Mixed emotions and a hard day.

Ryder got his wings . Never one for much nonsense Ryder let us know that it was his time to fly. Dr. White said that he had a massive brain bleed/stroke and there was no even glint of recovering even after fluids and meds. He was completely non responsive and we are comforted by the fact that he is no longer struggling. We know that he was in severe pain right after it happened. Sometimes saying goodbye or as I like to think of it “see you later” is the last most loving thing that you can do for your friend.

I will do a proper celebration of life post for him after we get him buried at our home, the only home that he ever knew and the one that he loved. A home where he lived and ruled, at least in his mind. He was very much loved and respected. In fact Ryder taught us a lot about mutual respect in his ten plus years with us. Life will certainly be different without his antics and presence.

On a happier note Dexter is going home with us for the night. He’s still in some stage of recovery from his seizure and his condition I would say is somewhat stable. I’m so thankful that we went to see him as Dr White and staff were shocked to see him responding to us. He had been on his side most of the day not looking great. We will watch him tonight and hopefully he will rest some so that his mind and body can start to recover. Tomorrow he will be back at the vet for whatever treatment is needed.

I’m so thankful that Dexter is doing better but my heart is broken over Ryder Spider. In rescue death is part of the gig but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Please continue to pray for all of us and send some extra love Dexter’s way.

Hug your babies tight.

Everyone we need your prayers this morning….

We have two very critical cases. First our old man Ryder has possibly had a stroke. He’s been at Tidmore Vet since Monday… on fluids and meds. His labwork panel results were not good and Ryder is older and in his younger years was a force to be reckoned with. Now he appears to be blind and was turning in circles before he went to the vet. Ryder loves following his Dad on the four wheeler and when he didn’t even lift his head late Sunday to join him, we both knew something was wrong. Ryder is a sanctuary resident having been adopted and returned several times in his younger years and is very much loved. I will post an update on him when I hear.

And my heart is shattered…”my” sweet shadow Dexter is having seizures and as of this morning his condition worsened. He was not right last night but was walking and drinking water and even helped me in the garden even though he was wobbly at times. Later he started to have a mild seizure but continued to try to drink water but this morning he took a downturn.
Dexter is one of my favorites, he follows me every step that I make and he and I bonded immediately upon his arrival. I’m concerned that this neurological issue may explain his inability to gain weight (that and running and playing all day). It was horrifying to see him struggling. Life has already been so hard on him, I was determined to make it right and I can’t wait to get him “home” where he belongs. I am so thankful I spent extra time with him
Sunday evening and he loved every minute of it. The last picture was as we were getting in from our walk late Sunday and as usual he was near me looking me straight in the eye, he is so loved. Will post update as soon as possible.

Please send prayers and good vibes their way, they need them and we do too.

Afternoon fun..so how many aquatic turtles do you all see in this picture?

Sliders are treated like disposable tissues by so many people. They buy them relatively cheap, toss them into a small aquarium and then they either die from neglect or if they are lucky, they get released. This release can ultimately upset the natural balance in an area IF the turtle survives. While they are interesting delightful creatures they are messy, stinky and need a large area so they can swim and bask.

Whatever pet you choose … research and setup first before you buy!

And for tortoises and turtles please buy one as they are mostly solitary and don’t need nor desire companionship. These kiddos are spending their last summer together as they can maim and/or kill each other as they mature. We are already making plans for their winter housing and spring .

So next summer we will be moving them to their own 110 gallon tank and the largest two (Pokey and Bully who are not shown - kept separate now as it would be an instant problem with two males) will be stepping up to a 200 gallon each which means new tank, new filter, new aeration source and heater, not cheap.

Happy Tuesday from the happiest boy around Bartholomew!

His new haircut has so changed him…I’ve heard that hair can hold trauma for people and I’m now believing it can for dogs too as he’s so different. In his case it’s made him more confident and he knows he’s handsome strutting around with his “at home” hairdo. I know he would prefer me grooming him even if he looks a little out of sorts. And he’s more comfortable as the mats were impossible to keep combed out with our lifestyle of being active outside so much. A short hairdo is definitely more suitable than long locks. And Bart has never met a mud puddle or a patch of anything gross or stinky to roll in that he didn’t like! Now baths are fast and easy and a quick towel dry and he’s good to go.

