Jackie Davies(the Bush Chook), our little stray girl from Coburg who came in on Sunday, still had not had a dustbath by this afternoon, despite being offered several different options! So as she smelled so bad, I thought a bath would be nice. I had seen bald areas over her body, but being wet showed up significant bruising on those areas, her crop and legs. She seemed to enjoy the bath and subsequent blow dry. We had a cuddle afterwards to towel her off and attempted some selfies. Jack is much more photogenic than me!
Redlegs is extremely jealous of her and wants to eat everything she has. Poor Jack has copped a few headpecks from the angry Redlegs! Jack is the sweetest girl, doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She runs up to me already when she sees me coming. (Treat induced admiration of course) and yells out when she hears my voice. She is such a beautiful, trusting girl, how could anyone abuse her, which is very apparent has happened in her previous life. Another sad victim of keeping backyard hens.

Yesterday was soooo hot! Our 4 crazy older girls, who had a choice of cool spaces to go, spent most of it in a plastic hutch thats set into the shed wall, with not so much as a ruffled feather! They did pop out for watermelon and other cool snacks now and then. Our little guest Jackie, a stray who came into care on Sunday, spent the day in a damp dustbath under an umbrella, with a buffet to choose from. The 3 babies, Redlegs, Twistie and Blackie, spent the day inside from 10am. They do not cope with temperatures above 30 at all. They had fun trashing the joint! I myself, was a hot sweaty mess, running inside and out, making sure everyone was okay and had enough snacks all day long.

Meet Jackie Davies. Jackie was found wandering as a stray in Coburg on Sunday, and was kindly taken in by Kiya and her housemates, who looked after her until I could go and pick her up. She is another victim of abused backyard hens, skinny, just 1.5kgs, smelly and scrappy, dirty feathers. She has wire rub on her neck as though she's been caged. Her eggs are wrinkled and thin. She was more than likely dumped because of this. She is very quiet and moves slowly, which could indicate pain. She is such a sweet little girl. Loves butter lettuce, bok choy, watermelon, corn, mash and grains. She's on pain medication and a 3 day course of calcium injections to help with her issues. She spent today in a damp dustbath eating from a buffet selection. The lovely girls who rescued her from wandering in the street, named her Jackie Davies, because that night they were off to a gig to see Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks, so thought it was very fitting.

In early November, we took in another 12 rescued grower shed girls. 4 of these girls (first photo is at MCR just before the trip to their new home) were adopted by the lovely Brenda, who is absolutely besotted with them. I met Brenda when she joined our Guardian Transport Network driver team, to help pick up and deliver rescued chickens to their new homes. Brenda also does transport assistance for .

The 4 girls are Dora, Bonnie, Emily and Rosie. They are living the life in their safe, fully enclosed run. They have a lovely new coop, lots of enrichment such as peastraw bales, mirrors, greens, corn, mealworms, a dustbath and roofs to perch on and shadecloth and a shadesail for weatherproofing. They also enjoy their time out with Brenda in her veggie garden, helping her keep the bugs down. Today was the first day they were allowed to venture right out onto the rest of the property, under strict supervision. They had so much fun and with a shake of the mealworms container, were happy to go back to the coop when asked.
This is Brendas first time as a carer for chickens and its lovely to see how invested she is, in giving them a life worth living. She did a lot of online research beforehand and armed herself with info needed to be a wonderful carer. They get so many treats and are so utterly loved, it's beautiful to see the bond forming.

Kayla in Ashburton is looking for a safe and loving home for 2 chickens brought home from her sons kinder school hatching program. One hen, one rooster. They are currently living on the balcony of her apartment and she has now realised that this is no life for them. 😔 Why would the kinder even let them go to live in a totally unsuitable home? Oh, that's right, because once they have no use for them, they just want to get rid of them, as with all school hatching projects.
If you can offer them a safe new home, please PM the page and we'll get some contact details for you.

A 'novel and fun' way.....just awful. This actually makes me sick, making fun of poor tortured chickens. Won't be supporting this company ever again. 😡😡 I'm so sick of the disrespect shown to chickens in every way.

Redlegs took an opportunity to use the big girls dustbath during her evening wander today. Blackie and Twistie did the same, even though they all have their own, exactly the same! In the evening the older girls always come up to the house, so I let the 3 'babies' have the run of the whole area down the back. The first thing they do is jump in the dustbath! Redlegs was worried about Blackie today and came and told me she couldn't find her. I told her she was off laying an egg. The older 4 hens had a lovely time beating out some tunes today too!

