A fusion of obedience and teaching puppies how to navigate different obstacles!
In this workshop it dives into impulse control, game play, building focus, how to keep.our puppies entertained and general obedience skills too.
The workshop is Saturday 24th August at The Balloon Tree starting at 10am and is an hour and a half duration.
The workshop is £25 and you can book through the link in the comments 😀.
The aim of the workshop is to have fun with your puppy 🐶 building a bond and confidence moving forwards.

Today's class was all about body awareness! This is a great skill as it can teach so many different elements to our puppies as they develop.
Every one worked super hard and did well 😊

I can't train my dog because they are too stubborn to learn!

BUT......Wait......are they?

Dogs learn through trail and error there may be so many reasons why your dog is struggling picking up skills or techniques.

🐶 Do they understand what your asking?
🐶 Are you been clear with what you are asking?
🐶 Is the environment to distracting?
🐶 What is getting reinforced?
🐶 If we ask again do you still get the same result?
🐶 Is the dog worried, excited or frustrated by something.

It can be extremely frustrating for the other end of the lead too if our dogs are not responding to cues! However it is worth taking a step back and looking at what is going on.
Set yourself some goals to work towards 🙌

Pawsome Puppy Class 🐶 😍

Today's session was all about heelwork!
Heelwork is a crucial skill to teach our dogs as dogs have a naturally faster pace than humans! If we can teach them to walk with us it makes the walk so much nicer for both ends of the lead!
Every one worked really hard and did really well 😊

What a fabulous morning kicking off a new Pawsome Puppy Class 🐶
Today's focus was all about recall as this is an essential skill for all dogs to learn.
Everyone was absolutely awesome 👌 and can't wait to see how everyone progresses throughout the course 😀

Aversive Training 😕

There has been big uproar and quite rightly so for the usage of a whip during a horse training session.
Yet it seems fine to still use aversive equipment whilst training with dogs?
There wasn't much of a murmur when the government did a U turn on banning electric collars in the UK.
Aversive equipment seems to be acceptable in dog training programmes surely this is the time for all training techniques of ALL animals is scrutinised?
Let's make waves and turn the tide for positive reinforcement techniques 😊❤️🐶

"I wish I had known how hard it was going to be having a puppy and people talked about it more!"

This is something I heard in a consultation over the weekend and at the time didn't really think much of it!
However, with social media we often share our successes and how cute and adorable our puppy is whereas in reality we may really be struggling with them! They may be waking up multiple times a night, not getting the hang of toilet training, been destructive, mouthing, nipping and generally have us taring our hair out and sometimes leave us wondering why we got a puppy in the first place!
Then we look into how to train our dog and there are so many different techniques of what we SHOULD be doing and whether we are doing it RIGHT or WRONG?!
However, you are not alone! This is where hiring a professional trainer like me can help you :)
Choosing a trainer can be a daunting experience as sadly training is not a regulated industry! Do not be afraid to ask questions of how your dog is going to be learning and if it is how you would like your puppy to learn!
I am super proud to be accredited with the IMDT which means I have been externally assessed theoretically and practically on my skill set as a trainer using positive reinforcement methods developing your relationship with your puppy into a partnership.
So yes having a puppy is hard work but it is extremely rewarding and they are great members of your family

Social Dog Walk 🐕🐾🐾🐾🐾

The walk is this Sunday 30th June from The Balloon Tree 🌳 in Gate Helmsley at 10.30am.

This is a relaxed event where you can come join in a walk.
The walk is on lead and is a great chance to practice training skills and chat with other like minded owners.
You will also get chance to ask any questions you have about your dogs behaviour.

Training With A Nervous Dog!

Dogs can display anxious behaviours for many reasons when training with an anxious dog it's ensuring you go at your dogs pace.

Give them time to process information and support them throughout their training journey with you.

Keep things as predictable as possible as this will help them build confidence and keep things consistent when working with you.

Give them choices - it's not just about bribing your dog it's helping change underlying emotions too.

