Now that the puppies can see and hear, they’ve entered the critical socialization period. We strive to give them a new experience every day. One of the ways we do that is to allow safe, trusted visitors to come in and snuggle pups. By the time this litter is ready to go home, they will have interactions with 75-100 different people.

At 18 days, the puppies are starting to plump up as their relaxed mama spends long periods in the whelping box nursing them.

Just a few days old, these puppies are already being handled by immediate, trusted family members. The mom is super comfortable with this child and uses the very brief respite to potty and eat.

It’s day 3 of these new puppies’ lives. Since the whelping was uneventful and the mom has provided excellent maternal care, this breeder opted to do Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). ENS is a set of gentle stressors performed on puppies from days 3-16. Studies have shown that ENS may help develop the puppies’ neurological systems and have better coping mechanisms when they encounter stress later in life.

Mom has done a great job of cleaning the puppies, nursing them, and keeping them warm. Breeders can support the mom by offering her gentle reassurance, plenty of water, as much high-quality food as she wants, and keeping the whelping room quiet. Some breeders take a very hands-on approach while others just keep a watchful eye on the litter, especially if the mom is experienced.

You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at everything an ethical breeder does to provide you with the best possible. As the whelping date nears, the breeder often takes the mama in for an X-ray to determine how many puppies to expect. Bones calcify about a week before the pups are due, making it easy to count skulls and spines. How many is this mom expecting?

Following along as one of our COE breeders takes you in a journey from preconception to 10 weeks! Meet the sire and dam. They were carefully matched after examining pedigrees and consulting with the experts at Embark to produce the healthiest puppies possible. Both parents are well-cared for in their respective homes and have a brucellosis test done before breeding. After breeding, they wait for signs of pregnancy. Some breeders opt to do an ultrasound at 4 weeks post breeding but others choose to wait for an X-ray closer to time.

We haven’t done this in a while and with so many new followers, we thought now would be a good time to tell you about us.

We are the Malagasy Coton Preservation Club and we represent a number of breeders across two continents and three countries. All of our breeders are MCPC members who own dogs that have undergone rigorous health screenings in addition to being genetically tested with Embark. Our litters are carefully planned to improve our breed’s health and longevity. Our goal is to help preserve this amazing breed by using all the tools and resources now available to do so including the latest research and health testing.
