In the small city of Skagway, there's a one-of-a-kind bus service, that is designed for a very particular type of customer — puppies.

How’s your hound’s diet? We are posting this because in the last three months TWO of our beloved hikers have been diagnosed with life threatening diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) that has been linked to grain-free diets. We are not vets so please do your own research/talk to your vet, this is just to bring awareness to the ingredients you are feeding your best friends ❤️
It’s not too late to switch diets, DCM is preventable!

UPDATE: Old Dog Haven Home FOUND!!

Dear Friends,

We have been asked by our dog team to do another post of Bella who desperately needs a home near a surgeon who could fix her ears. If we can find a home to send her to, ALL of her vet bills will be covered by our organization.

What we are told about her is that she does OK with mellow dogs and doesn't seem interested in cats. She is spayed, and weighs 80 pounds.

She is a very nice girl who is deaf from too many painful ear infections. She is mobile, good on a leash, and very cuddly.

Unfortunately she has been passed around between a few homes, We are told she is housebroken and a quiet girl to live with. She needs a home that can get her the care she needs to remove this constant pain.

If you live in either W. Washington state or Portland, OR and you'd like to offer this girl her forever home as an Old Dog Haven Final Refuge dog, please read through the link below and contact us:

Sadly, the signs (and the dog inside) on this dog kennel at our Division Street shelter are becoming far too frequent at WHS as we continue to see an increase in the number of dogs being surrendered to our shelter with serious and dangerous aggression, behavior and temperament issues. As an open-admission shelter (no animal turned away) and the animal control provider for the majority of Whatcom County, our incredible staff continue to be tested and stressed to the max daily.

How can you, the community help? Here are a few ways:
× Don't buy/adopt animals from back yard breeders or pet stores.
× Don't import/adopt animals from out of state "rescue organizations" unless you have researched these groups and they can provide complete health records, behavior evaluations and other informations necessary to know the animals history.
× Properly socialize your dogs with people and other animals.
× Train your dog using ONLY positive, reward based training methods -ie: affection NOT correction. DO NOT support trainers that use punishment based training methods.

AND ... support your local animal shelter staff and volunteers ...for their tireless work and dedication - and for doing jobs that are difficult on good days and incredibly difficult and awful on bad days.

Note: the dog housed in this kennel had to be humanely euthanized due to his aggression, temperament, multiple bite history and the liability of placing him back into the community.

We made the hard decision to cancel hikes the rest of the week. We have over a foot of snow (more on the way) and it's not safe on the roads to get up here. Have a safe, healthy and warm New Years with your hounds!
We will see you in 2022!

We will be picking up food donations from clients over the next two weeks (during scheduled pick ups). Donations need to be labeled: “Trail Hounds Humane Society Donation.” Just leave next to your dog’s leash and we will deliver to the Whatcom Humane Society!
Let’s restock these shelves!

Small Group Hiking for the Hounds of Bellingham

Dogs belong outside! And we love dogs! We want your dog to feel the freedom of adventuring on the trails while you’re busy “doing life.” Let us take your dog on a daily exploration on our local mountain and get the stimulation they need so they can live their best life. They will thank you!
