Exciting times abound in our produce department! We are proud to announce our newest local partnership with Urban Greens!
Located in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, Urban Greens is an urban hydroponics farm that grows herbs and micro greens year round! Founded by two friends, Joel Love and Andrew Rescorla in 2017, they wanted to put their shared interests of Community and Food into one business that also focused on a key aspect that is often lost in the modern food chain—Sustainability. Urban Greens wants to bridge the divide between consumers and the people that grow their food. As Joel states on their website: “Urban farming has the unique opportunity to restore the relationships between consumer and producer, and relationships are what strengthen our community.” With Urban Greens, the herbs and greens used in your recipes can be traced back to the producer easily and they will readily talk with you to answer any questions you have.
From our end, it’s not only important to support local businesses and people, but also important to make sure our customers are receiving the highest quality product that we can offer them. Most people may not know this, but a lot of our herbs, such as Basil, Mint, Dill, Chives, and Parsley are sourced from farms in South America such as Colombia. The herbs are picked and shipped 3,000 miles to our produce supplier’s warehouse here in Minnesota and then shipped to us. With Urban Greens, our herbs are now picked fresh, packed, and delivered to us from their urban farm only 12 minutes from our store. So instead of sourcing herbs from countries thousands of miles away, we now source herbs like Basil, Mint, Chives, and Dill from a farm mere minutes away. We can guarantee that you are using the freshest, most flavorful, Minnesota Grown herbs year round.
