The annual KIENO conference is a wonderful free event with SO MUCH GOOD INFO on raising dogs! If you only attend one free conference this year, this should be the one!

Here's a teeny bit about some of my favourite presenters on the lineup this year...

Andy Hale: this man is incredible. Probably my #1 idol in the dog behaviour world. His focus is very much on the dog's emotional experience. You'll definitely have some WOW! moments listening to him.

Simone Mueller: Simone has revolutionized the way we work with prey-drive behaviours. She also has a fabulous approach for dogs that scavenge on walks. I'm sure she'll have some excellent practical advice on one of these subjects and if I were to guess, you'll also likely learn a bit about functional rewards from her.

Mari Valgma: I'm a little bit obsessed with her movement puzzles right now! They are amazing for building confidence!

Jack Fenton: Jack talks a lot about how scent work can help out "fizzy" dogs. You'll love him... 1000% (

I am so proud of this fella! We've been working hard on cooperative care as Brom has a history of being scared at the vet. Both the amazing tech and the incredible vet commented on how far he's come since his last appointment! This super pup aced his exam AND his vaccines AND the dreaded stethoscope (that's one of the toughest pieces of equipment for him!)
Your vet visits can become a piece of cake too! Join us in January for our next Cooperative Care course! Space is limited - don't miss out! https://www.dogwittraining.com/cooperative-care.html

Are vet visits stressful for your dog? Are they stressful for you?

So many vet clinics work hard to provide positive and stress-free experiences for their clients. Despite their best efforts, some dogs find clinics and procedures to be pretty spooky.

Enter "Cooperative Care"! Investing the time to help your dog become more comfortable with husbandry and grooming procedures is something you'll NEVER regret. Let us help you reach your goals and start to experience low-stress handling!

Oh these shoes. đŸ€Ž I have so many memories around Diego’s “sneakers”, I keep them on my office shelf like other folks keep baby booties. One thing they remind me of is how brilliant Diego was with his grooming and husbandry care. It wasn’t always that way though; we practiced and learned together. He learned to not only trust that the procedure would be ok, he also learned to trust those doing it. Putting on boots to protect the tops of his toes as he walked, cleaning him if he had an accident. Even helping him when his more sensitive parts would get stuck outside his sheath. Accepting chiropractic treatments, physiotherapy treatments, and being fitted for a wheelchair. Having a growth removed from his front leg without sedation. All of these things that I had no idea would be needed; but boy am I glad we trained for them and worked on them all throughout his life. Now I’m on the Cooperative Care journey with Brom. Preparing for whatever future lies ahead for us. Doing everything I can to ensure his care will be as low-stress as possible. This type of training is often forgotten about; it’s not flashy, you don’t earn a ribbon for having a successful blood draw. But let me tell you this: you will NEVER regret working on this with your dog. I hope you’ll join us on November 28th for our Cooperative Care program, you’ll be happy you did! https://www.dogwittraining.com/cooperative-care.html

Just a few weeks until our Cooperative Care program begins? So, what is Cooperative Care anyway?

Cooperative Care is all about being in partnership with our dogs, working toward willingness and comfort with grooming and veterinary care. If you've ever watched videos of zoo animals willingly giving a paw or hoof for care, or pressing their shoulder up against the pen for a blood draw, this is all done through cooperative care techniques.

How would your life be different if your dog was comfortable with their grooming or veterinary care? How would their well-being improve if they weren't afraid or unwilling to participate?

Cooperative Care, my friends, is a game changer.

Register for our November course here: https://www.dogwittraining.com/cooperative-care.html

Brom Bones has very sensitive paws and isn’t comfortable with them being handled. This can make nail trims a challenging feat! (Er
feet? Ha! I crack me up.) A scratch board allows us to keep his nails trimmed and tidy and it is completely cooperative. This is a great option while we work on building his comfort and willingness to have his paws handled.

Is your dog like Brom Bones? In our Cooperative Care program beginning on November 28th, you’ll learn all about creating paw handling comfort, nail trims, how to make a scratch board, and how to teach your dog to use it.

