Welcome to Callie's Place! A 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama Callie’s Place is a very active animal rescue at present.

We currently house many dogs and cats that are up for adoption as well we provide lifelong sanctuary for many others who for various reasons are not available for adoption. We speak at churches, schools, civic clubs and other events on the benefits and necessity of spay and neuter. We are a no-kill rescue, which means once an animal makes it to us it is safe. Goals:
1. To improve the lives of pet

s and people in West Alabama with an emphasis on our communities by giving unnurtured, unloved animals a second, real chance.
2. Teaching children and adults about the proper care of pets and domestic animals
3. And teaching about the benefits of spay and neuter thru
a. Mobile spay neuter clinic
b. Partnerships with local vet offices and universities
4. Establishment of a Callie’s Place Shelter

Millie’s level of cool is off the charts. Or maybe she’s snug as a bug in a rug in her heated pea pod, either way she’s perfect.

At almost 16 years old we do everything possible as always have to keep her on a consistent routine. She holds my heart in those little paws.

Hitting the slopes …. Alabama style! I think this may have been the most peaceful beautiful walk we have ever had. The sun has claimed most of the snow but we have certainly enjoyed it.

Little Tink loves the snow…. Even though her little belly and her legs were in contact with the snow more than a typical dog she didn’t want to come in. I actually had to insist that she come in and at the last minute she tried to give me the slip at the door and hide so that I couldn’t get her. Tomorrow we will enjoy whatever snow is left !

Her happiness and joy at the simplest of things makes a huge impact on us daily. And her love for Sudsi is even more endearing. After Eva Frances Dumpling passed away, Tink was lonely and depressed and then she met Sudsi and we saw her spark return. ❤️

More snow theatrics… heck we gotta enjoy it while it’s here !

So big week at Callie’s Place. Phoenix Max started his heartworm meds protocol Wednesday and so far, so good. We weren’t sure this day would come due to his advanced heartworm disease but here we are ! Please keep those prayers coming.

Phoenix Max is on strict confinement as running or strenuous exercise could be deadly. So he will be leash walked but that didn’t keep him from having a good time with Havana and O’Malley. Our goal is for him to one day maybe a year down the road to be off leash running and playing but until he gets the green light on being heartworm free, we just get to enjoy more leash walks with him. We will do whatever we are instructed to do that gives him the best chance at kicking heartworms to the curb.

Your support allows Phoenix Max to have this treatment which is not optional. Without this regimen he will die, it’s just that simple. He is under the veterinary care of Dr White at Tidmore Vet as well as specialty vets at Mississippi State University. Phoenix Max’s case is complicated and serious- we appreciate the time and consideration that has been invested into putting an individualized plan together for him.

Snow day !

This was their second trip out and it was a quick one. Sweaters and pjs all got wet when we went out at 4:30.

Tink, Ming, Stevie loved it.. more pics later.
Sarah Rose and Karina acted like it was no big deal, running and playing as usual.
Forge and Auntie Em were like ok I’ll let Mom get her picture then I’m headed inside.
Evelyn, Margie, Luna, Gracie, Rudi and Sudsi were not fans.

This cold weather week has kicked the humans tails, we will not be sad to see 50 degree or even 40 degree weather but it was so much fun to see the dogs playing.

Happy cold Wednesday !

What if I told you that a rescue had an opportunity to spay/ neuter and vaccinate three “community “ strays … a momma dog (pittie mix) and her two older puppies before momma and daughter have (more) puppies and before brother can father more puppies ….That would be pretty cool right?

And then what if I told you that same rescue had an opportunity to vaccinate and neuter a male pittie mix and have his badly deformed (possibly due to injury) jaw examined. Super cool right?

And guess what the name of the rescue who is undertaking this is ? Callie’s Place, yep that was thinly disguised but I’m too excited to keep this on the downlow. It is going to take several people working together to pull this off as the three community strays are not going to be super thrilled with this commotion.

It gets better … now guess how soon that rescue is going to try to coordinate this? Monday. Gotta strike when the iron is hot aka while we have the appointments.

The three community strays are lovingly cared for by the staff at the business where they live so they will have a familiar place to return to where they are welcomed. Getting them altered and vaccinated will help to ensure that they get to stay there! We will also evaluate them during their time with us to see what other options might be possible over time. The pittie with the deformed jaw will come to Callie’s Place as soon as space permits.

If you would like to be a part of this fairly big undertaking we would appreciate it! Your monetary donations as well as dog food for these strays is much appreciated and we will see that the food is given to the caretakers. Being able to stop the cycle of more puppies, better the health of the dogs and possibly prevent them from getting a fatal disease is huge — together we can do this!

Margie is not a fan of the cold weather……but when you are this cute you can manipulate your parents into letting you sleep on the electric blanket ALL day and your Dad makes sure you stay covered up.

Spoiled and we have plans to continue.

Happy Tuesday !

The power of the pack once again knocks one out of the park. This is Frannie’s first walk with us off leash and by her choosing. You can see how unsure she was in the first couple of pics but she wasn’t about to stay home and be left behind when the others were having fun on the trail. Before it was over she was relaxed and happy. Mission accomplished pack!