I want to add that if you have a pup that is anxious like Bart … try grooming them at home and work into a routine. Your home made “do” may not look the best but if it gets them accustomed to a bath, blow drying, sound, smell and sensation of clippers and also standing on a table then it’s a great start. Then you can work towards professional grooming if you so choose.

Please send a prayer that his neuter surgery goes well. It’s the next step in his path and we knowingly waited longer in his case than normal due to his rough start but his rescue journey is a marathon not a sprint. And most importantly spay and neuter your pets.. be a part of the solution.

Monday …. Evelyn is super pumped about this day! Maybe that’s a slight exaggeration.

After a very hot weekend, working outside some both days (and overheating Saturday) I’m looking forward to a day inside the office. Evelyn on the other hand will continue her three day streak of resting in the big bed all day (since I couldn’t bring myself to move her this morning).

Happy Saturday !

It’s a scorcher but the rescue work must go on.

Today I groomed Bart for the first “real” time. In the past I just touched up the necessities but never did a full grooming on him. I started trying to leave his coat longer but I had some mats to work around so I gave up and shaved him close. I dreaded it as he’s a wild child. But I underestimated him. He was amazing. In fact at one point he placed his long leg and foot in my lap for me to work on him.

Bart had a horrible start in life. As a puppy he was left for dead on a construction pile suffering from a heat stroke. He was picked up by animal control and taken to the shelter. They thought he was dead but immediately started to cool him down in water and before long he stood up. That horror had left him leery of most people but he’s come a long way. And it made a lot of milestones delayed for him but he made it. Praying his neuter surgery goes well Tuesday.

In fact he’s being considered for a service dog program and we are going to do everything possible to help him reach this goal.

After grooming him I believe he’s a standard poodle … we had thought doodle but after removing those long black locks I believe we uncovered a poodle.

Excuse my grooming job I do the best that I can but here’s our handsome boy, Bartholomew. Tomorrow I’ll trim him some more and take his goatee off and see what I can do with his bushy tail that he carries so high after his haircut but we both got tired so we stopped and it’s thundering so we pray it rains!!

Happy Friday !

Got tag teamed by these two this morning… what a great way to start the day!

We are finally to the point that the kittens are actually starting to like us a bit as we have been medicating them since day 1 so they associated us with yucky tasting antibiotics, eye salve and nose drops. Now we are at least a little more fun!

These kittens are accustomed to children and now dogs and are loving and sweet. They have received their first vaccination and two dewormings so they are definitely headed in the right direction. Their future is looking very bright!

They are available to go home now and we will coordinate with you on the remainder of their vetting. Their adoption fee is $100 (per kitten) and that is a bargain for all of the vetting that they will receive.

Zin aka Zin is the gray/white male kitten and Periwinkle aka Peri is the black white tuxedo kitten.

Please share!

Reminder! A completed and returned application is how a dog or cat is reserved. An inquiry alone will not reserve the adoptable.

If that’s not a “look at me Mom, don’t miss me being a good boy look “ I don’t know what is.

I share these pics for a couple of reasons .. first, they make me smile and make me a proud pup mom but most importantly to show what we feel is important dog to dog training. Small dogs and big dogs, young dogs and older dogs must learn to peacefully interact for not only their time here but for the rest of their lives.

Thankfully Forge has patience but he also is correcting them without a human trying to clumsily intervene. Charlie Bear ended up getting a brief low growl and he got out of his face. That’s what we wanted to see … Forge the adult giving Charlie Bear the puppy a non aggressive/no contact cue. Thankfully he picked up on what he was being “told” and responded appropriately. Charlie Bear was giving Forge kisses and he was tolerant of the first few but it quickly got to be annoying and instead of him overreacting and hurting Charlie Bear he spoke dog to him. As well you all may remember a video where Hardy didn’t respect Forge’s personal space and was corrected. Notice Hardy is controlling himself better in this picture after having been corrected previously. If I need to get involved I’m close by but I wasn’t needed so I stayed out of it. But it was my job to be alert and aware of what was going on by observing the dynamics as they unfolded. These scenarios could easily occur in a vet’s office, at a dog park or simply walking down the street … and now all of them are better prepared to respond calmly and appropriately.

