Are you familiar with Simona Kossak? She wasn’t just an ecologist. She was a warrior.

Her efforts to protect lynxes and wolves from illegal trapping put her at odds with academic researchers and sparked a host of legal battles.

But Simona's work brought attention to the plight of endangered species in Poland.

And her extraordinary connection with animals went beyond observation; she was accepted as part of their world.

For over 30 years, Simona lived in a wooden hut deep within the Białowieża Forest, Europe’s oldest forest, without electricity or running water. Her companions were wild animals — a lynx shared her bed and so did a boar named Żabka. She fed deer and was friends with a mischievous crow known for stealing valuables and terrorizing locals.

However, for Simona, the forest was more than a home — it was a mission and a testament to the possibility of coexistence between humans and the wild.

Sadly, she died in 2007 at the age of 63.
