Our dear, precious Rufus,
My, what a wonderful doggie you’ve been! I will ever be grateful to you for your diligent, unwavering love for me.
It breaks my heart to let you go, but it’s so very evident that you need relief.
I remember when Glenda gave you to me, and you nervously p*ed on the floor and looked up at me with those big brown eyes. Since you were the first and only dog I’d ever owned, I wondered to myself, “What have I gotten myself into?”. Well, enormous devotion, pleasure, love, comfort and happiness is what I had gotten myself into!

You’ve been with me through deaths of my parents and brother, huge life changes, college, and marriage, always with that steadfast devotion that I had no idea existed from any creature. When Jimmy and I were married, you showed him the same devotion that you have me. I know he is going to miss you too, but he’s trying to be strong, to hold me up.

We’ve been “Me and you and a dog named Ru” and what a great trio we have been. We’ve traveled across the USA, up to Indiana, been hiking, bicycle riding, four-wheeler riding, kayaking and camping… what a great time we’ve had together.

I am not quite sure how to go about life without you, quite honestly. You’ve been in my life almost 15 years! I’m going to do my best to honor your memory, and live up to being as good as you seem to think that I am.

Your devotion to us just fills us with awe. You, Rufus P.Fletcher (emphasis on the P!) are our Squisher Squish, Mutt Puppy, Rufus Roo, Ru Man, Underfoot, but of all, you are our Friend, and you have left a tremendous paw print on our hearts. Each day and almost every place we go in our home, our yard and in our lives holds memories of you that make us catch our breath now. We know it will get better, but it’s really hard right now.

I don’t know what realm that God has for you, but you deserve the best of the best! We look forward to seeing you again. We want to see your eyes light up, ears perk up and you run toward us with great joy.

The time has come, our precious boy, to break free from the pain and live your best life. Chase squirrels, bark at suspicious looking leaves, and p*e on anything that looks like it needs it. You’ve earned all the rest and happiness that a precious puppy could ever have.
