Give Thanks not just on Thanksgiving Day, but every day of your life. Something I can struggle with when s**t is really rough… and truthfully, life’s stressors and adulthood have been creeping up HARD lately and trying it’s damned hardest to break us. But with every hardship is a blessing around the corner and this Thanksgiving has been no different! We celebrated, cooked & ate our little hearts out, cuddled and watched lots of Christmas movies, and thoroughly enjoyed our first holiday with just the 3 of us. It was quiet, and calm, and the biggest drama of the day was when Kylin dumped over the entire bowl of freshly baked warm cookies all over the counter… 😂 wouldn’t be a holiday without some form of chaos. Happy Thanksgiving Week to All, grateful for each of you who chooses to follow our farming family journey, we love you all!📸

🐥🐥🐥 These quail eggs took 23 days to hatch, when they normally hatch between day 16-18, figure me that? I’ve hatched so many chicks and ducks I likely could never recall them all but this was my first time incubating quail eggs all the way to hatch and these peeps had me second guessing if I was going to get any to hatch but I stayed patient and we ended up getting 10 little cuties from this incubation, resulting in a pretty poor hatch rate of around 30% but considering they were shipped from an Amazon seller and nearly all came with some level of crack/damage, I’m kind of surprised we got any to hatch at all!

What other candling question’s might you have, leave them down below.

More kids scheduled to drop this weekend! Miss Moo is a week out so it’s time to move her into the kidding pen and move Dulce, Truffle & their mama Petunia back to the main pen with the rest of the crew. Babies can come a few days early or a few days late so planning about a week out is usually a good time to move my expecting doe’s and yep, mine are extremely food motivated too, so I find the easiest way to move them is by bribing them with some good ol’ tasty pellets.

Goats are such herd animals and need to be able to socialize with other goats, so I keep the kidding pen right next to the doe pen, sharing a small fence, so that my expecting mothers can birth in a peaceful area but still be able to see and socialize with their sisters. This gives them the space to birth with minimal disturbance, to bond well with their babies, and to keep their babies safe from the other doe’s until they are big/fast enough to get away from their ornery behaviors.

Miss Moo’s ligaments are softening (meaning she’s starting to open up and ready herself for birthing), her udder is filling more each day and summer kidding season is well on its way, with 5 more doe’s due at various times over August and September, including Ruth, Periwinkle, Pixie, Espirit and Kami. 💙 Here we go!

Farm life can be challenging enough but finding someone willing to watch your farm when you go on vacation can be so tough. Especially when you have a farm like ours, with chicks damn near constantly in a million different cages, goat kids being born all throughout the year, doe’s that have to be miked daily, over 25 goats and over 100 chickens to feed everyday… Its a lot to take on and we are extremely fortunate to have such wonderful friends here in town who have a similar farm as ours. They watch our place and we watch theirs and it’s a wonderful symbiotic relationship!

How does it all work? Well, there are specific things we do to make their life easier while we are gone, like lots of automatic waterers for nearly all the animals, large feeders that don’t need to be filled daily, etc. And even though they have their own farm, we also don’t expect our farm sitters to just guess on how to care for all our animals either and we will either go over each animal in detail together or we will leave a detailed “job aid” to go over each animals care, where to find their food, any special care notes etc. so that they are completely set up for success while we are gone.

Many people have the idea in mind that if you have a farm you can’t ever leave it… but I’m a “have your cake and eat it too” type of gal and I really want my raw milk and homegrown veggies but I also really want to see the world too and I don’t think they have to be mutually exclusive, I think they both can exist in the same lifetime!

What are your thoughts??

Above all else, I have to thank the brave men and women of & for risking their lives to save ours. If it were not for them I would not be sitting on my couch, reflecting on these last few days.. This has been by far the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. For those who have not seen my stories. Our little town has been on fire since Monday afternoon. What started as a 100 acre grass fire turned into a 1500 acre massive and rapidly growing fire within 2 hours and within less than 30 minutes we were told to evacuate our farm! In moments like these, when you are literally paralyzed by fear, 30 minutes gives you barely enough time to pack yourself, your family and your important documents. What do I pack?? What do I leave behind?? Does any of this s**t even matter?? The reality is that, it doesn’t, and in sheer and utter panic I threw two suitcases together with the most random bunch of items. My brain was mush. I just could not comprehend what was happening… and in the grand scheme of things, 30 minutes does not give you enough time to pack up yourself and over 200 animals. And when you are presented with the reality of either saving yourself, your child and your spouse, OR risking your life and the life of your family to gather up all your animals… (not to say we didn’t try because we did) the decision in that moment became clear, and in the depths of the complete and utter chaos and with the sinking reality that we didn’t have enough time, we decided to only grab the dogs and leave all the other animals behind. This decision was not made lightly and it has been eating my soul up every second of every day that we have been away from our farm and animals. Before we left, we over filled our feeders and made sure all automatic waterers were on and let our animals out of their pens and told them we loved them and were so sorry… since that moment, I have been barely able to eat or focus on anything but every single soul I had to leave behind… the Lord was looking out for us though..