Also want to add that Charlie Bear was terrified of larger dogs when he first arrived and would run away shrieking and hide. So super proud of him overcoming his fears and he’s now friends with all of the dogs.

We encourage our dogs to run and play every day. It’s for their health. It’s also to learn how to function within a pack. That is not to say that they will never make a mistake because they will but by giving them these experiences over and over again it builds a foundation for them that we can in turn train and build on and their future family can as well.

Happy Thursday everyone!
The power of friendship in action.

“Mom… Someone said I was a foster pup .. no I not!”

Charlie Bear has health issues but being sad is not on the list. And around here we don’t worry about titles like “foster”, they are all loved as part of a family.

Adopt a rescue pup, it really is life changing for you and them. But until they find forever I’m going to soak up all that perfect love.

Available for Adoption!

D**o is approximately 1 year old so he’s mostly grown at this point. He is a lab possibly shepherd or husky mix. Whatever the mix his sky blue eyes and golden coat are striking. His coat is more medium in length but is easily maintained.

D**o is dewormed, vaccinated, on monthly heartworm preventative and neutered so the basics are done.

D**o is great with other dogs and doesn’t show interest in the cats. He should integrate easily into most homes.

D**o is obviously handsome but his loving laid back personality is just as impressive as his looks. He is very eager to learn and responds quickly to positive reinforcements such as treats and kind words and petting.

Please share. We must find homes for our current dogs before we can help others.

Happy Wednesday !

Left these two peas in a pod resting like this as I headed out early this morning.

Thought they might brighten your day as they do mine.

Millie the kitty is 15 years old possibly approaching 16 and she loves the dogs with all her heart. Possibly so they will keep her warm but I’m not sure a Chinese Crested which is mostly hairless is the most obvious choice. Maybe it’s a mutual heat exchange or better yet maybe they just love and respect each other the way that we should.

There is a lesson here in addition to that cuteness.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Love waking up to Sibbie’s sweet face and her gently jumping (placing her front feet only) up on my side of the bed after the alarm goes off. She no longer can jump on the bed as her cancerous (hard to even type the word) tumors on her abdomen limit her mobility and she doesn’t want us to boost her. So she sleeps on a comfy bed on the floor beside me. Whatever makes her happy we do, anything that stresses her out we avoid.

At present she’s still eating great, taking her pills like a champ and seems comfortable enough at least to hang out and goes outside to explore for brief periods. She is on pain meds but is still very much present and is loving the extra attention.

Enjoy the time you have with them. It passes too quickly.

We appreciate your continued prayers and good vibes.

Happy Monday !

Yesterday I finally got a minute to sit down and all this is going on….

Hardy got in the pool by himself and got him a drink (yucky water that I was only keeping to soak my sad little plants in) and look at him standing up !

Grace thought Hardy was drinking all the good water so she had to get her a sip too.

Beasley drinking out of the rain water tub that needed to be dumped giving me a little side eye at times and

Sweet Bryce being a good boy wanting extra love.

All the while I had just refilled three big bowls and a boiler with fresh cook water. 🤦‍♀️

Any one else have pups wanting to live “ off the grid” seemingly …. ?

Bryce and Beasley are available for adoption. They are 6 years old and are fully vetted. Beasley has an old injury on his back leg but he is definitely very mobile. We will separate them if you are unable to adopt both of them and they have been living independently for awhile at their own choosing but they do like to explore together.

Happy Sunday ! It’s a beautiful but hot day in Alabama …

Porch playtime while I clean their area…..

They are feeling so much better as they slowly recover from upper respiratory infection and eye issues. So far they have had their first kitten vaccination and two dewormings as they march towards full vetting and forever homes. 👏

Their momma(s) are getting spayed tomorrow and we are so excited to help!

And I was able to go to my bags of DONATED (and freshly laundered) toys and find them some items. Of course the leaf in the enclosure was their favorite but they will soon figure out the toys!

We are going to need your help sharing your find these sweet kittens a home!

Virginia continues to do well considering she’s got a very serious heart condition.

