Sam 🤎🤎🤎

Thinking about writing.
Thinking about giving.
Thinking about rescue.
Thinking about that gritty sometimes yucky place.
Thinking about otherworldly beauty.
Thinking about the critters and the humans that love them.
Thinking about the humans that don’t do that right.
Thinking about this wild ride.
Thinking about bonds.
Thinking about inspiration.
Thinking about horses and hunger and hay.
Thinking about fulfillment.
Thinking about miracles.
Thinking about quiet reflection.
Thinking about safety.
Thinking about gratitude.

This is Sam in 2020, abandoned in the desert when his humans were done with him. A day away from dying of starvation. He is a thriving old man now.

I have to think about these things in sharing awareness, writing to speak to ones heart and hopes for giving this Season. I have to think about Sam.

This Giving Tuesday I hope you will think about them too.

Now and then.

What we do, collectively. We rescue, rehab and rehome. You, our adopters take the reins and continue the work, building trust, teaching and loving them.

This is Valore today. She’s now 3, loved and learning. Happy gotcha day sweet girl, we’re so happy you found your forever! It’s a joy to watch you thrive and grow 🤎🤎🤎
Thank you Grace!

Valore was named Yarrow when she came into the rescue at nearly a year old, you, our supporters helped us literally save her life. She was thrown away, found herself with a trader, starved and living in filth, literally near death.

It takes us all to do this work! This story has a beautiful ending…..beginning. Bend Equine Medical Centeritude 🙏

More helpers doing great things!!!

Our friends at of Angels are organizing drop off locations for flood victims, with focus on horse owners, and we hope to have a truck headed down with supplies. Please hold before sending any aid to US, once we know that we can get the truck and with a list of exactly what is most needed (although FUNDS are needed directly to Fleet of Angels!) . We are thinking hay, hay, more hay, and First Aid kits, and fly masks, are top priority.
Stay by, !

More helpers in NC!

We are devastated to see the disastrous effects of Hurricane Helene that have impacted thousands of people and equines far and wide. Please join The Foundation for the Horse, the AAEP's charitable arm, in aiding the victims of the hurricane with a donation to help those affected.

The Foundation for the Horse works directly with equine veterinarians on the ground to make sure supplies, hay, feed and veterinary care are provided to animals in need.

Pictured is an example of the devasting effects the residents of Hendersonville, NC have suffered during Hurricane Helene.

If you would like to join us in aiding those affected, donate at: https://membership.aaep.org/FFTH/Shared_Content/Donation-Pages/Give-Now.aspx?ItemId=DISASTER_RELIEF&SourceCode=GiveNow&fbclid=IwY2xjawFnmcNleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHaHxoC1eLyh3A4yhmAjxmWHPmr_MlVVwcEAQlS7eG9dEchYSrXaPsyTwdQ_aem_XLRekJJPklcJ9rVpFvH-Tg

Dutch, Comacho and April.

Run free, treasured Ones.

* Dutch had advanced DSLD that had progressed so that we could not keep him pain free.

April had advanced navicular disease that had advanced so that her tendon was fragile and ready to tear. We could not keep her sound and pain free.

Comacho had been fighting a grievous wound and we could not keep him pain free.

All 3 were let go with our vet team’s recommendations as there was no more to be done.

It’s so hard on us and our volunteers that put so much into keeping these horses comfortable, happy and loved. The good bye, see you again are always met with tears, hugs, flowers and a toast 🥂 to them. They are gone but never forgotten 💔💔💔

It’s gutting that they all broke down about the same time, guess heaven needed them? ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Please be gentle with us until we find our equilibrium again…..❤️❤️❤️

Jewell part 2

Jewell went into training once she was completely healed and healthy.
She became a trail horse, did dressage and was excelling in the world of equitation.

Enter Amber who had followed Jewell’s story from the beginning. A dressage rider herself wanted Jewell. We trail rode together, she did a little dressage but quickly realized being a study of the horse and an excellent guardian that none of it made Jewell happy. Oh Jewell did exactly what was asked of her, it was that something was missing.

We had an animal communicator talk to her, remember in part 1 she was in the kill pen with milk but no baby? Well she had a lot to say about that.

Amber decided to stop riding her and let her just be a horse, in a small herd grazing under the Three Sisters mountain range. She was in heaven but something was still missing.

Enter an orphan named Jasper, Amber had the idea to graft him! Maybe this was the missing piece to Jewell’s happiness?

Turns out It was. She made a great mom, raised Jasper and weaned him naturally in their own time (pictured). He went on to grow up and was adopted. Jewell was happy.

When Birch entered the rescue, Amber mused about grafting him to Jewell? It had been a few years and maybe being a mom is what she wants to do?

Our horses, especially Ambers all have a choice and a voice. So we introduced Birch to her and she took to him immediately and he her!!!

If you’re new to this story see previous posts about his journey and the grafting process.

I’m happy to report they are two peas in a pod, happy as can be. Jewell is a doting mother and Birch is content nursing, making friends and learning.
We could not be more thrilled.

Two horses that suffered great loss, finding love and happiness!

A kill pen rescue, a save by and the Wags and Menace Foundation and a young rescue (us) that created a path for a beautiful things to come.

We could not be more proud of Jewell’s story and happy ending!

Amber at went on to join our board and gentles wild ones and cares for a herd of 30.

Jewell part 1

We’ve talked a lot about Birch, the little Cremello foal seen falling out of a trailer at the BLM Corals after the devastating round up at South Steens. Motherless he stood alone in a sea of mother baby reunions looking for his mother, she was nowhere to be found. The two videos are heartbreaking to watch.

3 Sisters has been saving orphans for 10 years now and have created a robust orphan program along side Cindy Lee and the Wags and Menace Make a Difference Program Foundation

We met Cindy Lee 12 years ago when we pulled a young Cremello mare out of a notorious NW kill pen.

I’ll never forget seeing the photo and description of a 7 year old mare, standing knee deep in filth, covered in wounds from being attacked at the feed lot. She was lactating, with no baby in sight. She looked defeated and well, just sad. There was something about her, I could not get her off my mind. So I went about fundraising for her and found a sponsor to get her out! 24 hours later we were on our way to get her out of the slaughter pipeline.

She was run through a chute and a halter was forcibly thrown on her, I was given the end of a lead rope. She was wild and scared and drug me down the aisle to our trailer and dove in. As if she knew this was her ticket out of the hell hole she found herself in.

She was put in quarantine and we went about trying to get the halter off and the filth off of her. It was a hard no. We had a few volunteers sit with her and slowly she lost her flight and fight but little did we know……..30 days passed and quarantine was about over (this kill pen was notorious for disease so we did 45-60 day QT for all horses brought in from there) when I walked into the barn one morning Jewell was trying to breathe, she let me touch her for the first time and I knew something was horribly wrong!

Bend Equine Medical Center was called and Dr Findley and team came, with quiet care they went about looking for the cause.