Frannie is shy. She came in with Asher who was adopted immediately. They weren’t blood related but knew each other and caught a ride together to Callie’s Placs. Frannie was and is to some extent very shy. But she’s pushing herself and is making progress. Dogs just like people move forward in life at different speeds. And that’s okay. We don’t know Frannie’s background but we know that she was neglected and failed. So we have to be consistent and patient and give her the time she needs to trust us and understand. That’s a luxury that we have and that we take advantage of. We don’t rush dogs out the door to get adoption fees or to post big adoption numbers. That’s not who we are and we are blessed in that we don’t have to sprint. That allows us to accept puppies and dogs that are frequently passed over by others.

Rescue to us is a marathon… and for shy dogs like Frannie especially shy black dogs who are so easily overlooked it’s a marathon that is a matter of life and death. But with the pack pulling, encouraging and showing her the way to the finish line she’s got the odds for once in her short life in her favor. We are so thankful that she’s building confidence and following their lead. Special recognition for Frannie’s milestone to Bryce the tiny chihuahua who was never allowed out of his home and who has been under the weather recently, Thora the shy shepherd mix who was facing euthanasia , Beasley the three “good” legs chihuahua who like his brother Bryce was kept inside a room and not allowed outside to play, Icee Blue who is just plain fearless and Hardy the previously paralyzed pup who is a walking miracle - all found ways throughout the walk to include Frannie. All of these (with the exception of Icee Blue) were overlooked, passed over and not going to have happy endings and look at them now, rescuing others! There were many others on our walk but these encouraged her and played with her along the way.

And just think they let me tag along!

Frannie is fully vetted and ready for her next chapter. Maybe that’s you!

Happy cold Monday !

We had a few snowflakes this morning to start things off but that didn’t stop the wild pack from bounding outside. They seem to love the cold when it’s a quick trip in and out. But it better be quick!

While standing there filling water bowls I saw Auntie Em and Luna go running by to do their potty business but within minutes they were back at my side. Don’t they know I told myself that I wasn’t going to love them? Heck I decided I wasn’t even going to like them (just kidding). Don’t they know that I’m not their momma, this isn’t their house and we aren’t their family? Someone needs to tell them. Set the record straight with these two.

But you know what ? They wouldn’t believe you. They would in their own little heeler heads decide you were clueless, probably on something… decide that you don’t know a darn thing about what’s going on and you aren’t their boss and give you a “bless your heart” look as they left you in the dust. They would tell you quick that I am their Mom, that they live at Callie’s Place and they have their own bed and blankets and that we are their family because we act like a family and we are a family. Emphatically you would be told that we are their family they don’t want to hear another word about it and you just need to save your breath.

They know I love them and they love me and we don’t always like each other (that would mostly be them not liking me, quick to point out my many imperfections like running out of treats, bathing them, not going on the full hike, all serious dog issues like that and yeah sometimes I fall down and even worse often times they can’t herd me in the right direction). Sometimes they just have to overlook me as I’m doing the best a human can, I don’t have heeler super powers but they are willing to work with me anyway. They would tell you all that and more (they are heelers you know they have the smarts and the looks - I was told to be sure to include this part- facts!)

You would love them too and they might even adopt you if you were super nice and even if you need a little time and patience they would work with you as they do me. It’s a tough job but they are the ladies up for the challenge and I’m pretty sure they would love to have a family that is all theirs. Sharing isn’t really their number one virtue but they do get along great as part of the pack. And I’ll tell you they will love you far more than you deserve, as that’s how they love me.

If you are considering adopting ….check out these two. We would consider adopting them separately to the “right” heeler approved family but their standards are high, you must love them as much as they love you.

Much love that wasn’t supposed to happen for these two and they know it! And it’s hard to show in pics but these are little ladies each under 20 lbs.

The one thing that Forge truly pouts over is his sweater dress …his pajama legs got wet in the grass so I took those off, threw in the wash and quickly put his sweater on him.

A big tough guy giving me stink eye over his attire. And pouting to the point he refused his treats and went and hid his blanket, leash and toy named Mr. Squeakems. But won’t abandon me while I’m doing laundry duties.

Now he’s got me feeling guilty ….

Hardy still amazes me…. He loves going walking and hiking even though it exhausts him. Hardy and Forge have developed a little issue as they both prefer to walk at my right side but we are figuring things out so that all parties are happy.

The puppies turned 4 weeks old Thursday and today is their second deworming. They are so sweet and starting to show their personalities.

As much as we enjoy them it’s a sad day as we lost their sister this morning. She was the second largest female and showed no signs of trauma or sickness. We heard them playing and went in to let Deed out to potty and she wasn’t breathing. We tried cpr which has worked on so many others before and there was no bringing her back. We are both so crushed as it just makes no sense. I know I know I know it happens but that makes it no easier. We have held them and loved them since the second they were born and caring for them for now a little over four weeks you get attached and it’s so hard. We take a lot of dogs and cats that we know aren’t long for this world and we bury way more than most hearts can take but that doesn’t make it one bit easier.

