Dog trick training the fun way using positive reward based training only. I have been training my own dogs tricks,agility,obedience for many years. I do it for fun to increase the bond with my dogs. Lola is now the world's first Trick Dog Champion Tibetan Terrier. I am a Certified Trick Dog Instructor and can help and advise anyone who would like to go through the a Trick certificates. We are running a KC Advanced Good Citizen course for 5 weeks in September covering both Silver & Gold levels the option of a Silver or Gold (or both!) test at the end. You do not need to take the test if you prefer not to, or feel not ready enough.
The test would be £15 and on a different day, so you get 5 whole weeks to practice.

Instead of thinking about what you DON'T want your dog to do you have to think about what you DO want them to do otherwise you miss the opportunity to reinforce the good stuff.
You get more of what you practice.
Practice makes perfect. Even if the practice is something that you don't enjoy.
Remember, habits don't just go away because you want them to suddenly. Habits are created in our practice. What are you practicing and reinforcing today?
An oversimplified way to think about it:
1. Manage the environment so the bad stuff cannot happen.
2. Train behaviors you like. Go to mat, nose touch, stay, tricks. Reinforce these behaviors!
3. If you see an unwanted behavior, go back to steps 1 and 2.

Our Friday Bronze Intermediate group graduated by learning a few tricks.We also discussed not jumping up people, and how to teach their dogs to do something else instead! They left with their certificates and a bag full of treats..We really hope we see you again in future courses ❤️
Trick class!
Our trick class pupils graduated today! We learned rollovers, jumping through hoops, taking our socks off, ringing bells, leg weaves and a whole host of other tricks! We had lots of fun and the dogs had really waggy tails!

Ok lets learn our Third trick! This one is called ' Rollover' Please make¨ sure your dog does NOT have a bad back or joint issues, IS on a comfortable surface as is NOT wearing a harness. The finished result is the dog rolling over on cue. Step one Lure ( treat in front of nose) the dog's head towards his shoulder. Reward for any head movement towards desired position. Reward. Step two Keep luring his head and reward each time, at some point he will roll on his side! Let him do this naturally, don't roll him over. He may go straight over like Zac did, as you can see it surprised him slightly but we had a party and celebrated his success. Step three Once he is reliably doing this call mat 'Rollover' Step 4 Start making this look like a trick! Make your hand cue smaller and eventually stand up Step 5 Keep practicing & fading out your large obvious hand signal unit you can do a tiny circle with your hands and say "Rollover' I have left all Zaccy's learning process in for you to see, he had never done that trick before. It was done over several sessions. All stages will take time depending on the flexibility & ability of your dog. Do not do this if your dog has a bad back or hip/joint issues. As always reward reward for anything you like even if its not perfect. You can see several of those in my video. Reward if he is getting the idea Dont expect it to just happen, you need to teach your dog. Train over several short sessions. Keep the mood happy & positive & the treats amazing. I have added the finished result on the end of this video with a very happy & chatty Lola doing this trick at a small distance away from me. Ok lets learn our second trick! This one is called ' Bang Bang' The finished result is the dog in a dramatic position on his back with your hand in a gun shape pointing at him. For this behaviour we teach him the last behaviour first & the first behavior last. This is called back chaining & makes it easier for him to learn as he will know the last part the best. Step one Lure ( treat in front of nose) the dog's head towards his shoulder. Reward for any head movement towards desired position. Reward. Step two Keep luring his head and reward each time, at some point he will roll on his side! Let him do this naturally, don't roll him over. Step three Once he is reliably doing this start working towards a dramatic pose, reward once he is in the pose you like. (You should only be rewarding the dramatic pose now, not the head turn.) Try doing this without a treat lute in your hand now. Step 4 Say " Bang Bang" as he rolls into the pose. Step 5 Start making this look like a trick! Change your hand signal to a gun shape. Try with him sitting up and then lying & rolling over. Stand up yourself. Step 6 Keep practicing & fading out your large obvious hand signal so the gun shaped hand and " Bang Bang" is enough for him to collapse onto his back, legs in the air! I have left all Pebbles' learning process in for you to see, she had never done that trick before. It was done over several sessions. All stages will take time depending on the flexibility & ability of your dog. Do not do this if your dog has a bad back or hip/joint issues. Every week I will be posting a 'How to' video. This one is " Say Your Prayers" I have left in the learning process so its not perfect. This is real time learning. Ok lets learn our first trick! This one is called 'Say your prayers' The finished result is the dog with his two front paws on your arm, (or on a chair if he is large ) bowing his head between his paws. Step one Get one paw on your arm, mark & reinforce. Step two Then start working towards both paws. Mark & reinforce. Step three The final part is getting the head bow. This is done with holding and releasing a treat under the arm that the dog's paws are on, to get him to look down at it. This will take time depending on the flexibility & ability of your dog. I have left all Pebbles' learning process in for you to see, she had never done that trick before. It was done over several sessions. As always reward reward for anything you like even if its not perfect. You can see several of those in my video. Reward if he is getting the idea Dont expect it to just happen, you need to teach your dog. Train over several short sessions. Keep the mood happy & positive & the treats amazing.
