We are only a few weeks away from the 4th of July which means now is the time to start planning ahead for your pets who don't like the loud noises of neighborhood firework displays. If your pet displays behaviors such as pacing, panting, howling, whining, hiding, or trembling, you might want to discuss with our veterinarians different potential coping mechanisms including anxiety control medication. Don't wait until July 3rd to call us!

A frequently misunderstood animal, check it out. Have you ever seen a Fisher?

SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT FISHERS!

There is so much misinformation floating around about these guys, so we thought we would set the record straight!

Fishers belong to the weasel family. Technically, they are just called “Fishers” not “Fisher cats”. They are amazing hunters equipped with large paws, sharp claws and an impressive set of teeth.

They don’t get very large. Males tend to be between 8-16 pounds. Females are significantly smaller, weighing only 4-6 pounds. The largest fisher ever recorded weighed 20 lbs.

Many people will tell you they have blood curdling screams but, more likely than not, what they are hearing are foxes. Fishers are generally very quiet and, when they are vocal, it’s not quite as intense as the sounds foxes make.

We are often warned that they eat people’s cats. A study done in New Hampshire in 1979 tested the stomach contents of 1000 fishers. Only one tested positive for cat hair. Similar studies were done in New York and Massachusetts as well. Both of those studies did not find any trace of cats. That’s not to say they will not prey on cats. They certainly can but it’s not as common as many would think. Considering outdoor domestic cats have contributed to the extinction of over 60 songbird species, as well as some mammals and reptiles, the real concern when letting a cat outside should be the damage the cat will do to the wildlife - not the other way around. Cats are not indigenous to this area. What they do to our wildlife is not what nature intended.

Fishers are one of the only predators that hunt porcupines. They have developed techniques to avoid the quills. Though we LOVE porcupines here at the rescue, we respect Mother Nature and understand that every creature does what is necessary to survive out there.

Fishers can be very aggressive but attacks on humans are VERY RARE and generally only when provoked.

Fishers are hunted for their pelts (fur). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fishers were virtually eliminated from the United States due to over trapping and deforestation. Restrictions helped their numbers to bounce back.

It’s uncommon to see one. They are elusive creatures. Though sometimes they are out during the day, they are mostly active at dawn and dusk. Most of the pictures you will find online will show them looking very mean and aggressive. These photos obviously get lots of attention. Though, these guys can certainly be aggressive at times, there is a lot more to them. That’s why it was important to me to circulate this photo.

They are magnificent creatures and probably one of the most misunderstood ones.

The Brewster Dog Park is nearing completion! (Late May 2022). Awesome progress under the leadership and direction of the Brewster DPW. The dog and human fountains need to be installed, the water and play features installed, the gravel surface inside the walkway and mulch outside. Final top coat on all asphalt paths and roadways. We need benches, signage, waste stations, storage shed and plantings installed and voila, you have a state of the art dog park.

Volunteer Stewards are needed to help run the dog park and your tax deductible donation are always welcome!

What a remarkable story! Just incredible

Through sickness and health...here is your feel good story of the day 😁

Today was a first for our Cape hospital. We often have people ask if they can visit the patients they dropped off, but today we had our first animal visitor! For the safety of our patients we do not accommodate visitation requests, but in this case we had to make an exception!

This Canada goose, we refer to as Arnold, lives on a pond near our facility. He is part of a mated pair that have been together for several years. They are totally wild and usually keep to themselves when people are around, but yesterday our staff noticed that Arnold had developed a significant limp and was continuously falling over. With some effort we were able to catch Arnold and bring him in for a veterinary exam, one of the "perks" of having a wildlife hospital in your backyard. Upon exam our veterinary team found that he had two open-fractures on his foot. This means that the tissue and skin has been pulled away leaving the bone exposed. Our best guess is that a Snapping turtle or other predator attacked him while swimming. In order to save the foot, and give him a chance at survival, we knew we had to perform surgery to amputate one of the digits and suture the other wound closed. We gave Arnold antibiotics and pain medications and fasted him for surgery the next morning.

Today, as we prepared to sedate Arnold and get him ready for surgery, we heard a faint tapping at the clinic door. We turned to see that his mate had waddled up onto the porch and was attempting to break into our clinic! She had somehow located him and was agitated that she could not get inside. She remained at the door throughout the entire procedure, watching us work, never moving from the doorway.

Thankfully the surgery went well and we expect the foot to heal with continued treatment and time. Once Arnold woke from anesthesia and the wound was closed and bandaged, we decided to let him recover by the doorway so that he could see his mate. We opened the door and gave Arnold his flow-by oxygen in the doorway. His mate immediately calmed down and began to groom him through the door. They both seemed much more at ease in each other's presence.

Arnold will likely need several weeks of treatment in our hospital before he is ready to rejoin his mate in the wild. He will need to be kept inside for the majority of this time in order to keep his wound sterile and prevent infection. We will do our best to get him back out quickly and will perform bandage changes and treatments in view of the doorway when possible so that his mate can check up on him ❤️

It really doesn’t matter if your dog is friendly or not.

What matters is that you don’t take the choice away from another owner (and their dog) as to who they interact with.

There can be so many reasons why a dog and their owner need space from you and your dog.

Please allow them that choice 💙
