Farewell sweet Bean.

I don’t like to make a habit of posting every time we suffer a loss of a bird. For one, I don’t get any joy out of the attention that comes from it. Second, loss is just part of our job as a rescue, very sadly. We make them comfortable until their time comes for them to cross the rainbow bridge.

But I do want to acknowledge Bean because he was very special in our house. Bean was our first ever “big bird” alongside Chico, and began what would blossom into a love for amazons of all sorts. He was always a bit of a moody bald fellow but nevertheless he lit up our home with his morning hooting for whatever he had decided was the desired fruit of the season. Though he looked rough, he had a way of making himself known and by god did the house operate at his command at breakfast time. Something about his charming little self struck quite the chord with the lady zons and brought out the beast in Jasper who would protect him from the wretched cage cleaning towel. When P was still with us, he did all in his power to impress her while he could still see, and even after they clung together despite bickering like an old couple from time to time. In wake of her passing he grew a new family, and he passed in a cage surrounded by his own kind, his favourite treats, and an array of toys to chew.

Bean lived a hard life before us and is a shining example of the horrors of the exotic pet trade. But Bean’s life was not characterised by suffering or pain. He sure bore evidence of his past in his appearance, but nevertheless woke up each day singing and shouting, going about his usual routine of patrolling the cage floors and flinging about his wicker balls, and bathing to the sound of the vacuum. He began his life wild and free and ended his life among his own kind, in charge of the living room, and catered to at his every beck and call. He got to feel the world when he couldn’t see it anymore, and got to see it when his eyes were still good from atop the ladder of his baby stroller.

We love and miss you Bean, but we are so thankful for the 3 years we spent together. We will never forget your morning calls or sweet whistles. Rest easy now, little old man.

A brand new home for three special birds! Though normally we would not house three amazons together, these guys are unique in that two of them are disabled, and all of them are friends. Bean, our bald guy, is blind and only utilises the very bottom of his cage. He has his very own food and water as well as toys to keep him busy. Jasper roams a bit, but likes to pick only a few spots due to his bad foot. And Phoebe is just normal Phoebe, but she’s happy to share!

Hello Rio’s Roost family.

We are so sorry for our absence these last few months of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. It was a rough end of the year for us- we sadly lost our beloved Mrs. P rather suddenly to a presumed heart attack and were not ready to share her passing and relive that memory for some time. Now, we see it fit to let you all know, and to share what else is new in the roost.

Mrs. P was such a light in our home for the two years we had her, which was just a blip in her 40 years of life. She was so sweet and uniquely herself in a way no other bird can compare to. Not only did she touch our human family, but she touched our feathered family too. Losing Mrs. P has been hard on all of us, but in her wake, we have decided not to let her legacy be forgotten, but to instead carry out what more life she should have lived to give homes to others of her kind in need- just as she once was.

Meet Phoebe and Jasper, our two newest additions to the forever flock. Phoebe is 10, and Jasper is 28. Both of these beautiful little souls have been given a second shot at life our under wings in honour of Mrs. P- who would have been so happy to have two new friends to holler with. Phoebe and Jasper both lived amazing lives up until now, but had to move on due to troubles in the lives of their people. These guys were so lucky to receive so much love from the time they were babies into adulthood, a blessing which was not always afforded to Mrs. P.

We don’t want Mrs. P’s memory to be lost to time, and hope that one day Jasper, Phoebe, and the rest of our flock can spread joy and smiles the way P did when she was here. Nobody will ever be Mrs. P, and no amount of OWAs will fill the hole in our hearts she left behind, but in her wake we hope to open our home as sanctuary to those who could use what we learned from her to live their best lives.

We will be back to posting regularly from now on and hope to share the rest of our birds’ lives with you!

Look at that feather quality improvement! Since joining us in July, Mimi has stopped plucking and barbering entirely. She is on her way to being fully feathered now after going through quite the rough moult.

Witkin is still in search of his forever home! He’s very spunky, loves to eat and play, and would make an excellent single bird or addition to a flock of other small to medium birds. He is great with women and takes an interest in other birds his size and smaller, but gets along well with our larger roost members. To learn more about Witkin and apply to adopt him, visit riosroost.com!

More shots of our little birds! Budgies love flocking and hanging out in groups. In our bird room, giving these guys lots of space and many choices in partners and friends helps them stay happy, healthy, and well socialised not only with one another, but with people as well. Though our budgies are not tame, they feed off of the reactions of one another to gauge whether or not we are safe to approach and what level of a threat we pose. Our birds might not know how to step up, but they know from interacting with each other that people bring food and can sometimes be good perches.

The little bird room flock continues to flourish and do great! How many budgies can you count?