The perks of helping out at a rescued chicken sanctuary, is being up close and personal to all kinds of chickens, including this magnificent specimen of rooster, Sparticus. He has been living there since being taken in as a motherless orphan at just a few days old. While I was cleaning up in one area, Vince, a gorgeous tiny seabright bantam rooster, rushed at me to attack me. Roger Ramjet, a very handsome Hamburg rooster, who I saved from death several years ago, and who has also been lucky enough to call Lefty's home since then, rushed up to Vince and shooed him away from me. I felt very honoured that Roger wanted to protect me! Half an hour later I heard a flurry behind me and felt some sharp stabs in the backs of my legs and sure enough Vince had snuck up from behind to attack me, to show me who's boss! Follow Lefty's Place Farm Sanctuary to read all their stories! 🐓💜

Chickens, like all animals, feel the same emotions as we do. 😔

Grief

Be you a human, a dog, a sheep, a cow or a chicken - grief comes to us all. There is no difference regardless of species how loss affects us.

Mrs Mangle just lost her best friend, Tontine, and her heart is broken. Whilst she was alive, they were a team, a team of disabled Isa Browns whose legs just didn’t work, but who loved each other dearly. They chatted to each other all day and Mrs Mangle would gently ask Tontine to groom her with all the patience in the world.

When Tontine died on Tuesday, I left her body with Mrs Mangle for a while. Mrs stood and stared in to her face for the longest time. She then refused to eat for two days and stayed in her bed.

When we buried Tontine, there was a change in Mrs Mangle, like she finally understood. I showed her what was happening and from then on, she began to eat again.

Shes still not quite herself, but I believe chickens understand more about death than we ever could.

*I never take photos of my dead animals bodies, but this is the exception to portray the depth of loss and feeling a chicken can experience.

We're so sorry for the loss of Tontine. The bravest little girl. 💔💜❤️

Tontine

Tontiney arrived in early January. Unable to walk, she was found in a suburb of Melbourne dumped in a front yard. All she could do was sit there, unable to move to protect herself. She must have been so scared. Tontine's hocks were huge, her legs had been rendered unusable due to rickets. It was obvious she had been hatched and raised in someone's backyard with no access to sunlight or proper nutrition. A kind heart saw her in that front yard and picked her up and went door knocking. "Is this your chicken" the woman asked after she'd knocked on the door of a gruff older man. He grabbed Tontine out of the lovely woman's arms and threw Tontine over his side fence. Tontine suffered a fracture due to this. Not only did she have to suffer from her preventable rickets, her heart disease but also a fracture from a man who didn't have to inflict that on a sweet bird.

Tontiney made her way to me and I'm so glad she did. A more delightfully sweet little girl I don't think I've ever known. She learnt her name and would chirp back at me every single time. She took great joy in talking to me, talking to her best friend Mrs Mangle, in bio-cheese snacks, in dust bathes, in sunshine, in her regular sushi handroll treat and in being comfortable.

Tontine died on Tuesday. I knew it was coming as her heart was so incredibly bad. I was preparing myself to have her put to sleep very soon, but she decided to go out on her own. She ate her last sushi roll with such joy - her little eyes lit up and she chatted to me with her enthusiasm and thanks in the sweet way she always did, and not long after her heart gave out and she died. My days are different now without her sparks of joy and her beaming little face looking up at me with pure trust and love, but it's not me who is feeling the tidal wave of grief, it's her best friend Mrs Mangle who has been hit with loss in the saddest of ways. She didn't eat for days and barely left her bed. As time goes on, Mrs Mangle will recover, her bond with that sweet hen was so special.

It wasn't a long life but at least it was a life full of love, friendship and favourite snacks. Life can be so hard for the sweetest of souls and Tontine's life really wasn't easy or fair, but she lived every day with such gratitude and joy that I will forever remember her positivity and will remind myself to model myself off her beautiful spirit. Darling little girl, may you now be able to walk wherever you want to go.

Poor little Blackie laid her first egg yesterday. 😔 She was a bit stunned afterwards and like Redlegs, was quite exhausted. She had a smorgasbord afterwards and they all really liked the butter lettuce I bought for them. Its nice and soft to tear. They had another go at it later on and eventually just left the stump. They do love their greens. 🫛🥦🥬
