LONGEST STAY - 100+ DAYS :'( A private donor has graciously offered to pay $250 to the New Hope partner that pulls Roxanne. Also, a $500 stipend will be offered to the New Hope partner that pulls Roxanne. Please note that in order to qualify for the stipend, the animal cannot go to a boarding facility. ($750).

ROXANNE'S IS OUT OF TIME. IT'S NOT A GAME. She really needs a legit hero and she needs him/her NOW. Roxanne won't get another chance. Not only is she beautiful but she's very loving and affectionate. Roxanne is also a very resilient girl. She's also been playful with other dogs and has joined a playgroup multiple times. After 100 PLUS days at the shelter this girl is still just as sweet and endearing. Of course she's going to need time to decompress. That goes without saying. But more than anything she needs a dedicated foster or adopter to step up and help her before it's too late.

ROXANNE@BROOKLYN ACC
Hello, my name is Roxanne. My animal id is #138504. I am a female fawn brindle dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/15/2022, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

AGE: About 2 years 1 month old
WEIGHT: 68.2 lbbs
BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: Rescue Only

Roxanne is on emergency placement for behavior concerns. Roxanne has recently begun to display a higher level of reactivity (hard barking, growling) towards strangers in kennel and out. Medically, Roxanne is apparently healthy.

Due to the detailed behavior issues, this animal is only available for foster/adoption through one of ACC's New Hope Partners. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please fill out the pre-screener form. This animal is not directly available for adoption through ACC and is only available by completing the pre-screener form. Adoption inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response.

Roxanne arrived at the care center from her previous home. Some behavioral concerns were noted in the home - Roxanne would begin to growl, bark, and snap when approached by a select adult and child family members. She is reported to growl when in possession of treats and has begun to growl and snap when offered food. In the care center, Roxanne has appeared a bit tentative and uncomfortable with direct touch, often flinching away. However, she has allowed leashing and has displayed some brief interest in socializing with select familiar handlers.
Roxanne should be placed under the guidance of an ACC-approved rescue partner. An adult-only, experienced foster home is required and Roxanne should be allowed a period of decompression. Assistance from a behavior professional who utilizes positive reinforcement methods is strongly advised.

A SHELTER VOLUNTEER WRITES: When I look at Luna, I see an oversized puppy. In fact, she is only 11 months and has spent 2 of those 11 months in the Brooklyn shelter. I love the baby pink undertones around her eyes and snoot, and her sweet face. Any time I pass her kennel I usually find her sitting up front, patiently and quietly watching everyone who passes her by. In spite of her 60lbs, she looks like a baby to me and has puppyish ways about her still. She has bouts of playful energy, loves to snuggle with people she knows, and eats a hamburger we feed her so gently we ooh and ahh while she nibbles bites from our hands.

Luna was originally surrendered due to a move into a home whose landlord didn't welcome her. She had originally lived with 4 young kids she reportedly did well with. Her original family said she was initially shy with new people but warms up

Luna initially came into the care center as an owner surrender and then spent some time in an adopter's home before being returned due to a bite incident in the home. In her original owner's home, she lived with three adults and four young children. The owner described her to be initially shy and once she warmed up, would play somewhat rough. With the children in the home, she was described to be relaxed, playful, and respectful. In the adopter's home, she lived with two adults and two older children. The adopter noted that Luna would hard bark and lunge at strangers and animals including cats and dogs. With the children in the home, she was usually tolerant but was noted to growl and hard bark. The adopter states that Luna has redirected while reacting to dogs on the street and will growl when told "no". In the most recent bite incident, the owner's son tried to move her face away while reacting and his hand got into her mouth and she bit down. Due to the behavior concerns, we recommend that Luna goes to a single-pet, adult-only home through a New Hope Partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based training.

Summary:: According to Luna's previous owner, she was not introduced to other dogs while in their care. So her past behavior with other dogs is unknown.

4/21: When off leash at the Care Center, Luna is introduced to a novel male dog. She is fearful and reluctant to approach but does with coaxing from handlers. Luna remains fearful as she greets the male then quickly scurries away.

Summary (2):: 8/12/22 Upon approaching Luna in the kennel, she is jumping up at the front, barking. She is easily leashed and walked out, she pulls hard all the way outside. As we pass another dog, Luna begins fixating and lunging toward them, she is unable to be readily refocused. After her walk, she is then brought into the yard where she engages with toy items, zooming around the yard. Luna engages in fetch with the handler, readily trading. Throughout the session, Luna jumps up onto the handler exuberantly to seek attention. After some time, she is easily leashed and returned to the kennel without issue.

8/10/22: On her way back from a relief walk, Luna is dropped off in the assessment room by a staff member. She runs into the room and jumps on handlers with a wagging tail and wiggly body. She is exuberant and high energy, mouthing with no pressure. She sits down and takes a long-lasting chew gently from the handler, carrying it around for a minute before laying down to chew on it. She spends the duration of her time in the room working on the chew until it's gone, checking in with handler periodically to wag and solicit petting with a loose body. After she finishes her treat, the handler offers her a handful of tennis balls which she rolls and chases around on her own, again, checking in with handlers by running over and jumping on them to briefly accept petting. After some time, she allows handlers to adjust her collar while taking treats before they re-leash her to return her to kennel. She enters without issue.

8/1: Luna becomes visibly anxious in her kennel. She alternates between banging on her transfer door and jumping to the top of her kennel repeatedly.

