Sometimes you just need the most perfect ride on the most perfect boy!

What matters most in this case is that Honey felt love while she was here.

She perked up and got a light in her eyes I’m sure hadn’t been there in a very long time when she was brushed. She got fly spray, ice boots, soft ride boots, and pain meds.

Unfortunately, that has to be good enough.

Radiographs of her hoof showed extreme rotation and barely any sole between her coffin bone and the ground. We did not even make her stand for pictures of her second foot, as the first one gave us the answer we needed.

For you new/non horse people, an easy way to explain her situation is as follows:

Honey suffered from chronic, severe laminitis that had gone untreated for a long period of time. This condition, often caused by neglect, can be very difficult to fully reverse even when caught immediately and the horse receives top notch care.

Nothing about Honey’s care before she came to us was immediate or top notch.

When you look at the X-ray, the red line (coffin bone) should run parallel to the green line (hoof wall). The farther down it points, the more severe and hopeless the case becomes. Sometimes, if pain can be managed acceptably and the discrepancy in these two lines is small, an attempt to rehabilitate can be successful.

This was not the case with Honey. This mare was dangerously close to having her coffin bone pe*****te her sole (purple line). It would have been torture to attempt to rehab her.

It is also important to note that we separated our feelings from the hard medical facts. We did not say “Look at how happy she is… she wants to live!”
NO.
People need to realize that in chronic pain situations, animals (especially prey animals) often adopt the “I’m fine, everything is fine, it’s all fine” mentality to keep them from becoming an easy mark for predator.

They are not fine, and it is our job to advocate for them in that instance.

This is important, and maybe it’s the lesson to be learned from Honey. Far too often horses are “rescued” only to have their suffering continued because they get a bright spark in their eye that is anthropomorphized to their detriment. Not here. Fix it or end it.

Sometimes, the best gift we can give is a bucket of grain and a peaceful end.

Thankfully, Honey found that here.

Finally.

There were a lot of moving parts to get Honey here.
Today, she FINALLY stepped off the trailer and into our barn where she was met with care instantly.

Honey has desperately needed for a very long time, unfortunately.

Beyond being thin, beyond the urine scalds on her belly and sides, the muscle atrophy in some areas yet overdevelopment in others proves that she has been in pain without relief for a very long time. Her feet and front legs are in horrible condition due to untreated laminitis, the cause of all of her other issues.

Yet, her ears came up when we started tending to her. She came alive for that.

Her eyes softened as we were fussing over her… which we did, knowing in our hearts that help may have come too late.

Tomorrow we will learn if it is humane to attempt to rehabilitate her. Radiographs will give us clarity and determine our next or last step with Honey.

Most importantly, an acceptable level of pain management must be achieved to justify a long-term rehabilitation attempt. Additionally, after a rehabilitation, the end result must justiry the means to get her there.
Lots of factors. Lots of moving parts.

We will share an update on Honey with you tomorrow. Until then, send this little sweet mare your good energy, prayers, jingles, whatever you’ve got… She sure needs it.

These pretty girls are all breeder surrenders… which meant that once they were done making pups, away they had to go. Thankfully, they were surrendered here and we were able to get them the medical care that they needed! No love lost, ladies… now it’s THEIR turn to be the treasured ones!

They have all been spayed, are heartworm negative (and on prevention), and are on flea/tick prevention. Dentals were necessary on most, and those have been done. Eyelifts, nose jobs, you name it. They have also been vaccinated and dewormed with ongoing f***l tests done while they are here.

To say that we have had quite the journey with this horse is an understatement…from living most of his life with minimal care and training, it may not look like much in the video, but he has come a LONG way! We are now finally at the point where we feel that he is ready to find a home!

As quickly as an unscrupulous character can say “take her”… a big black dog’s life changed forever.

Meet Bailey, a 2 year old Great Dane who just arrived here at the farm. She’s in pretty rough shape, as these photos show (she’s not merle, that’s her poor skin).

