Happy Tuesday everyone!

Time to introduce a new pup and time for you all to welcome him to the Callie’s Place family! Might as well welcome him as he’s certainly made himself right at home just as we want all of them to do.

So this little guy is Potato. He likes the name and it suits him as he’s shaped like a potato. I know really original !! But c’mon who doesn’t love a scruffy dog named Potato.

Potato is 12 years old so we were told. But someone probably needs to let Potato know as he certainly doesn’t act like an older gentleman but he definitely acts like a gentleman. He loves going on all the walks, joins in on the play groups and has made friends with all the dogs. Potato is crate trained, leash trained and house trained as well with access to a doggy door at least.

Potato is very friendly, loving and social. He is also an excellent snuggler but is not an overly needy dog. He will settle down and nap like a pro! Hot weather is hard on him as it is on us so we are doing longer walks as the weather permits but short walks suit him just fine.

If you are looking for a scruffy super cute companion who would really enjoy keeping you active at least on short walks and enjoy just hanging out, Potato is your guy. He is fully vetted and is on monthly preventatives.

Potato deserves a soft landing in a forever home where he will be loved and enjoyed. He really is a very easy keeper and we are enjoying him being part of your family and I am confident that you would as well.

Please share!

Happy Monday everyone!

It’s a hot one. Seems like every summer gets hotter and hotter but that’s probably more about me getting older and older. And that means our sweet residents are too.

Thought you all might like to see Larky and hear that she is doing well. Truly one of the best dogs to ever pass through our doors. Larky has been a role model and Aunt Larky to so many that there is no way I could even come close to counting. She will still spend some extra time with the new kiddos on the block like Baby Girl but the heat keeps her mostly inside. It is so strange how the new ones gravitate to her, they know there are angel wings hidden under all that fur just as we know.

Thankfully she’s holding her weight, eating good, still attentive and alert and loves her family especially the two legged variety. I’m so thankful that Christal showed Larky to us that day at Tuscaloosa Metro and we said yes. She was a beautiful walk flower there, causing no ruckus, just shy and mostly unseen by most. But boy was there so much more to her story.

Dogs like Larky who truly need rescue are who we are here for. We aren’t about the numbers or recognition , we are here to help animals in need who ultimately help humans in need. In Larky’s case we were those humans as we wouldn’t be where we are today without her and many others. And just think, she is grateful that we rescued her.

I can’t tell you how many times she has stepped in to help us with fearful puppies or helped us to catch a feral kitten when it would escape its enclosure, or when she asked me to help some premature baby rats once that she brought to me in her mouth, or carefully brought a bullfrog to us that was injured (that was a tough one). But for me the very best were the times when I’ve been sitting on the steps falling completely to pieces when she would so gently walk up, take a seat beside me and just lean against me. Larky has never gotten up and left me one time, she stays until I tell her it’s okay and she waits for me to move. Somehow Larky has the right touch for all of us and she is simply one of the best ever. She keeps those angel wings hidden well but her actions reveal who she is, we all know.

Happy Sunday !

The perfect day for us to introduce Joshua.
Joshua was found by a good Samaritan along with two other siblings in an area that has no resources dedicated to animal care. Thankfully this kind man managed to get all three although it took some creativity and elbow grease and now all three have a real chance.

Now that real chance is on our shoulders and your shoulders but there is help on standby and it’s got three powerful opportunities for us to utilize and they are free!

1) social media - please share
2) cell phone - text pics to people
3) our voice - tell people about Joshua and the other adoptables, ask people to like and follow Callie’s Place and promote rescue

Please do all three !

Joshua is relying on us.

He is approximately 10/12 weeks, he has started his vaccinations (had both puppy vaccination and bordatella) and has been dewormed. We will coordinate the rest at our expense.

Joshua is believed to be a lab/terrier and a touch of chow. But what he is known to be is loving, playful and most handsome. And he doesn’t know it but he’s got a determined army that is about to get busy finding him a home. Once Joshua has a home we will get siblings 2 and 3 (male and female) who are safe and being cared for.

Let’s get busy!

(Sorry all pics are on concrete but Joshua isn’t fully vaccinated so safety first!)

Happy Saturday!

Busy day … day that Pennywise I mean Fox got his summer hairdo. Since Barry is his favorite victim I mean person , he took the lead on this disaster I mean project and it worked out pretty nice I must say. After his haircut, Fox got a bath and a mani and pedi and then promptly plopped himself in dirt in the tractor bucket.

I thought that a haircut might tone his attitude down a bit but apparently not.

Rescue life, it’s not easy but it matters.

In today’s segment of “Tracey is a fanatic 4th of July edition” ….

BunBun …

BunBun enjoys being with us. We enjoy her (we think her we aren”t sure) being with us. And to ensure that, when outside she is inside a heavy duty crate that we can move around so that she can graze. And we have a mobile fence around her that give the humans time to get to her if a dog decides they want to charge at her. She knows that she is safe and will sit and munch on grass even while one barks at her. Smug little bunny that she is! And today she has a cool watermelon slice sitting in the shade as a treat for being so cooperative.

Fanatical maybe ? I’m okay with that. That is our job to keep them safe.

Happy 4th - indulge in a sweet treat today to celebrate and stay safe like BunBun.