Hopefully she will help me spot stupid Japanese beetles that are eating up my ferns, roses and hibiscus!

Happy Saturday!

Low humidity and flowers to plant and of course I have lots of help. 🤦‍♀️

Wanted to share some pics of a face you haven’t got to see in awhile ..Dixie Chick Aka Worm to her friends … this little old lady wanted to say hi. ❤️

Worm is by far our smallest pup and when I say keeping her alive is a big part of my life I’m serious … she’s a super senior and weighs maybe 2 lbs but that’s with a heavy sweater on, belly full of food and a lead collar . Just kidding but she’s not even 2 lbs.

Worm was taken to the shelter years ago in severe distress. They stabilized her and we were asked to take her and well the answer is obvious. Since then I’ve devoted time every single day to checking her gums, keeping track of her body temperature, watching for sugar crashes, sitting with her praying she makes it through seizures as well as daily making sure she eats and drinks and poops and peeps. And of course she has a special diet as she has no teeth and I want to pack in calories for her. I tell her she’s got the metabolism of a hummingbird. Thankfully she’s a healthy girl and a happy girl and seems to be enjoying what will be a brief period outside with me. I can’t risk her getting too hot and she will be tired after this morning so she will be ready to nap after a bath (she’s got a oily coat probably from Yorkshire terrier side of her family) and quick combing.

Over the years and it’s been years, Worm was adopted twice that I can recall and both times ended up having a sugar crash landing on deaths doorstep before I could get to her. If she doesn’t eat she will crash and if she’s upset she won’t eat and if there is any stress or change she refuses to eat… you get the picture. Worm will have a home at Callie’s Place for what I pray will be many years but she’s not an easy keeper by any stretch of the imagination. There are two other families with dogs under 5 lbs that we assist with as well as they too have sugar issues so Worm is not an isolated case.

Can’t get back to my gardening without stating the obvious…. The breeding of these micro dogs is wrong. It’s unfair to them and it’s all about the money. No one needs a 2 lb dog and the health problems associated with it is unfair to the pup. Said it and I mean it. The fact that simply accidentally stepping on her or another dog or cat bumping her could seriously hurt or kill her alone is enough to discourage one from seeking a dog this small.

Happy Thursday!

Better known as Friday Eve!

Thought I’d share a huge dose of cuteness and a little serious reminder.

So this is Bud Bud. Bud Bud is one of the only dogs that I’ve ever had to work with to pick a name. We cycled through several until she decided Bud Bud was suitable and it fits her as well she will answer to Fuddy Buddy Bud Bud . 🤦‍♀️

There is no shortage of cuteness here. But there is tragedy in her past.

Bud Bud as best Dr White can tell was born with no eyes. She fooled me as she interacts great when playing and maneuvers well inside and outside so I thought she had limited vision. But the longer I’ve lived with her I agree she can’t see, her hearing and sense of smell compensate. And when we try to examine her eyes she gets so upset so there must be some pain or trauma associated with this. She keeps her eyes closed at all times which is best as it prevents further injuries.

Here’s the sad part of her story .. Bud Bud was a breeder apparently … she had a horrible spay surgery and we really worried about her recovering. Her little body was just worn out from litter after litter.

So in a nutshell … the mighty dollar (greed) from selling her what I am sure were precious puppies was going to happen even if it meant repeatedly breeding a dog with no eyes, bad skin issues and chronic ear infections. That is not okay and there is no justifying it. Period. Something to think about when buying puppies and supporting unscrupulous breeding practices.

Bud Bud now lives the good life, loved and cared for and respected.

I don’t have to look at the weather forecast. When I walk inside and there is no one to greet me, thunder and storms are on the way.

These kiddos put themselves in bed. We have stairs that they can use and even Bud Bud who is mostly blind has learned to use them.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Another day, more blurry priceless pics to share. ❤️

So why are these pics priceless? Simple answer- it shows a confident Thora. A happy , playful Thora. A Thora that is getting to be the best version of herself more every day. A Thora that ventured far away to explore but then returned when I called her. A Thora that has learned to trust.

