Fact Slap 👋
TITANIC’s Cat Jenny.
So she was mentioned on another group’s post and a few comments have come up saying that Jenny, the ships cat left the ship before it sailed which took me on quite the investigation to find out if there ever was a definite answer on what happened to her.
Yes there was a Jenny and it appears she joined the ship in Belfast. She had been the Chief Mouser on OLYMPIC, at this time in history and for as long as man has sailed the oceans rats and mice are always a problem and cats were employed onboard to keep the rodents in check. For this the cat would have a lot of freedom to roam around and be spoiled by crew and passengers alike.
It appears that Jenny was transferred to TITANIC whilst OLYMPIC was in for repair. Jenny the sailed from
Belfast to Southampton for the delivery voyage.
That is what we know to be true but it’s in Southampton where what is fact, fiction and now urban legend have become mixed.
We have two testimonies stating that Jenny had kittens on the voyage from Belfast and had been taken care of by Joseph Mullholland, a stoker. This is from his testimony after being interviewed about one of those “who missed the boat” as he didn’t sail with the ship on the maiden voyage. This apparently was due to an uneasy feeling he got on the ship. This was, in his words confirmed to him as he had seen Jenny taking her kittens off the ship at Southampton and placing them safely on the dockside. Unfortunately, no exact date can be given for this and it appears that Joseph was also a bit of troublemaker, he was accused of chalking anti-Catholic graffiti and having an altercation with a young engineering officer. We do know that he left the ship and returned to Belfast.
His story was confirmed by Violet Jessop who was a steward on TITANIC but had also been on OLYMPIC when it was in the collision with HMS HAWKE and was on HMHS BRITANNIC when she struck a mine, she survived all three disasters and is seen as a credible witness for TITANIC researchers. Violet did confirm the Jenny was looked after by Joseph but can’t confirm that Jenny left the ship when Joseph left.
So here we have the next issue, did she leave or not? If she and new kittens stayed onboard then we’re sure we can all work out what happened to her. Admittedly despite TITANIC being one of the most researched ships and historical events ever, there are no surviving reports state that Jenny and her kittens were onboard.
If she did leave then she disappears from history as she would have just been another dockyard cat probably tolerated by the staff as she would have continued hunting the vermin in the many dockyard warehouses.
I’ll let you all draw your own conclusions.