Happy 4th of July everyone from the Callie’s Place gang !

It’s Independence Day!

While everyone is excited and firing up grills and looking for a place to cool off, fireworks are also part of many people’s festivities. Fireworks are fun but not for most of our furry friends. So make sure you have their collars with ID tags on and that they stay inside safe.

Last night out of the blue they started in our community and Larky is terrified. Thankfully she comes to us and didn’t bolt. So don’t be caught off guard as we were. I was trying to take pictures of Joshua the new puppy one minute and then the firewirks crackled startling all of us. The fireworks don’t have to wait until it is dark !

We pray that you and your family including the furry ones have a wonderful and safe 4th!

Happier pics coming today but thought this one makes a good case.

While sitting minding my business hanging out with the pups, Barry spots us and sends me this picture and text.

There is truth that Pipey is spoiled and may be super spoiled but that’s okay. One day someone will realize they need a shoulder warming precious little man, until then we will be practicing.

Pipey is the smallest of Deed’s puppies and still needs a little extra, I’m more than happy to accomodate him. Truth is he loves me far more than I deserve but I’m trying.

Animals sadly are only with us for a portion of our lives but we are their entire life.

Happy Thursday !

Rescue is truly like a box of chocolates or maybe even more like entering a cake walk. Either way you know you are getting something good, just not always something that is maybe your first choice or what you think you might want or need. Maybe you don’t like chocolate and pecans but that doesn’t mean it’s not good. Maybe you don’t like coconut cake but others do. But you get to try something new and who knows — you may love it! So you always win! Rescue is much the same.

But sometimes you get the yummiest piece of candy and cake!

That’s rescue too.

And this week that happened.

Everyone say hi to Baby Girl. At 5/6 years old this little lady has spent her life getting sweeter and sweeter apparently.

She was loved by her owner but things had gotten rocky over the last sixish months and she wasn’t cared for as she should have been. But that’s history now as she has planted roots at Callie’s Place and is doing so well. Baby Girl adjusted instantly. I honestly have really never had anything like this to happen that I can recall. Most dogs (I first typed all dogs but corrected it) need time to adjust to people, places and things but not Baby Girl. I think she decided on the car ride home that I’m her new mom and she was going to be fine with whatever happened next and she was and she is just amazing. From living as an only dog to multiple dogs, to no cats to living with cats, from what was likely calm to a lot of activity and sounds.. she embraced it all. The place, the people, the animals and the routine - it’s all hers now.

I looked at her this morning sleeping soundly on her blanket beside me and she looked so peaceful. I started to think that maybe dogs are seeking the same thing that we as humans are… to be loved and accepted as we are. That’s all that we have done for Baby Girl. We haven’t changed a thing to accommodate the new girl but we also haven’t tried changing her, we accepted her as she is and she did the same. Has she had an accident or two inside ? Yes and that was causing great stress at her prior home even though she wasn’t being taken out frequently. I just cleaned it up and we moved on. Now she’s following the other in/out constantly and loves being outside exploring.

I’m so thankful that Baby Girl found her way to Callie’s Place (shoutout big thanks to a prior adopter). Not only did she need a soft landing but I needed her to stop me in my tracks and remind me that sometimes taking a chance or embracing change brings you exactly what your heart and soul needs.

Life is good. Sometimes when the wheel of life spins you land exactly where you were needed and wanted, just ask Baby Girl.

If you are looking for the perfect companion, get your application in, Baby Girl will be available after her vet appointment assuming all checks out well.

Tackled a big quarterly project today ..cleaning and sanitizing the catio. Big job as it requires all kitties to be out while it’s pressure washed, cleaned and dried. It is cleaned from top to bottom and that is no quick feat. They love it after its set back up and always have to smell every inch.

Also it’s deworming day and flea/tick treatment. We use the crate to make sure each one gets their dosage.

They use the catio year round even though they have access inside where it’s heated and cooled it’s far more interesting out there. We are currently looking for an outdoor fan that we can install to help with air flow.

All of these cats are available for adoption and are obviously cat and dog friendly.

Y’all spot anyone that might not be a catio resident ?

Happy Wednesday !

Just finished up my last work task before I get to enjoy a couple of days off. Feels good!

That means knocking some rescue projects off the list. But first I’m enjoying a nice breeze and watching the torts enjoy THEIR watermelon. A watermelon that our neighbor left with a note that said “this is for the torties”. … made me smile. Now Pokey and I want to know where the one for us to enjoy is ? Just kidding we love that people love them as we do.

Don’t tell anyone but I gave BumBun amd Slimy the goldfish some too.

Happy Tuesday !

Sela stretching to get ready to see who might need to be straightened out this morning. She is small and a little chubby but don’t underestimate a chihuahua .. ever. And certainly one as feisty as Sela.

Turkeys !! Now that they are fully feathered it’s probably not necessary to bring them inside at night but I can so I am! In typical fashion the turkeys are spoiled and are pets only. The dogs have been surprisingly accepting of them and do not pester them at night. They do like to watch them but the new has worn off so now the turkeys are just part of the family.

Sela was especially intrigued when they were drinking out of the cup (I mean that is common right?) She had to check it out for herself.

After years of no poultry it is really nice to have them once again and we cannot wait to share them with you all.

All creatures deserve to be treated with care and dignity.
