Come make puppy mash with me! 😋🐾 Usually when the puppies are between three and four weeks old, we begin transitioning them from mother’s milk to their puppy food. This transitional food is called “puppy mash” because it’s their mashed up puppy kibble mixed with milk replacer. These six-week-old #bernedoodlepuppies make it look easy! They are “manding” before getting fed. Normally before feeding time, puppies can be very impatient, jumping and barking and not able to settle. But through #puppyculture we teach them to sit and make eye contact when they want something instead. It redirects their energy and teaches them patience and self-control. Their forever families can keep this up with them at home by requiring that they sit and give eye contact before getting pets, picked up, or given their meal or treats. You CAN have a patient pup! Pepper is a pro! 🤩These puppies make it look so easy at five weeks old, but what puppies tend to do is jump all over you, with no self-control, when they want something. That is the their natural, inherited mode of communication. We have to reset that. Manding is teaching the puppy to instead sit and look at you when they want something. Natasha is a good balance of playfulness and thoughtfulness/intelligence. She was silly for the first couple of minutes of our session, which is to be expected, and then locked in on those treats, demonstrating patience and self control—at just 5 weeks old! What a difference a day makes and proof of how one-on-one training sessions with puppies as young as five weeks can build their confidence. Yesterday Wanda was a bit shy and unsure. Today she was playful, fun, and engaging. Once that was all out of her system, she really caught on to what I wanted.
