As this arctic freeze comes to a close (thank heavens), we have welcomed three more darlings from our friends at .2021 🤍

Please welcome Butter Burger (fka Kane - the Dobie), Whopper (the American Bully), and Smooch (the Cane Corso)! 😍

Butter Burger spent two days in emergency for severe emaciation and is on strict re-feeding … and he had solid p**p today 👏🏼 Both Whopper and Smooch were found roaming alone, and are absolutely sweet as pie 🥧

Thank you all SO much for supporting us during this high intake last week - over 20 dogs found safety and reprieve in our care after being subjected to sub-freezing temperatures. From frostbite, to wounds to heartworm to emaciation to abandonment and more - we’ve fallen in love time and time and time again ❤️

Another day, another urgent intake ❤️‍🩹🥺

Friends, meet Apple Pie 🍎🥧

We were contacted by .2021 who were contacted by a driver, Autumn, regarding this emaciated, freezing girl in Detroit. We quickly said YES and The Karen’s rushed to get her and transport her to our confidential shelter.

At a mere 27lbs, tonight Apple Pie is getting life-saving warmth and little bits of gastro food. Tomorrow she will receive additional diagnostics, have her wounds clipped and cleaned, and will continue on her re-feeding journey.

Man has it been a tough couple of days. Since Friday, our team has taken in 19 dogs who may have otherwise froze to death.

Now that we can take a breath, we’d like to introduce you to some of these babes and share with you some of their exciting next steps. If you are familiar with Bark Nation, you know we always theme our groups who come in.

So without further ado, please welcome our McDonald characters!

First we’d like to introduce you to The Griddler!!

The Griddler was underweight and injured being left out in the freezing cold. The Karens were able to get him out and we became a safe place for him.

Our friends over at Shelter To Home Animal Rescue welcomed The Griddler into their rescue and his new foster Rose picked him up and they went right to the vet. We fell in love with this boy instantly, so we selfishly could have kept him forever 🥹

💔 Another absolutely frigid day
💔 Another day of shivering dogs
💔 Another day of ice, wind and cold
💔Another day of absolute heartbreak

When our phone rang today and we saw the name, we knew not picking up was not an option. The Karens needed a safe landing place for another freezing dog needing reprieve from the arctic weather. This guy needs medical attention and is starved for attention, warmth and a good meal. We got you, little guy 💚
Welcome to P2

This sweet boy is joining our McDonald’s themed babes this week and is now named The Griddler. We will be getting to know this babe and then working with our partners to find him a forever home.

They will get frostbite. There is no excuse for a dog to be outside with dangerous temperatures. We are proud to be able to help our friends and colleagues. We also have to shout out our amazing transfer partners this week who are trying to take dogs where they can in order to allow us to have open kennels for emergencies.

While our shelter is reserved for cases assisting law enforcement, we had some open kennels during these sub-freezing days. And we wanted to do SOMETHING to assist our friends (heroes) in outreach braving the cold temps to provide life-saving care to outdoor dogs. We wanted to be able to say ‘yes’ when they, and the dogs, needed us the most.

From terrified strays in abandoned buildings to preventing a silly bulldog-thing from being put outside, to owner surrenders, tiny neonates, and one that came to us lifeless. From refeeding schedules to wound care to heartworm treatment and around the clock tube feeding.

2 days.
5 adults.
3 juveniles.
7 neonates - 1 died in transport, 2 receiving supportive care, 4 are warming up with mom.

It’s great to meet you, 15 friends. Thank you for trusting us. Here’s to warm days and nights, yummy meals, peanut butter bones and the kindest human besties.

🍔 Biggie B literally keeps our volunteers and staff entertained every single day.

Thanks to YOU, Buford was able to undergo his second surgery. His favorite vet was able to remove the necrotic tissue, remove his drains, do a bit more stitching up (the cartilage on those ear tips…. well the tips that are left, is extremely damaged), and while he was under anesthesia - he got neutered 🎉

Big B got to have a sleepover at his Auntie Lisa’s after surgery where she learned he loved watching basketball, loves looking outside, and snores like a freight train.

We cannot wait for this boy to be ready for his forever home.

Bummer news, besties 😕

Even his lucky lion cone didn’t bring the outcome we had hoped for with Big Buford’s skin 🥺🦁

Our little big man went back to AEC for a re-check, and parts of his skin became necrotic, which we knew was a strong possibility. Biggie B will be going back under sedation to have necrotic tissue removed on the top of his head and ears, which has to be done carefully with his advanced heart murmur.