While it’s safe to say we are all completely in love already, she’s got a long way to go before she will be ready for adoption.

🌸The good news? She’s safe now and will get the care that she needs here. We can’t wait to start her recovery and watch her blossom!🌸

The neglect that Bailey experienced is illegal in Ohio under ORC 959.131.
Whether her county officials decide to pursue justice for her is up to them, not us.

If I never accomplish anything else as a horseman, this will be enough.

A few nights ago we had to suddenly put one of our best horses down. To be honest, it was horrible.

It was like any other evening until I walked out to her field and saw her standing… drenched in sweat, dazed, struggling to balance.

She nickered… loudly… when she saw me.

As I rushed over to her, she made a grand effort to stagger toward me with energy she did not have.

The farm stopped. We dropped everything, called the vet and hosed her off. She kept leaning her hurting body into us, hunting for comfort she was sure we could give.

The vet came quickly and confirmed our worst suspicion. Saving Luna was not a kind option, so we said our goodbyes.

We led her out of the barn for the final time as the vet prepared her things. We told her what a unicorn she was, that she was the kindest girl who we loved so much, and that she had the prettiest doe eyes we had ever seen. We touched her face and she would melt and lean in. I kissed her nose and thanked her. Nobody was ready to say goodbye.

Now Luna is buried in a shady spot in our back pasture. As I carry on with life, I can’t help but think… this horse who was never particularly vocal called out to me when she saw me that horrible night.

In her darkest hour, she nickered at me. She looked at me and knew she could ask for help.

…and that fact hit me like a ton of bricks.

So here I stand in the barn, humbled by an old gray mare. As it turns out, the greatest compliment I’ve received as a horseman didn’t come from judges or real cowboys or Olympic riders… it came from the kindest horse I’ve ever known when she told me she knew I would be kind to her.

I realize now, if I never accomplish anything else as an equestrian, the fact that if a horse of mine knew to her core that I would help her when she desperately needed me… that will be enough.

Despite a lack of belt buckles and trophies around this place, that is surely a sign that I am doing alright.

I know this isn’t the best picture, snapped by someone over the rail as she started a lesson, but it shows Luna in her truest form just a month ago. She would just glow when she was giving lessons.

When I gave her the sad news, the mom of Luna’s littlest rider said “I’m so thankful she was yours because you could feel how much she was loved.”

We will remember Luna this way. She added such a kind energy to the farm. So many people got hooked on horses because she was their first interaction.

Luna was a gift. These hills will be less beautiful without her wandering them, no doubt.

🥳UPDATE: Ellie is pending adoption!
This yearling filly is smart, athletic, and naturally balanced. She was surrendered with her mother (who stands approximately 14.3h) and some other family members. Her father (not with us) was a thick black Quarter type stud with a nice shoulder and big hip.

Ellie is a piece of cake to catch, leads well, is tidy in a stall, and is engaging but respectful of your space.

For those looking to raise a youngster, Ellie would be a great one to consider!

They say we should work on our social media presence.

They aren’t wrong. We should be engaging our followers, posting more about what we are doing, and raising desperately needed funding so we can do more, reach more, help more. Believe me, as I work there is a critical voice in the back of my mind “you are dropping the ball on the social media presence… you are missing opportunities… you are failing…” If anyone knows we should work on our social media presence, it’s me.

To be honest, the three days that this one photo represents could have made about a dozen posts and who knows how many dollars for the rescue. So yeah, I get it.

But what if I told you that if we are missing from the bustling streets of a fleeting newsfeed…
IT’S BECAUSE WE ARE PRESENT.

Here’s the thing kids, it is hard to remember social media presence when you are fully present.

Posting online is hard to stop and do when you are grinding out an urgent game of life and death. What’s more, when you are going non-stop to throw all you’ve got at a little life, taking photos often gets abandoned completely.

What doesn’t get forgotten though is the tube feeding, oxygen, plasma, enemas, and endless snuggles… that’s the stuff going through our minds when we are present.