Space is limited, register at https://www.dogwittraining.com/cooperative-care.html

VET FRIENDS! We're making our way around the city supplying clinics with our Cooperative Care poster for your exam rooms. This poster has some tips that your clients can apply in the moment while they're waiting, as well as some ideas to make future vet visits less stressful. There are a lot of clinics in Calgary, so if you'd like me to bump you to the top of the list for delivery just let me know! Clinics can also host a Cooperative Care class for your own clients!

Groomer friends, would a poster like this be helpful for your grooming salon? Let me know and we'll get something made up for you!

Does your dog have separation anxiety? Do you know FOR SURE? Often separation anxiety goes unnoticed because the distress is happening when we are not home to witness it. While some dogs have symptoms like chewing or having accidents, other dogs express their anxiety through vocalizations... vocalizations that stop when you get home so you may not even know!

I recommend that EVERY home should watch their dog on camera to determine their comfort level. Check in on your dog. See how they are coping. If they seem stressed, get help from a certified separation anxiety consultant right away.

Our November program start dates have been posted, we're here to help! https://www.dogwittraining.com/separation-anxiety.html

Have you seen our new program? Specializing in "sensitive" dogs, bringing in a cooperative care program fits us perfectly!

What is cooperative care? It's all about building a trusting partnership with your dog during grooming and husbandry practices. It gives your dog the choice to participate in care practices, and choice is a very powerful thing indeed! If you've ever wondered how zoo animals are taught to willingly offer a leg for blood draws, it's through cooperative care work!

While being a wonderful compliment to our sensitive dogs' needs, this program was also born from my own need! My previous dog, Diego, was brilliant with his care needs. He went blind at just 2 years of age and we had to teach him many care techniques at that time. Even in his later years, we were able to surgically remove a growth with only local anesthetic - no sedation required! Brom Bones, the latest edition to the Dogwit family isn't near as comfortable with care and handling techniques... this boy will tuck and run from anything that looks suspicious. Cotton ball? I'm out of here! Stethoscope? No-thank-you-scope. Toothpaste tube? Terrifying... but can I have a lick?

If your dog struggles with grooming or has a rough go at the vet, this 6-week program will be a huge help!

The first round of our cooperative care class begins November 28th! And, like all of our programs, you'll have support every step of the way as we track your dog's cooperative care journey!

Have you ever noticed the frame in my background during your classes or training sessions? It shows the current Employee of the Month and (you guessed it) it's always Brom Bones.
Do you think I should announce the Employee of the Month every month?

05/10/2023

After months of preparation, I'm happy to announce our new program! Join us to build a wonderful partnership with your dog during their grooming and husbandry sessions! Our new Cooperative Care program shows you how to include your dog as a willing participant and partner in all of your handling practices. Over 6 weeks you'll work together to build comfort and cooperation with touches, restraint, grooming tools, and vet tools!

This program is perfect for your new puppy, your new-to-you dog, and for dogs of all ages who struggle with grooming and husbandry tasks.

Classes begin November 7th! Register here: https://www.dogwittraining.com/cooperative-care.html

We've all had plenty of unhelpful comments when we've told people our dogs are struggling with separation anxiety, but what would be a better alternative? 😕

Here are a few helpful replies if someone tells you their dog is struggling with separation anxiety: đŸ¶

"Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help!" - Even puppy sitting for an hour or two can provide a stress-free outing for a dog guardian. đŸŸ

"Your dog is always welcome!" - Arranging social events at dog-friendly venues can mean a dog guardian isn't missing out on much-needed time with family and friends.

"That sounds really tough. So sorry he's struggling!" - Having a dog with separation anxiety can make a person feel completely isolated. Sometimes it feels like you get cut off from the rest of the world. Having someone simply empathize and be a listening ear can go a long way. đŸ•đŸ€—

"You hit 1 minute! That's Awesome!" - Share the wins! Celebrate them even if they seem trivial to you. Be your friend's biggest cheerleader. 🎉
