If you have a Bully xl you are probably already aware & very worried about the proposed upcoming ban. One of the requirements will be for your dog to wear a muzzle in any public place. You will need to de-sensitise your dog to a muzzle to avoid them being stressed, anxious when wearing one & I strongly advise that you begin now. . Below is a super video which will guide you step by step through muzzle training.
It is actually a really good idea to de-sensitise any dog, whatever breed, to a muzzle, Any dog even the most passive, friendly can become reactive if they are suffering any sort of pain, as can an anxious, nervous dog. So if they are used to wearing a muzzle it will reduce the extra stress that would result from one just being put on them at vet or groomer visits for instance. Muzzles can also be very useful for dogs that have a habit of picking up & possibly swallowing everything they come across when out & about & so can keep them safe.

A video guide to created to assist you in teaching your dog to enjoy wearing a muzzle.

Sad for those who were going but due to the hot weather, a very wise decision

SUFFOLK DOG DAY 2023 NOTICE: We are sorry to report, due to the hot weather predicted on Sunday, we have decided to unfortunately cancel this year’s event at Helmingham Hall on Sunday 10 September.

The safety of dogs and visitors at the event is our highest priority and we have made this difficult decision in collaboration and support from our event partners at the RSPCA and Nightingale Vets. This decision has been taken early to give as much notice as possible for traders and visitors.

If you have pre-booked tickets for the event, you will have received an email in your inbox, which includes the following link to request a refund for your tickets or you can decide to donate your entry to the hospice to fund patient care: https://www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/refund-form-suffolk-dog-day/ Please complete this form by midnight on Thursday 14 September.

We wish to say a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, stallholders and supporters for their understanding. We look forward to welcoming you all at Suffolk Dog Day in 2024.

A super little activity for a for a hot day, fun for our dogs and helping a little bit to keep them cool.

Another you could try is 'apple bobbing, 'just put some chunks of apple (ensure you have removed the pips) into a large bucket or container of water, and see if they will go 'bobbing' to retrieve the apples.

All of a sudden it’s summer! 🥵 ☀️
That means a lot less activities for , she doesn’t like the heat.

I adjust our daily puzzle sessions to the weather to keep her cool too.

Good To know: when a dog is panting a lot, it is hard for them to sniff (almost impossible to do at the same time). So when you offer a puzzle that asks for a lot of sniffing it might cause the dog some troubles. The dilemma for them is: do I sniff to find my treats or do I pant to cool down?

So today I gave a ‘sight puzzle’: I put a towel in a container and added water, so the towel was just under the water level. I put some treats in the folds of the towel and Puck found them by sight and then had to put her nose in the wet towel to get them. A short puzzle session, a happy dog and a cold nose were the result ☺️

TELL ME WHEN I’M A GOOD DOG!
Taking the focus off “bad” behaviour and rewarding the “good” behaviour
Imagine this – You work for someone who continually reprimands you. You never know from one day to the next if there is anything this person is happy with, because all you get is negative feedback. You are never thanked for a job well done, never given any positive feedback, recognition or encouragement. This leaves you feeling confused, insecure and unhappy and you have no idea what this person really expects of you.
We often treat our dogs this way, only focusing or providing feedback on the “bad” behaviour and neglecting to provide feedback and encouragement for the “good” behaviour. Rewarding, reinforcing and encouraging “good” behaviour is the quickest and easiest way of changing a behaviour. Rewarding a dog for a job well done is an effective, proven, scientifically based way to bond, communicate and teach in a positive, force-free way. If a dog does something that results in something good happening, they’re more likely to repeat that behaviour.
Reinforcement or rewards don’t always have to be food – lots of praise, a favourite toy, playing a game or anything else a dog really enjoys can be reinforcing. Keep showing your dog that they’re a "good dog" and very soon they will be!

24/09/2021

I find a lot of owners are unaware of the law regarding dogs id tags, the wearing of and information required on them. Hopefully this information from dog law solicitor Trevor Cooper, whose seminars i have attended many times, will help to clarify.

At Trevor Cooper's Doglaw Seminars the law on collar & tag usually creates a bit of a stir! And now we see that it has also become a bit of a news item as well, so it's great that the dog owning public is discovering that this identification requirement is still the law. It is from the Control of Dogs Order 1992 which requires that when a dog is on a highway or a place of public resort it shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it or on a plate or badge attached to it.

Prosecutions are very rare, but we take the view that it is about the benefit of compliance rather than the detriment of enforcement. Complying means that you are increasing your chances of a lost dog being reunited with its owner.

We take the view that a harness is a form of a collar. There has never been a prosecution that we are aware of when someone has used a harness rather than a collar.

There are a few exemptions which apply (which include when a dog is being used for agility or for the driving/tending of cattle or sheep). Even if you have a long address or a long name there really is no excuse for failing to comply. We appreciate that some dog owners are reluctant to have their address displayed - all we can suggest is that if you don't like this particular requirement you should speak to your MP as it is Parliament that has the power to amend the law.