When I saw the small team who came together as a force to give this foal a chance, I saw a dedication and tender kindness. They were thinking of warming his blankets in the dryer, wiping his little bum to keep him clean, and helping him balance as he took his first steps unassisted. They cancelled plans and started watching the clock to keep his tube feedings on schedule. Nobody was thinking of posting on social media. Heck, we were so tired we had to tell each other when to stop and eat something for ourselves.

Still, despite grand efforts, this little foal’s body didn’t have what it takes to survive. We do take some comfort in knowing that he wanted for nothing during his short little life, and when it was evident that we were losing the battle, his suffering was not extended further. A necropsy showed that he was never going to be a healthy horse no matter the initial progress made. The loss still stung.

While we may suck at taking selfies, each person here must master a greater skill- the ability to push relentlessly for any animal in our care while constantly being sensitive to when we start losing a battle. Not extending suffering is of utmost importance here.

There is a sign in our office, “Whatever It Takes”. Our people must give one thousand percent yet simultaneously be at peace with taking it away at a moment’s notice. It is a mindset that can only be born out of genuine care, and man it’s hard on the heart.

So while we should absolutely work on our social media presence…
Trust us, we are present.

🤩Update: Maize is adopted!
Here Maize still waits for a family of her own! This sweet gal has been waiting for a home since last fall and has zero applications!

We realize that when up against the floofy doodles of the dog world, a Husky often waits around for awhile… but come on! Just look at her!

This gal is the coolest! She chills off leash with us all day on the farm, sleeps silently in a crate at night, gets along with all of the other dogs here, and isn’t very vocal. She isn’t high energy (this may be because she’s a little chonky at the moment) but keeps up with all of the activities around here! If we had to say one “meh” thing about her, it’s that she will definitely be tempted by an unattended sandwich on a coffee table… but who wouldn’t be?🤣

It’s safe to say you know more about your childhood UPS guy than we do about our new intake, now named Ranger!🤣

All we can tell you is that he is a very kind older gelding with the cutest little kissy spot on his nose and a neat Milky Way “swoosh” on his side. So far, we rate him a 10/10 for adorableness and good manners! 🏆

Jokes aside, “mystery intakes” happen here more often than not. Horses commonly arrive with zero information except “it’s a horse” and it’s our job to sort them out so eventually their new families can adopt with confidence!

For those interested in how we approach the “mystery horses”, our plan of attack generally follows the same pattern at first. Of course, the longer they are with us, the more information we can gather.

Ranger will start his time with us with some easy down time and grooming/groundwork to get comfortable with the people here. Changing farms is a big life change for horses, so we try to keep it as calm for them as possible.

Ranger will receive appropriate deworming, dental care (where we will assign him an approximate age), farrier care, and vaccinations. In Ranger’s case, he also had lice, so that was treated immediately as well. If he is not comfortable in any way we will have a lameness workup done to isolate his problem areas and address them accordingly.

New intakes are kept separated from rehabbed horses until they go through a period of time ensuring they don’t have anything left to spread. Keeping them separated also makes them easier to observe and treat. As Ranger’s medical care is brought up to date, we may discover other things that need to be addressed… or we may get lucky! He is a mixed bag of mystery at the moment, that’s for sure!

As time goes on, we will start to evaluate what Ranger knows (or doesn’t know) under saddle, taking our time to determine what sort of home he will be looking for when he is ready!

For now though, let’s all welcome Ranger to the farm!

Heyyyy you!
We’ve got an UPDATE for you!
Actually, it’s some pretty “meh” news, but here we go. If you remember, this is Gracie, the pony who came in with some issues awhile back. Now that we’ve got her sorted out medically, we wanted to update those who kindly donated to her care (which has allowed us to provide everything she needs, so THANK YOU for that).

The problems we see with Gracie all evolve around some coordination and incontinence issues in her hind end. This led to some pretty serious scalding of her back legs and bum before she came to us.