If someone asks for you or your dog 🐕 for space give them that space not every dog wants to say hello to everyone and their dog!

Have a plan - set small achievable goals so that you can see the progress your dog is making too.

Training With An Excitable Dog!!

Dog's can be excitable for many different reasons this could be down to many different factors including their age, breed and reinforcement history.

When I had my first dog a Border Collie called Skye she was a very energetic, fast paced dog! So, as a family we did lots of things with her lots of walks, fly ball, agility, lots of chasing a ball. We felt that we had to 'tire' her out so that she would settle in the evening. However, in reality the more we did the more exercise she needed and we were building ourselves our very own athlete!! We felt we were doing the best thing at the time 😃 and it is easy to fall into that same trap!

When training an excitable dog it is important to teach them how to settle and be able to switch off. Now this may sound harder than you may think!! However, when you are planning your training sessions break down each step to make it really easy for your dog to learn. I would take regular breaks and even playing sessions in between to help build more focus with your dog.

It can be very easy to get frustrated when training an energetic dog as it can seem like progress is slow at times but take training at your own dog's pace, set yourself small achievable goals to set you and your dog up for success during your training sessions together 😃.

The biggest behaviour I would teach would be to settle on a place. Ideally a raised bed as this is more easier for your dog to distinguish when they are on it or not. Slowly add the duration that your dog can settle to make it easier for you and your dog you could use a kong or natural chew that they can enjoy whilst they are on their place to help add duration of the behaviour.

Why I choose positive reinforcement!

Whilst out with my dog today I watched an owner with their dog. They heavily corrected their dog three or four times with a check chain yet it still didn't stop the behaviour it was getting corrected for 😕

Corrections don't provide your dog any information other than they are happening. The dog has to figure out for themselves what they need to stop doing.

Corrections don't help communication or bond with your dog. Plus its so easy for the human to become frustrated with the dog if they still aren't complying.

So what do you do?

🐾 Look at does your dog understand what you DO want?
🐾 What has previously being reinforced?
🐾 Have you given your dog a cue that you can reward?
🐾 How can you change the habit into something you like?
🐾 How can you make it better for the next time your dog is in the same position next time so you don't need to correct the behaviour.

Dogs live in a human world where they have to learn to live amongst us! They need to learn and develop we only have them for a short time!
Let's get rid of the corrections! Let's build string foundations and work together with our dog 🐕

The best cue I taught Duffy was how to settle!

This is probably the most underrated cue but is probably one of the best cues you can teach.
When I got Duffy she was such a fidget and found life very exciting so going places to eat or drink was hard work with her.
By teaching how to relax and settle helped her join in many more adventures and helped her regulate herself too!

The best cue I taught Skye was Recall!

Knowing she was going to be a high energy dog being a Border Collie!
She wasn't ever overly fussed about food so we had to search for other motivators to help reinforce good recall.
Her favourite motivation was definitely a tennis ball and loved a game!
Having a good solid recall definitely helps give your dog more freedom out and about.

Parkour Class 🐩 Today was the last session for the parkour course and everyone had a go at an obstacle course and we looked at adding a little distance for over, under and through with adding target training into.the mix too 😀 Not only is it fabulous for dogs to do but it also helps build focus and engagement together when out and about for walks too 😀 It had been such a great course and can't wait for the next one 🙌 If you would like to join in Parkour classes pop me a message to find out more details about joining in a course 🐶

How do you hoop? Do you remember Boris the Lurcher? This beautiful boy has recently been adopted and was struggling with reactivity towards other dogs when on lead which occasionally looked like his owners were walking a kangaroo! I am a professional dog trainer with over 16 years’ experience of working with dogs. I have always had a passion for dogs and consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to do a job I love. I am highly knowledgeable in a variety of dog training techniques, including behavioural modification techniques. I have also passed the IMDT and IMDTB accreditations. I really enjoy training dogs and helping owners develop their own skills to enhance their relationship with their dogs.