As I found out that a neighbor has stayed behind to not only watch his own home but every single home on our road. He even fed and watered some of our goats last night!! To say I am forever grateful would be an understatement. In times like these, having good people in your reach makes all the difference. From Monday to Tuesday, the fire grew to 5400 acres and by the way the crow flies (which is how fire travels) was less than a mile away from our house coming from 2 different directions. I have been on my knees, praying to our merciful God that he will spare our town and our farm. I have reached out to all my prayer angels and asked them to please keep us in their prayers. I know that at one point, we had hundreds of souls praying over us and our farm. I couldn’t see it but I could feel it. The Lord performs miracles every single day and I believe this was one of them. Thank you to everyone who held space for us in your thoughts and prayers over the last 2 days!! Additionally, a massive thank you goes out to all of my friends, who spouses work for Cal-Fire and Copperopolis Fire, for keeping me updated with behind the scenes news that has been instrumental in keeping my farm safe and anxiety down. Thank you who have reached out offering to help haul our animals and support us in any way you can, thank you from the very depths of my heart!!! Please know I’ll be there for you in the same way in a heart beat! I am so grateful to each of you who has been there for us in some capacity over the last 2 days! We just cannot say thank you enough!!!

Massive lessons learned here… but the one above all else is, if you have livestock of any kind, you better have a way to haul them to safety YOURSELF and you don’t wait for evacuation orders, you start loading as soon as you hear of a fire near by. I have always talked about creating one but after this, my eyes have been opened that this needs to happen NOW!!! so these next few weeks I’ll be working hard on preparing a solid fire plan for the future. We think we will always have more time but the reality is, we don’t.

Give me all the David Austin Roses I’ll take every last one. They are the absolute best, bar none! So beautiful, extraordinary fragrant, colors so soft and aesthetically pleasing. I’m simply obsessed. I ask my hubs for new David Austin plants for Valentine’s Day nearly every year because a bouquet of roses will only last a week or two but a rose bush could last my entire lifetime and then some! Pretty neat! And gals, if you haven’t experienced your husband picking you a bouquet of fresh flowers from a plant he bought for you from years past, I promise, you are most certainly missing out. It’s pretty magical. Butterflies in your belly type stuff. 🥹

I think this variety was from a Valentine’s Day from 3-4 years ago. Nothing much better than an expression of love from your soulmate, that keeps on capturing your heart, for years and years and years to come. 🌹 Can you tell the key to my heart is through plants? 😂

Meet little Miss Poppie, our new LGD 🌼

She quite literally fell into our lives a little over three weeks ago (more of her story another time) and although we would have never chosen to have a puppy and toddler at the same time, it has been a real treasure to watch them bond and fall in love with each other! They are two cute little peas in a pod 🥰

Tripe P here to protect the farm! Our LGDs names/breeds! 🐶Patch (Great Pyrenees x Alabai x Anatolian), 🐶Piper (Pure Anatolian), 🐶Poppie (Pure Great Pyrenees) lots of fluff and love!

Finding more eggs in the nesting boxes is nature’s way of whispering that spring is near! Which means if you are local, reach out for eggs again! We are loaded! 🎉

As for an update on our move to Nevada. We have not found the right place just yet and are waiting or the right timing as well. We do not have plans to do any farmers markets this year here in California but we may be seen at some pop-ups and offering flowers wholesale for local events/weddings!

While we originally had hopes to be moved by summer, that is likely not the reality. So in the meantime we are making lots of memories with our little one, sprucing up the website a bit, cleaning up the property, fixing up the house, beautifying the garden a bit and also just take advantage of the massive growing space we do have and there’s no telling how long it may take us to get a new raised garden built at our new farm!

There is no rush and only God knows when the perfect farm will come up on the market! Regardless, we are blessed to have all that we do here and are excited to sow seeds, both in the garden and in life as we await our move to Nevada! 🌱🌞