Diagnostic testing has thankfully ruled out the scary/contagious stuff (EHV-1, etc) and a physical exam points to trauma high up in her hip/pelvic area.

Now, when it comes to getting proper imaging of that area, it is always very difficult with large animals due to the density of their body. This means that it is more difficult for us to determine if this is an old injury or a new one. If it is an old injury, it is unlikely that she will heal enough that her as-is quality of life is acceptable. If it is a new injury, there is a chance for more healing and improvement.

So for the sake of transparency, this is the current game plan for little Gracie:
We will give her sufficient time to see if there are improvements to be made. If this is an old injury (some signs point to this currently), we will have to make the hard decision regarding her future and her quality of life. If at any point her pain cannot be managed, that will absolutely be the end of the road. If we see some improvement soon, we will stick with her and see how far she can go. If no improvement is seen, we will not drag this out.

So while that’s not the fuzziest news, at the moment it’s all the news that’s fit to print when it comes to this little gal. Until we sort out what’s what though, Gracie will be hanging out with her donkey friends and enjoying the sunshine with her all-you-can-eat hay buffet!

💙Update June 2024: Unfortunately, Gracie’s condition worsened gradually and we had to make the decision to let her go. While it didn’t end like we wanted it to, rest assured that she had a full belly and lots of kindness while she was with us.

“Make me an offer.”

I hate these games. I look her up and down for a minute so he could be reminded of how hurt she was. Then I threw out my offer, “I don’t know man, three hundred bucks?”

He interrupted me before I finished and said “I’ll cut her head off before I take that.”
He wanted $400.
I walked away, unbothered by his attempt to trigger a bleeding heart.

What he doesn’t know was that mine bled out years ago.

We are realistic. We know what rehabilitation costs and we know exactly how much money isn’t in the bank.

We know that if we are going to survive, we have to keep dollars and cents at the forefront of our minds. This means lots of picking and choosing. This means lots of saying “no” to horses like this, unfortunately.

So I walked away from that old mare who had scars across her body proving that she had worked for humans her whole life. Humans owed her a pension, yet here she was.

We weren’t going to buy her. We already had two on the trailer who needed extensive rehabilitations. We could foresee the dollars and cents that we would be spending on them in the weeks ahead.

We also knew that if we didn’t buy this old Belgian mare he would load her back up with his others and take her to his next auction.

We knew that along the way she would continue to get battered and broken. She would snag hay and water whenever she had a chance, if she had a chance. She would only get skinnier, sicker, and more hurt as she went.

I’m no bleeding heart, but my heart hurts for these low-end dealer horses.

I went and counted the cash I had back at the truck. I walked back in and paid him his $400. It was just dollars and cents, she mattered more. He flashed a smile and said something about how it was a pleasure doing business with me again. I bet.

With her left eye swollen shut, she followed me quietly to our trailer. She loaded up like a lady without hesitation and began munching hay next to the others we saved.

We rescued these ladydonks back in 2021 and they were adopted by a loving family. Unfortunately they are being relocated and the donkeys could not go with them, so the family honored their adoption contract and returned them to us so we could find their new home!

While Anna was with us, we were in the process of figuring out her allergies, which had improved significantly since we got her. Young dogs with allergies tend to scare potential adopters, but the Urey family already had a Welsh Terrier with allergies (who wears adorable PJs) just like Anna- it was meant to be! This dog went from a puppy mill reject, to a very spoiled and loved family member and we couldn’t be happier❤️

We’re so happy and excited for Anna! We’ve been getting updates on how she’s settling, and she blends right in❤️ Yay Anna!

For a long time, we have wanted a hay steamer but the cost has been prohibitive. Steaming hay is beneficial for horses with allergies, horses that can’t chew regular hay, and horses with COPD.

Upon hearing of our desire to steam hay, two of our wonderful supporters, the Garees, made this snazzy hay steamer and brought it down to us!
You know the saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention”… and we’ve got to say, this invention is one that we are very excited about!