Please send all of the love you can muster! Continued donations are so, so needed and appreciated as well, if you’re able! Our little crusty lion is the sweetest, bravest boy, and has suffered immensely in his life.

These fake accounts have already stolen funds from unsuspecting donors intended for Big Buford 💥😤🤬😠💥 Funds that could have gone toward his recovery and the care he so desperately needs... ❤️‍🩹

Here’s what’s happening: When you search for us on Venmo, two fake accounts (barknationn and barknation_) seem to pop up before our official Venmo account: barknation (see pictures 2 & 3).

Here’s how you can help:

2️⃣ Report the impostors!
- Go to the fake barknationn and barknation_ on Venmo.
- Tap the 3 dots in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Report and follow the prompts it takes you to on PayPal.
3️⃣ Block the fakes! This ensures they won’t pop up again when you’re searching for us.

🤕🙏ANOTHER Big Buford Update!🙏❤️

Our little big man made it through surgery last night ... and when we say surgery, we’re talking 4.5 HOURS!

The incredible veterinarian that dedicated so much time and love to Big B relayed the following about his health status:
▪️It was an incredibly long surgery
▪️His skull was exposed at at least one point of trauma
▪️There is cartilage tearing to his already cropped ears
▪️The amount of infection was horrific and seemed never ending
▪️He has drains and sutures
▪️He has little to no tear production in his eyes

NOW! We’re not out of the woods. Due to the incredible amount of damage, including connective tissue being torn away from Big Buford’s skull, the next 72 hours are CRITICAL to see if portions of his skin will live or become necrotic.

Big Buford is currently being weaned off of fentanyl and is on a slew of antibiotics and other treatments. It is possible we will get to bring him home tonight!

❤️‍🩹BIG BUFORD UPDATE❤️‍🩹

Well, in pure Bark Nation pup fashion, this may not be an easy road to recovery for our sweet boy. Big B just got evaluated and here’s what we know: he has a very bad heart murmur, to the point where the emergency veterinary team has to make alternate arrangements for fluids and potential sedation.

They are currently running all diagnostics - heartworm tests, labs, etc to attempt to determine the cause of his advanced heart murmur and his overall stability.

Infection and pain are a given - so antibiotics and pain meds are being administered.

There is no way of knowing the extent of the trauma or damage without sedation at this point, so we are at a standstill until diagnostics come back.

✨The current estimate to save Big Buford is just north of $3,500 through tomorrow!

🙏🥺 ON HIS WAY TO EMERGENCY 🤍🙏

We were contacted by The Karens who came across this incredibly injured and infected boy when they were out doing outreach today in the subfreezing weather. Doing what they do best, they refused to leave without him and secured an owner surrender.

[Remember! Surrender does NOT mean authorities cannot investigate and charge. We will of course document his case thoroughly. But first things first, get the babe to safety.]

This little big dude was allegedly attacked by a stray dog daysssssss ago and has not received treatment. His entire head is massively swollen and riddled with infection, he’s lethargic and painful, was chained in the subfreezing temps without food or water, and is matted with mud. Our vet team took one look and said “get that boy to emergency!” So, we are!

We have NO idea how bad his injuries and infection are, or what it will take to hopefully save him. As soon as we have an update, you will, too … we promise!

Our best hospice boy Malcolm is on cloud 9 with all of the amazing kongs from his besties at 😍

Fun fact - we had the best “problem” of having extra shelters jump on our initiative last November, so we didn’t get to replenish kongs at our shelter. Now our babes are all set with new life-saving enrichment items for 2025!

💔UPDATE💔
After bloodwork, X-Rays and diagnostics, it’s confirmed that Rocko’s sweet body is riddled with cancer. His family has been contacted and are devastated. Dog Aide volunteers are still with him, and our Jenna + Abbie are heading there with a cheeseburger to be with him in his final moments.

‼️HAPPENING NOW‼️ 🙏 Donations Needed!🙏

We were contacted this evening by Dog Aide regarding an 8 year old, owned, emaciated, nearly non-ambulatory Rottweiler that was in immediate need of help so that he did not die in the elements. This boy has been suffering for days, and while there are more details, our ability to come together to act is critical to trying to save this boys life!

What we know:
💔 he can barely stand/walk, and has been unable to for days.
💔 he is emaciated
💔 he’s in a great deal of pain

Dog Aide obtained an owner surrender and are at an emergency veterinary hospital with him where we will cover cost of care and welcome him into our program.
