We’re AKC and OFA certified and voluntarily genetically test our breeding dogs. When I was a young girl my dad would take me to the pound every week to look at the dogs. I would tell him that all I wanted to do was look at them and pet them and then one day I couldn't just look any longer. I begged and pleaded with him to let me have one of my own and he and my mom finally gave in. Our first dog,

Willow, was an American Golden Retriever and I fell in love. My parents wound up breeding her with a grand champion out of northern Colorado. Out of her two litters, we kept one of her puppies and named her Sheba. I was a big part of training our girls and helping with the three litters I got to experience growing up. My dad owned a dog training business as well that I helped him with when I was in junior high and high school. Dogs have always been a big part of my life, even before I owned one! I was the girl who brought home strays and made sure they got home safe and sound. I adopted my Border Collie Zig 8 years ago and he has been one of my favorites! I love hearing of sweet adoption stories and it equally breaks my heart when I hear of dogs with terrible diseases or genetic problems due to poor breeding. I decided to become a breeder of English Cream Golden Retrievers because first off, I love the breed. Second, I want to provide families and people with great, healthy dogs that will give them a lifetime of wonderful memories. I am a wife to a hardworking, wonderful farmer. We live out in the northeastern plains on a small farm. We raise black angus cattle and also have goats, cats, ducks, a horse and our two dogs, Pearl and Zig. We have 3 amazing kids, who keep us busy! We love our peaceful piece of paradise out here and God has blessed us very much!

There has been some evidence in veterinary medicine that certain breeds, in particular herding breeds, are sensitive to ivermectin and some other medications if they contain the MDR1 gene. The main reported effect is due to neurotoxicity. To be sure, I am not clear on the exact truth in this, but if...

A message from dr. Judy concerning the new respiratory illness in dogs….

Hi Everyone,

I know that many of you have been hearing about the new respiratory condition reportedly spreading in dogs in some areas of the US. I thought that I would give you my recommendations on how to keep your dogs healthy and safe.

First and most importantly, do not panic. Whenever I hear one of these new conditions come to the surface, I am always careful to look at the actual data coming out. In this case, it is my understanding that fatalities are quite rare. In most cases like this, it is the already compromised individuals that are likely to get seriously ill. Otherwise healthy pets should get over this condition without incident. Think about the flu season in people. Most everyone gets by with a few days in bed, and only the elderly or those with other health conditions get seriously ill.

If you are working with us, then you are already doing much more than the average pet parent to keep your dog healthy. Fresh food feeding and minimizing vaccines and other pharmaceuticals are setting your dog up for minimal consequences with this or any other exposure. Remember the fact that the best defense your dog has is a powerful immune system, and if you are following our recommendations, then your dog will have a very strong ability to handle this new condition. So far, we have not had any of our clients report having a sick dog. Remember that the majority of dogs are still eating kibble, and receiving excessive amounts of vaccines and other pharmaceuticals, all of which is weakening their immune systems.
Here are some tips to keep your dog’s immune system strong:

Be sure that the diet is clean, fresh, whole-food, and species-appropriate. This is not a time to cut corners on quality.
Medicinal mushroom blends such as Healthy Pet Immune from Mushroom matrix, or other quality blend.
Algae supplements provide important trace nutrients. Phytosynergy from Adored Beast is a good choice here.
This is a busy time of year, but be sure that your pet still gets outside for plenty of fresh air and exercise.
If your dog is showing any symptoms:

Be sure it is still eating and drinking normally
Clean eyes and nose of any crusts
Diffusing essential oils such as eucalyptus, tea tree, On Guard(doTerra), or Thieves(Young Living) will help support respiratory immunity
If you are in a dry climate, I would suggest humidifying the air if possible
If you do need to board your dog or you take your dog to daycare. I would ask if they are screening their customers to determine if other dogs are showing any symptoms.

What NOT to DO:

Avoid antibiotics early on in the course of this. It is most likely not bacterial and the medications will only further weaken your dog’s immune system
Do NOT give unnecessary vaccinations. If you dog is in good health, extra vaccinations will also weaken its immune system.
From what I can see, this is like you or I getting a cough or cold and is not likely a major medical concern. Remember all you are doing to already keep your dog healthy. This is keeping it way ahead of the curve when it comes to staying healthy.

Lastly, there is absolutely no indication that this can spread to humans or other animals so there is no reason to isolate your dog from other members of your household.

If you dog is showing symptoms, please contact us for a consultation.

All the Best in Health,

Dr. Judy and the AHA Team