It would have been easier to take her to the auction in the morning.

A local gentleman took this pony and the person that gave her to him didn’t disclose that she was sick and injured. He tried his best to do right by her once he discovered her issues, but on a string of bad luck himself, he called us and asked if we could take her so she could get the care she needed.

Tomorrow is an auction day. He could have washed her up, medicated her, saddled her up, and made a thousand bucks or so.

But he didn’t.
He called us instead.

“Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age, but I didn’t want to do that to her”, he said.

Maybe so… but thank you for giving us the chance to help.

Here they are, ready to find homes! 🥳 They have all been spayed, are heartworm negative (and on prevention), and are on flea/tick prevention. Dentals were necessary on most, and those have been done. Eyelifts, nose jobs, you name it. They have also been vaccinated and dewormed with ongoing fecal tests done while they are here. Vidalia went through quite a lengthy rehab here before this moment… where she is ready for adoption! She has been hanging out with our friends blazing trails and dabbling in play day events! This mare isn’t a speed racer but would love to mosey along with your kids on the trail. She’s a solid little lady with an “ears up” personality! Maize

Not long ago we were at the spay/neuter clinic with several of our dogs when someone asked where those particular dogs came from. We explained that the dogs were retired breeding dogs surrendered from mills. We never buy the dogs and feed the breeders’ profit, rather the breeders agree to give the dogs to us for free instead of disposing of them on their own. Someone then asked “but how does that really help?” Zack looked at the woman and said “I’ll show you a dog who has lived it’s entire life locked in a concrete kennel, and when you watch it touch and play in the grass for the first time, you can tell me how we are helping.” So while Ohio law still keeps our state a haven for commercial breeders who discard their dogs after they don’t produce well enough for them, we are confident in the part we play by helping the mill dogs. After all, there are plenty of people who are fighting to change the laws… lawyers and lobbyists and the like… so those of us with the rehab and training experience can be the boots on the ground. That is where WE can make the biggest difference. Just ask Maize, one of our newest intakes! Maize has a vet appointment and is set to be spayed and have a mass biopsied/removed from her shoulder soon! Until then, “extra butt scratches” are just what the doctor ordered! After her vetting she will be ready to be adopted so… you guessed it… we have space to help another one. Help the helpers. Donate, foster, adopt.

As I loaded a mare we all love onto this trailer, all I could think was “this is what we’ve been waiting for for so long…” Four years ago, Jackie was one of eight that we took from a massive case in West Virginia. After a lengthy legal battle, the horses were finally awarded to us. Branded from her shoulder to her buttcheeks, Jackie was the product of a ranch out west, one of those programs that put a bunch of babies on the ground every year, keep the best, and sell the rest at their production sales. She was sold as a baby. Unfortunately, after that auction she landed in the hands of a psychopath. Abused in barbaric ways that we won’t share here, she was eventually left to starve with dozens of other horses and a large herd of cattle. We caught what we could the day we went, passing bones and bodies in an attempt to salvage the living. After her physical recovery, we started handling and training her. It soon became clear that Jackie’s brain was blown up, her mind was just cooked. When we would try to communicate with her, her eyes would glaze over and she would attempt an explosive escape. She was a hard one who tested me as a trainer, no doubt. Truthfully, Jackie elevated my game and made me a better horse person. We dedicated hundreds upon hundreds of hours to working with Jackie to see if she could be salvaged. An anxious life of not being comfortable in your own skin is no life. We simply tried to teach her to slow her brain down and breathe, and just TRY before clicking out and going into self preservation mode. She eventually started trying and started trusting… but just us. She was still broken for strangers, and that was unfortunate. We took her to an expo in 2022 in the hopes that we could find her a home. Nope. Plenty of people were attracted to her cute face and brands, but it just didn’t feel right. We came so far with Jackie and had waited for so long, we didn’t mind hauling her home after that event. We eventually resigne
