spending the day holding her mum under the shade of the trees 🌳 to keep her as cool as possible. From the moment she arrived, Ava was absolutely stunning and fiercely independent. 💖✨

Fast forward to early 2019, I started to worry as Ava wasn’t progressing in her training like I thought she should. 🤔 After some vet investigations, we discovered she had a thecal cell tumour on her right o***y. Thankfully, it was non-cancerous, but it was producing testosterone, leaving poor Ava confused about whether she was Arthur or Martha! 🤦‍♀️ After surgery to remove the o***y, she settled right down and was back to being her fabulous self. 💪💗

Now, we’re on the cusp of an exciting new chapter—Ava is about to have her first foal! 🍼🐴 Issy has carefully chosen Bluefields Dankeschoen OLD as the sire, and I just know this combination will create something extraordinary. 🌟

Issy’s dream? A black filly with 4 white stockings and a blaze. No pressure, Ava! 😆 But let’s be honest, whatever this foal looks like, it’s bound to be stunning. 🖤✨

Stay tuned, Ava is running her milk and this babe is coming!!

Does your horse 🐴 walk 🚶 all over you? Do they drag you around everywhere? Well, you're not alone! I've had many horses come through my hands 👐 that don't understand "how" to lead.

I HATE leading horses by holding on under the chin where the rope 🪢 attaches to the halter. It means that the horse "bumps" into the rope every time he moves his head and that the handler is "hanging" off the horse's head.

I like to teach my horses to control themselves and respect my personal space. A lot of so-called problems can be extinguished by teaching your horse this basic skill.

Check out this video for some tips: https://youtu.be/FM3tuCrKnXY
Feel free to share your experiences or let me know if you have any questions!

✨ No foal this morning, but we’ve definitely made progress! 🍼🐴

Ava has milk splashes down her legs, and the pH test is yellow! 🎉 I’d like it to be a touch more yellow, so I’ve added a comparison photo from the day Rihanna foaled. As you can see, Ava’s has a slight orange tint to it—very slight! 😆

I’m really hoping she’ll hold off until tomorrow evening/night due to the heat tomorrow, but we’ll see. 🤞💛

I’ve cancelled all plans and will be staying home until this precious bubba makes its way earthside. 🌍✨

Stay tuned—I’ll pop up a post this arvo about Ava and the stallion Issy used. 🥰🐴

🌟 It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks, and I haven’t had the chance to update you all on Ava! 🐴💛

This morning started bright and early with a trip to Adelaide for Rebel's shoeing. 🕊️☀️ By the time I got home this evening, it was feeding time, and I took a moment to check on Ava. To my surprise, I noticed the tiniest bit of wax on both teats and a decent udder! 😍✨

Of course, I couldn’t resist doing a milk test, and we have a pH of 6.2! 🎉🥛

I don’t think she will foal tonight as the pH colour still needs to be lemons 🍋 and I think the milk needs to be a little more opaque—but that can change in hours! ⏳ I don’t believe she’ll hang on until the 30th; in fact, I’d say the next 72 hours!! 😱 Being a maiden, anything could happen.

Fingers crossed she waits until Monday because we’re expecting a 40°C (104°F) day on Sunday, and that’s just a little too hot for a newborn foal! 🥵 🐴

Stay tuned— foal alarm is on and things are getting real! 🙌

PS Please send some foaling vibes to my good friend Julie (she helped make Ava's foal). Her mare is 374 days pregnant and still cooking her foal.

🐴 Introducing Ava!

Ava is my mare, but she’s having a foal for my very dear friend ❤️, and I’m foaling her down here. Her 340-day due date is December 30th, but as a maiden mare, anything could happen!

I’ll be sharing some of her story over the next couple of weeks while we wait for her to foal. I hope you’ll follow along 🥰.

📢 PS: I’ve told her we want a *daytime* textbook delivery only! 😉