Please pray for Deed and the puppies. Please pray that this is an isolated freak occurrence and the other 11 continue to do well. They are all so precious and perfect just as Lady (9 ladies dancing) was. We know she wasn’t afraid as she made her way to the Rainbow Bridge as she had far too many waiting on her but her two humans here on the ground sure are lost without her.

The only consolation after losing Lady is to know that she was loved from before birth, every second of her short life with us and forever. Lady never knew anything but kindness, care and love every second of her life.

Happy New Year from Havana and the rest of the Callie’s Place gang!

I just know this is going to be her year to find her forever home.

Hard to believe a few months ago she lost all of her puppies, had emergency c section, a difficult spay and look at her now …. Her best life is before her and she knows it.

Havana is available for adoption.

As we tick closer to saying goodbye to 2024, we wanted to thank each of you for your support and love this year. Time after time we asked and time after time you all were there. We are grateful. We are better together with you and we wouldn’t want to do this rescue life without you.

As I finished the last walk of 2024 I started to think about a sentence that my dear Papa wrote in a card to me many years ago when I moved to Birmingham and started my first out of college job in 1992. There are a lot of words of wisdom in that letter but the sentence that sticks with me is “be kinder than you have to”. Pretty insightful advice. I think that’s going to be my inspiration for 2025 along with “water it anyway” which definitely helped to get me through some rough patches in 2024.

Just got a text message from Barry:

“Just great. They can all walk to the door now”

I replied “cool. Did you get a picture? “

His reply “I did not. Wasn’t worried about pic. Still not worried about it. I can’t even get them all back in their room. Two maybe three I can’t count them are under the Christmas tree. Waiting on Deed to assist. May need backup”

Deed getting her steps in today …. She’s such a delight! The puppies are now following her to the door and are getting more mobile daily. Things ‘bout to get real interesting as we start to take on more puppy duties.

Deed’s only message as we transition to more hands on caretakers as she steps back .. “DON’T FORGET TO BOOK MY SPAY APPT!”

Red Fox wanted me to let all of you know that he’s doing great ….

He was in shock and barely breathing that Sunday when he was returned to us instead of being euthanized. God must have a plan for this little daredevil because he’s certainly showing up and showing out these days. Grateful.

Fox loves having his picture taken and it usually culminates with a close up and him booping the camera, this time I managed to be one step ahead. 😉

Deed’s dozen at 9 days…. We love every one of them.

Hero

Meant to share this weekend but vertigo snuck up on me…yuck! I’ve decided that our Hero was crated his entire life. That explains his creepy long broken cracking yellow toenails, his humped over posture, his poor muscle tone, low weight, small size and this….he is loving being part of the pack but when we walk he circles me constantly. Only rarely does he go in a straight line away and explore. I promised him after I figured things out that he would build confidence, strength and stamina as we hit the woods this winter. Everything is scary to him but he’s trying. Hero is still fragile. His skin even with antibiotics, steroids and weekly medicated baths as well as supplements, advanced nutrition and daily cleansing is not progressing very much. The skin is raw under the scabs, the pads on his feet are still inflamed — he suffers yet he’s happy. Hero is amazing. So we stick with the plan and I pray for the person who did this to him as they are seriously bad off. (The little quick rearing up motion was his pitiful attempt to jump up on me. Hero is intently watching the other dogs and imitates them in his own way. He is very quick to cower but that too will improve .)

For those asking about Scoot and Kix the two little mangy chihuahua pups… here you go ! They are absolutely fabulous.

Hope this makes you all smile as it does me… to see Hardy rolling around kicking those bum legs makes my heart pitter patter. He and several others have been dealing with upset stomach for several weeks on/off but all are feeling better. This guy will be hitting the trails with us this fall, building strength and making his momma proud.

Pokey celebrated his two year anniversary as part of the Callie’s Place family on 8/20/24. And a huge birthday as well this year in the 22/25 year range. From fear to now enjoying shell scratches this old guy has won our hearts. At first he was afraid of everything especially us, the sun, his big tank as his entire life changed. Now he and Slimy his goldish friend live peacefully and don’t have any worries. His biggest issue at present is a good one to have. As he continues to grow he is shedding scutes from his shell and that makes back I mean shell scratches even better! Yes he’s spoiled, as he should be.

This is determination! After water therapy, PT and about thirty minutes playing Hardy walked to the house and waited on the others. Respect.

Happy Thursday ! Bully the newest aquatic is a shy guy but starting to interact with us more! But the big display at the end is too cute. Hopefully he’s getting ready to shed soon. Thought you all might need a smile ! This is a no way I’m outta here … okay let me see, I’m leaving to I’m back, leaving again to I’m back and I’ll show you my big mouth you better get moving lady moment. ❤️

Hardy is so resilient and amazing. From paralyzed to dragging full time to pushing up now walking .. granted it’s wonky … but walking.

Sometimes I question why … why we commit so much to the creatures. Then one of them.. today it was Zin… remind me. That sweet purr and those eyes will win anyone over. Zin is available for adoption.
