Living Art by Frank Payne Keeper and breeder of exceptional reptiles and amphibians. Hello! Besides animal health, customer service is my number one priority.
(1)

My name is Frank Payne and I am a biology teacher, former AZA senior herpetology zookeeper, and breeder of exceptional lizards. I have been keeping and breeding reptiles and amphibians continuously, both personally and professionally, for over twenty five years. During my time as a zookeeper, I was part of a team that created and staffed multiple exhibitions that were part of many of the best faci

lities in the world, including the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, among many others. During that time I made multiple television appearances, including The Late Show with David Letterman. I am currently focusing on breeding several species of beautiful and sought after lizards, such as carpet chameleons, electric blue geckos, and northern blue tongue skinks. I also make an effort to breed species which are considered difficult or impossible, such as flying lizards, in order to push our collective knowledge and experience further. I make a point to publish and share freely all of my knowledge on my own website, YouTube channel, page, and other publications such as Reptiles magazine. When you purchase an animal from me, you are also purchasing my experience, advice, and support throughout the life of the animal. This freely shared knowledge and experience that comes with each animal I produce is what sets me above and apart from much of the industry.

This week I separated the spearpoint leaf tailed gecko (Uroplatus ebenaui) pairs for a winters rest. The first one is a female which are typically more smooth in appearance. The second is a male which is a bit smaller and more jagged. This species naturally has a short pointed tail, thus the name.

The mossy leaf tailed gecko (Uroplatus sikorae) has some of the best camouflage in the animal kingdom. This nocturnal species spends its days sleeping pressed tightly to tree branches blending in with the bark and moss.

The before and after of a successful carpet chameleon (Furcifer lateralis) mating. When a male sees a female he will quickly change to his brightest colors and approach quickly bobbing his head. If the female is receptive she will assume calm and muted colors and move slowly. After mating the female will turn to darker and more dramatic colors to let the male know that she is no longer receptive and he is not welcome. I only introduce my chameleons for mating occasionally. They each have their own terrarium.

Yesterday I was grateful for the clutch of four Gallotia galloti eisentrauti that hatched out. This is the last clutch of the season for this incredibly rare species. You can see they come out of the egg very vigorous and ready to go!

Lots of well started carpet chameleons over here that are ready for new homes now! As tiny as they still are this juvenile is about four times the size of when she hatched.

A really nicely colored and patterned female spearpoint leaf tailed gecko (Uroplatus ebenaui). This is the smallest species of Madagascar’s leaf tailed geckos and they are naturally born with a short pointed tail contributing to their diminutive size.

As beautiful as this male Jackson’s chameleon looks here my phone can’t capture his true colors. I still remember the first time I saw a Jackson’s over thirty years ago and they can still elicit the same feeling of amazement all these years later.

Twelve perfect Jackson’s chameleons were born today! This species of chameleon gives live birth so the babies come out of mom fully formed and ready to take on the world. This type of Jackson’s chameleon is also special in that females can have three horns, a trait commonly associated with males.
