📣 What is the difference between blending scissors and thinning scissors?

Thinning scissors and blending scissors do look physically similar however, these two types of scissors can cause a little confusion and their names are used incorrectly!

When choosing between these two types of scissors, it is advised that the groomer must consider the coat type they will be working on and the finish they are looking to achieve.

✂️ A thinning scissor is a workhorse style of scissor, is used to 'thin' or ‘remove bulk’ from the coat and is used at the prep stage of the groom.

✂️ A blending scissor is designed to be a finishing scissor and is used to create a softer and smoother finish.

It is important for you to understand the differences between a blending scissor and a thinning scissor as they perform different grooming tasks and will leave different looks on the dog's coat.

📣Groomers Top Tip! Keep your scissors sharp to enhance their performance and extend their lifespan!

Sharpening your scissors on time will make a big difference in their performance and longevity.

There are good practices which by following will help to maintain and preserve all of your scissors.

These good practices are;

🪛 Hold your scissors correctly. Use ONLY the tip of your thumb!

🧼 Clean your scissors after you have used them.

✂️Make sure all the parts of your scissors are completely dry.

🧴Oil your scissors once a week after you have cleaned and dried them.

🪛 Regularly check and adjust if necessary, the scissor's tension.

📤 Store your scissors safely and ideally away from the salon environment.

👩‍🔧Have each scissor sharpened as soon as it starts to feel dull.

‼️WHAT ARE THE SIGNS YOUR SCISSORS NEED SHARPENING?

When a pair of your scissors are ready to be sharpened, there will be signs!

If, after checking that the scissor's tension is correct, any of the following problems listed below start to occur, this may indicate that your scissors are tired and need some tlc from your sharpener;

✂️The blades feel like they are pulling or grabbing the dog's coat and not cutting. The coat feels like it is sticking to the blades.

✂️The dog's coat bends rather than cuts as the scissor's blades are closing.

✂️ You feel like you’re having to apply more pressure from your thumb or fingers to get the blades to cut.

✂️ The blades do not cut at all.

✂️ The scissors feel like they are unbalanced.

✂️ Your fingers and hands start to feel tired and sore quicker than normal.

✂️ How to oil your grooming scissors correctly.

After cleaning and ensuring the scissors are dry, it is recommended that you oil each pair of scissors.

Oiling all your scissors assists;

✅ the cleaning process by pushing any remaining dirt, debris and hair from under the pivot (tension screws).

✅ lt leaves a small layer of protection within the tension system and helps to keep it rotating correctly.

✅ It keeps the scissors rust free and lubricanted.

🪛 HOW TO FIX YOUR SCISSOR IF THE TENSION SCREW FALLS OUT!

If your scissors feel a bit too loose, it's important to adjust them right away! If not, you might find some or all of the tension system parts pop out.

In case that happens, make sure you gather all the components and put them back together in the correct order.

Remember, getting the order right is key—otherwise, the tension and blades might get damaged.