Thora was so afraid that on pickup day when she arrived we didn’t even move her from the transporter crate to our crate. We moved her in her crate to my vehicle. It wasn’t worth her escaping which was a huge possibility as afraid as she was. She shook all the way home. And she is still skiddish at times and with strangers but she’s comfortable with me which tells me she can adjust to a new family. Thora is learning how to love and I’m in for that!

Thanks to your support we can welcome dogs like Thora who need the extra time.

If you think a young adult spayed female weighing approx 25 lbs …who likes other dogs and has the funniest big personality might be a fit with your family please contact us.

Thora has never met a pond, a bucket or a tote of water that she didn’t like! Her happy face tells the story.

(I am adding some “good” photos at the end to go along with my great blurry ones. It’s all about perspective. ❤️)

Babysitter or is it “kitten sitter” on duty….

Marked “SAFE”!

When we aren’t home this is where you will find Forge and when we are home he’s in/out checking on them. The kittens are now no longer terrified of dogs so a great socializing process happening that will help the kittens throughout their lives in the event they are adopted into homes with pups.

Happy Tuesday!

So many people have asked about Sibbie so I thought I’d do a quick post.

Sibbie continues to have a good appetite and enjoys going outside for very brief periods. She’s on antibiotics and pain meds daily and is still her loving silly self.

But daily we are losing the battle. The tumors on her abdomen continue to grow rapidly and there is no surgical option for removal. They bother her terribly and we look for opportunities to distract her and to get her mind off this even if it’s a matter of a minute for a treat.

Soon … we will take her back to see Dr. White for us to discuss her quality of life. We love Sibbie so much that we can’t bear the thought of letting her go but we also love her so much that we will not let her suffer.

And yes please continue to pray for her and us too. Thank you all so much!

Happy Monday !

“$5 each or you can have them all for $10” …. I’ll take 3 for $10 🤦‍♀️

You all should have seen me running back to the car for $10. For ten bucks I got the three kittens to safety and an opportunity to educate on spay/neuter (but most importantly I got the kittens secured in air conditioning).

Hot. Crated. Side of very busy highway. Kittens were panting and scared to death. Their little bodies were hot to the touch.

There was no way when I saw them and heard this that they were going anywhere but home with me and they were going to be Callie’s Place kids and that’s how we got Tyla, Ella and Nieva a little over a week ago.

I explained to the guy that these three would be fully vetted before adoption and I also told him about Cans for Kritters or to contact us. Sadly neither will likely happen but I offered solutions. He said the Momma Cat was a good mouser, I told him I’d never know if these three are or not that they will be spayed/neutered and live inside. I asked him to please get her spayed that there are too many adorable kittens now without homes. He seemed unphased as so many people do as they feel it’s acceptable to sell them for whatever they can or give them away. It really doesn’t matter as ultimately the “excess” kittens and puppies will end up discarded. That’s just so sad. We can do better. We must do better.

While not satisfied with the situation, at least the three kittens will not contribute to the overpopulation problem for the rest of their lives.

The past few weeks the free kittens and free puppies signs and posts have about immobilized my small brain. There is no such thing as free when it comes to a pet. They all need and deserve a minimum number of vaccinations, dewormings, litter and litter box, water, quality food and spay or neuter. None of that is free. In fact the best “deal” that you can get is on one that is adopted from a shelter or a rescue as these items are part of the adoption fee and people occasionally fuss about that but that falls on deaf ears. People who have pets and obtain the proper vetting and do all the things right know how costly proper care is.

A free kitten or a free puppy needs the very same items that all others do. Please if you are seeking a free pet, don’t fail them. Get the vetting they need and spay/neuter them.

I’ve been involved in rescue for a long time and it’s as critical as I’ve ever witnessed. Shelters are overflowing, rescues too and the needs never stop coming because spaying and neutering isn’t a priority. Make it a priority in your home and to your friends and family and co-workers. There are not enough homes for the senseless numbers in need of homes much less keep adding to them. Everyone talks about low cost spay neuter options, there are options available but they require being proactive, paperwork and paying for services (said low cost not free) and actually taking action by meeting the transport or dropping the pet off.

If one of those girls (that’s what I think and I’m known to be wrong at sexing kittens) catches your eye please contact us.
