On December 18th, 2025, Bark Nation was contacted by Detroit Animal Care and Control requesting assistance with an unfolding suspected animal cruelty situation involving 1 live and 2 deceased dogs on a property in Detroit, MI.

Bark Nation team members worked with DACC Investigators and Officers to immediately transfer all 3 dogs into Bark Nation’s care for evidentiary purposes. Upon transport to Bark Nation, Glow (now lovingly known as Keiko), the live dog, was photographed and immediately transported to an emergency veterinary hospital.

Upon examination, Glow was found to be malnourished, dehydrated, and extremely emaciated with a body condition score of 1/9 on the Purina Body Condition System. Diagnostics showed she suffered from anemia, as well as other abnormalities which are consistent with lack of nutrition and hydration.

In the care of Bark Nation, Glow is receiving continuous care, including Vitamin B injections daily, and is on a very strict refeeding protocol of carefully calculated caloric intake provided in multiple small meals daily, as a dog in her poor body condition is at high risk for refeeding syndrome.

We are thrilled to announce that, to date, Glow has gained 1.4 lbs and her anemia and other concerning lab values are continuing to improve.

As for the 2, precious, deceased dogs Salt and Pepper, (lovingly renamed Kyra and Kiyo), Bark Nation photographed the condition of their bodies and transported both to Michigan State University for necropsy services to gather information and confirm official causes of death. Both deceased dogs also appeared to have suffered from malnutrition.

The Bark Nation team would like to thank the Detroit Police Department, Detroit Animal Care and Control, and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for their quick actions in removing these animals from further danger, getting them into appropriate evidentiary care, and charging their previous owner with the crimes he is suspected of committing. We have provided preliminary information to all agencies involved and will continue to collaborate and provide updated case details in real time to authorities. Our sincere gratitude to all involved for your commitment to ending animal cruelty, and to creating a safe, humane Detroit.

The need in the freezing weather never stops.

This sweet emaciated boy now named Miles was searching for help during yesterday’s cold temperatures and wind.

Covered in demodex mange, his feet are bleeding, his fur is missing, and his is extremely uncomfortable. His temperature was low and he needed to spend time on a heating pad to bring his internal temperature up. AND he’s hw + 😩

Our team started him on medications for his skin and heartworm. He is receiving tiny meals so that we can ensure he doesn’t get ref feeding syndrome as we start to help him gain weight.  we cannot wait for this boy to have a little bit more fat on him so we can give him a much-needed medicated bath.

We say it again and again, collaboration saves lives and in this freezing weather, all hands are on deck.

Last night an amazing animal welfare advocate posted looking for help for this babe who was found while owners were searching for their lost dog.

Almost immediately our group chat with our friends at The Karen’s started pinging. Within minutes The Karen’s were on their way to get this sweet babe and we prepared a safe area for him at our shelter.

He was freezing, starving, terrified and tired. Using the kindest handling, reading body language, and moving slow, he was able to be loaded into the car and headed for our Pitness Protection shelter.

After a nice warm nights sleep, our morning team welcomed him to P2 with loving and kind hands and completed his medical intake.

This sweet boy now named Balto will be looking for placement or a foster/adopter soon. Email [email protected] if you are interested.

New kid Dreidel has a big ask!

You see, Dreidel and 11 others entered the Pitness Protection this weekend seeking reprieve from the cold (shoutout The Karens). Another kiddo is even on his way right now!

While Driedel and a few of his friends need to gain some weight slowly and become healthy before they can indulge, they heard that dogs at P2 get a peanut butter bone when they return to their kennel EVERY SINGLE MORNING!!!

The problem is…. we are out of deli sheets 😮 We can’t make peanut butter bones without deli sheets 😩

We also are going to need garbage bags because new dogs = a lot of p**p 💩

UPDATE: 3 more just in! 9 today! 12 this weekend 😲

‼️ Transfer partners and Bark Nation supporters, we need YOU‼️

This weekend was a BEAST with a capital B.

With the cold 🥶 snap approaching, animal welfare orgs, outreach volunteers and shelter workers dreaded the worst. We prepped kennels in hopes to be able to assist with the cold emergencies, and without doubt, emergencies were waiting.

Frostbitten dogs, emaciated dogs, dead dogs, dogs with no shelter, dogs caked in their f***s, live fleas still crawling, some with heartworm, some with cherry eye, all needing help.

The fact that we have to do this in the city of Detroit year after year is exhausting. It’s traumatic, it’s heart wrenching, and that is why we truly believe that collaboration saves lives. We won’t stop, because we literallty CAN’T stop. Their lives depend on us

This weekend we were able to assist with 8 emergency intakes from our friends The Karens, and an emergency intake from our friends at the The KG Foundation. In the week prior, we assisted with welcoming 9 babes needing warmth and safety from the frigid temps.

Thank you to the outreach teams knocking on doors, stuffing dog houses, handing out crates, and having life saving conversations, and refusing to leave a dog out to die in the cold. Thank you to the law enforcement officers who did show up when groups.

To our volunteers, thank you for showing up. Thank you for building kennels. Thank you for washing the fleas and f***s off. Thank you for making their beds, and for filling their waters. Thank you for knowing that while unexpected intakes can be crazy and chaotic, these dogs are alive because of you. Thank you for being so passionate about our mission.

To the partners already making room and planning to assist with these babes, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We promise better days ahead, sweet babes.