7/27: Staff reported that Luna persistently bangs on her kennel door.

7/19/22: Luna is sitting in the front of her kennel with a soft face and body when the handler approaches. She sees handler and stands, becoming loose and wiggly. She allows for easy leashing and exits the room without issue. She is led to the assessment room where she runs back and forth between the two present handlers, jumping on them soliciting attention and petting. She leans into petting eagerly when offered. Handler gives her a bully stick and she lays down and chews it for quite some time until it's finished. She then engages eagerly with spray cheese than handler applies to a rubber nylabone. She checks in with handler for attention once she finishes it and allows easy re-leasing, returning to kennel without issue.

Summary (3):: 6/15: Luna was at the front of her kennel with a loose body. She presses and rubs herself against the bars as the door is unlocked. Luna is easily leashed but once she exits the kennel, she rushes toward one of the neighboring dogs while grumbling. The handler keeps her on a short lead and quickly moves towards the exit but she continues to attempt to reach around the handler to reach the other dogs. Once out in the hallway, Luna jumps up on the handler twice to seek attention. The handler walks Luna to the play yard and she pulls hard on the lead. Upon entering the yard, Luna sees another dog/handler pair in the first pen. She attempts to rush towards the pen but is unsuccessful due to the handler still having her on a short lead. Luna quickly walked past the first pen and put it into the third. She remains fixated on the dog/pen area but the handler is able to refocus her with treats as the other dog exits the yard. Once the other dog leaves, Luna is let off leash and she races around the pen before returning to jump on the bench and rub her body along the handler's chest and lap, seeking attention and more treats. Towards the end of the session, another handler approaches the pen with a dog from the lot to ask the first handler a question. The first handler quickly picks up the drag leash and uses treats to refocus her. Luna screeches once but otherwise accept the trets. Luna is then leashed and returns to her kennel without issue.

6/8/22: Luna is at the front of the kennel with a loose and wiggly body. She is easily leashed and taken outside where she pulls toward different staff members with a loose body. Once outside, she is placed on a drag leash and she jumps up on the handler socially. She then jumps up on the play area platform and sits on cue for treats. Handler calls her over and she goes with a soft body and allows all petting. She is brought back inside without issue.

5/12: Luna was at the front of her kennel when approached. She is initially hesitant but otherwise leashed easily. She is taken to the play yard and she greets two handlers with a loose wiggly body. Luna is tolerant of being collared and having a drag leash attached. Once off-leash, Luna races through the pens, exploring. Luna alternates between seeking attention from both handlers and seeking treats for the duration of the session. Once the session is over, Luna returns to her kennel without issue.

Date of intake:: 4/20/2022

Summary:: Nervous, tolerated handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Luna is described as having a medium level of activity.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 7/19/22 Luna has been observed to run into the kennel transfer door of the neighboring dog behind her and hit it very hard with her body as well as dig at it with her paws. When handlers approach her in this state she softens and recovers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner,No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children:: Due to Luna's reactivity and bite history, we recommend an adult only home.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Luna be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Luna to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Luna to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Luna presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Bite history (human),On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Luna is reported to have accidents in the home. Please see handout on House Soiling.

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Luna is reported to lunge and bark at strangers and to growl and bark at the teenages in the home. She will need a very slow approach and positive reinforcement behavior modification to work with her around new people. Please see handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression.

Bite history (human): Luna bit the 16 year old in the hom when he was walking her. Luna was lunging and hard barking at a dog and the person pushed her face away. Luna bit down on his wrist, resulting in scratches. Please see handout on Bite History.

On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Luna is reported to be reactive to people and dogs, lunging and hard barking at them when on walks. When her walker attempted to move her head away while reacting, she bit him, showing she may have a potential to redirect this reactivity onto the handler. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.

A volunteer writes, "Roxanne was such a pleasant surprise today at the shelter. She has been around at ACC for over a month and we have greeted her through kennel doors, but we are now allowed to walk Roxanne. And what a joy she is to walk. First, she stops to say hi to a staff member who is also her total BFF. After some wiggly wagging butt scratches, and a hug or two, Roxanne makes her way down the street. We can tell that she has an ant in her pants kind of vibe that always makes us think we should head to the yard to play! And that is exactly what Roxanne needs. She gets 3 of our stuffies and loves to leap around the yard at them. She grabs one and throws her head around like a bucking bronco having the time of her life. Her fun time playing results in her bringing out her giant happy smile! Roxanne has a beautiful brindle coat, white splotches, and white tips on her toes! She told me that the white tips on her toes make her bounce around better and faster like moon shoes. Roxanne has been playful with other dogs and has joined a playgroup multiple times. She will need a decompression and adjustment period when going to a new home and is available to new hope rescue

Summary:: Friendly, allowed handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the potential for defensive aggression, we feel as though Roxanne would be best set up to succeed if placed into an adult only home environment.

Place with a New Hope partner: Roxanne is reported to growl, hard bark and snap at one of the owners in the home. In the care center she has shown some moderately social behavior, however, remains uncomfortable with most forms of direct touch (stiffens, whale eyes, head flipping). Roxanne is also observed to flinch and jump away from most loud noises and sudden movements. For these reasons, we recommend placement with an experienced rescue partner. Force-free, reward based training only.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression

Potential challenges comments:: Roxanne is reported to growl, bark and snap at one of the owners in her previous home, please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
