Happy Wildlife Wednesday!
We had a friendly visitor hunting for lizards in our front lawn, and yes it was successful in catching a few!
This is a Great White Egret (not to be mistaken for a Great White Heron) is a large white bird that can reach a height of about 4 feet, they have a long yellowish/orange bill and long black legs (Great Herons have much lighter legs) and they are a little smaller then a Heron. They live in freshwater, brackish, and marine wetlands and are common through much of the United States, as well as Central and South America, Africa, Australia, Asia, and some parts of Europe.
They stalk their prey by slowly walking or standing motionless in the shallows and forage with their webbed feet, taking, and probing the bottom, and snapping up fish in a matter of milliseconds with their quick bill reflex. In addition to fish, their diet includes invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, or other birds, and small mammals.
